Funny you should ask, we watched The Intern recently and there was a brief scene that addressed this issue of packaging Anne Hathaway is a CEO and at some point orders some items from her own company so that she can evaluate the packaging upon delivery. Long story short she is not really satisfied and makes time to visit the shipping dept herself to coach and demonstrate proper packaging, I thought that was cool. My point and I do have one is whether it's a fancy silk garment or a dildo in a plain brown wrapper, a little attention to packaging goes a long way. Good luck with your business!

While I do like pretty paper - at the same time the waste of it annoys me. I prefer companies use the least amount of packaging possible. I'd prefer: - non-breakable items to be wrapped in unscented tissue and then in a plain bag (don't staple it like above, get ones with carry handles that way I can reuse it for something else). No company logo of any sort. Or just tissue paper then a plain mailer box. - breakable, even though I hate bubble wrap, I don't want broken items either, so use that or packing peanuts and then same as above. I don't see the point of tissue then bubble wrap then box...that's overkill and too much waste. Also don't cover everything in tape a hundred times...that annoys me to undo and then it wrecks the box or the bubble wrap so I can't reuse it. Also have various bags/boxes to match the size of the item, don't do an Amazon and package something that is 2 inches in a 20 inch box or bag.
Personal touches I like a small card...your name and company name etc that I can keep for future reference and maybe a small wrapped chocolate or a small bag of candy (5 or 6 pieces...nothing more) or a nice herbal tea bag. I don't mind a very small item like that and will always eat/use it and think it's a nice touch. I buy from one seller on eBay and she always adds a single Ghirardelli chocolate square stapled to her card.

It is moderately important to me.
If there is a product I want and cannot find it anywhere else, or find it for close to the same price, I don't care too much.
But I buy a lot of frivolous stuff. And when I can get two similar items for similar prices I will choose the place that makes unboxing a bit more fun.
With your MLM I would definitely choose pretty packaging over not. There are too many people selling the exact same thing for the same price for me not to go with the one that makes me feel a bit special when unwrapping.

Honestly packaging doesn’t matter to me in regards to if I’ll purchase something again..I will take notice if it’s cute though. This one site I order from often always writes a little note on my invoice and I always appreciate the extra touch (I posted a positive review on their IG page because of it)..but those packaging isn’t anything beautiful..just a box with newspaper for padding ..but it’s the extra note that I like.
I would rethink the scented tissue paper..I don’t mind it but when I use to do swaps I had a lot of people who request nothing scented at all because of allergies, headaches, etc.

Pretty packaging doesn't influence my buying decision at all. Soemtimes I will order something and it is in a nice box or in tissue and I think it is nice but I'm just as happy if it is plain paper etc. If tissue paper is included, definitely not scented. I don't like overkill in packaging it is just a waste and ends up in landfill. Bags like the ones you have in your picture look like kids party bags to me.
Bags that I don't mind are either white or kraft that are plain and maybe have a company sticker on them and not stapled so I can re-use them.

Thank you! This is excellent and exactly what I'm looking for.
I'm looking into the price difference for envelopes more earth friendly than plastic.
How would you feel about reusable bags?
I have in person orders, orders that people pick up at my house, and ones that have to be mailed. These were for porch pickups that go into the lockers on my porch.
The current paper is pretty and big enough to reuse, I'll switch to the unscented just in case.
I don't believe it will make a difference with initial orders but I want to always stand out as the one that goes one step further and makes it feel a little special. I really look for ways to stand out so they think of me when they have a need or a referral.

I do like nice packaging! I will say I ordered something from you (not you directly as I’m in Canada) and when it arrived “thank you Ashley Lastname” was written in huge black marker in the inside of the box flaps and I didn’t appreciate it at all. It felt impersonal and strangely tacky — and also drew a lot of noticeable attention to the box once it was flattened and in the recycling. So I’d rather have just received a plain box, not one with my entire name scrawled across it in sharpie. That is great to know. The Canadian orders ship directly from the warehouse and that is their thing. I'll send a note in! Thank you!

The packaging doesnt matter, but if I received an order wrapped in scented tissue, I would not be likely to order again.

I might think that I was paying for the packaging I was throwing away. I do like a short thank you on the invoice though.

There are lots of great suggestions here, as always. I think the only thing everyone agrees on is, no scented tissue paper. As good as your intentions are. Less is better than more, in pretty much every situation now. Whatever you decide on is going to be perfect - your examples are very pretty, Stephanie.

For me, packaging would not influence future orders. I would appreciate it when I received it, but I don’t think I would even think about it on the next order.

Pretty packages are all well and good but not necessary.
My biggest problem is sellers who go for the pretty and unnecessary packaging and pass that cost on to the customer. I don't want to pay for "pretty" stuff that just gets thrown away.
I know for my bakery I use white or Kraft boxes only (easier to customize for different themes with ribbon) I use white tissue paper (or whatever I can get cheaper)

Do you push those bags into a box to mail? I think that would be unnecessary as that cute bag is useless pushed into a box. Paper tissue and bubble wrap would be ok and a sticker cute, personalized. For a personal delivery, I think it's pretty.

Mailed packages get tissue paper and ribbon in a pink envelope (for now, trying to go more earth friendly with envelopes or at least using nicer boxes that can be reused for gifting.

I'm very chemically sensitive and anything scented transfers to everything in a package. I wouldn't be happy if I got scented tissue. The scent would transfer to my hands and then whatever I ordered would have to be de-scented. Yes, I'm that sensitive.
A reusable bag? When I get them, I do like and reuse them.

I like nice packaging. I bought a little necklace from an Etsy seller last year for a gift. It wasn't expensive but it came in a nice gift box with tissue paper and a small handwritten thank you note. I was very impressed. I remember this business now and have referred a few people. The normal Etsy/ eBay orders I do are quite faceless and forgettable. So yes, while I don't think you need to go crazy I do think having good packaging bis important to success. I agree with this - I have just ordered and received a small craft kit that came in a nice bag but more importantly a hand written 'thank you card - hope you enjoy your kit' which I will remember and because the seller was timely sending the parcel I will buy from her again if the occasion arises. ETA: I think your bags are nice and would be happy with that presentation.

Remember that if you want to be able to use your packaging over a number of years and have folk recognise it as specific to you : patterns and designs are 1. More expensive than plain to buy in. 2. Get retired in favor of new designs and 3. Often are not available in quantities you might require or the minimum number to order might be higher than you want.
If you are wanting to build brand awareness from the packaging then imho a plain block colour is more sustainable long term and you can then personalise it with ribbon, a card, a monogram etc. etc.

I like pretty packaging and presentation. If I am considering placing a future order, the pretty packaging may be incentive to order through you, although lack of pretty packaging would not dissuade me, either, of that makes sense?
If I were you, I would keep the pretty packaging- it’s sort of your own personal branding and branding matters.
I sent you another PM.

Solid advice.

Ok so I've been wondering how in the world the tissue paper being a problem wasn't on my radar because I'm usually pretty aware if things like that. I think its because the tissue paper matches the fragrance that they've ordered so maybe my brain just assumed that they like it if they are ordering it.
Still I'll stick with pretty from here out just in case.

The scented tissue paper would throw me into a sneezing fit for hours. With that said, I don’t mind any packaging as long as it doesn’t increase the cost of the product or shipping.

This is my pet peeve. The packaging literally gets thrown away. With my scrapbook stuff it really grates on my nerves when they pack in that shredded paper shit. I won’t buy from that store again. Put it in pretty paper or paper bag that I can cut up and use on a card or in your case a cute a cute paper to use for regifting. So anything reusable but that protects the product is ok to me. Froofy just for froofies sake (I made that word up) is annoying.

Such an interesting question!
In general, I'm a practical shopper and don't care how the thing arrives, as long as it's not broken. If Staples started wrapping my new printer cartridges in tissue paper, it wouldn't affect my buying habits at all.
That said, what you're selling are "little luxury" items. For those, I have to admit that nice packaging makes me feel good. Part of what I'm buying is a fantasy, right? When I buy Bath & Body Works stuff, the blue-and-white gingham print on the inside of the box makes it a little more fun. An Anna Griffin card kit could easily go in a padded envelope instead of a sturdy logo box, but the "Ahhh!" factor of lifting the lid and seeing all the pretties inside adds a little extra to the experience. If I'm making a discretionary purchase like that, it's to treat myself, and the whole experience is important.
I do like the packaging to be recyclable, though. Styrofoam and non-recyclable plastic are not my favorite.
And I'll validate your scented tissue paper - I would enjoy it! Since you match the scent to what the person ordered, it seems safe to assume the'd like it... Although I suppose a sensitive person could be making the purchase as a gift, so maybe omitting the scent is a good idea after all.

While I love getting pretty packages, it wouldn’t affect my purchasing decision. That. If the product is satisfactory, the packaging does not matter in the end. Unless it is insufficient for it to arrive safely and undamaged to my home. I would not pick you over another because your packaging was prettier. Or think you put more thought into it. Or cared more. In the end I know I am paying for that packing so I'd rather not be paying for pretty.
