A grand jury has returned a 16-count indictment against "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett, in connection with his reporting of an alleged attack he claimed to suffer in late January, according to multiple reports. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office confirmed the indictment to ABC 7 in Chicago. The new charges from the indictment each carry a possible sentence of probation to four years in prison, ABC 7 Chicago reported. LINK
From another article: Now the grand jury has returned 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report. The grand jury returned two separate sets of charges. The first set are related to what Smollett told officers about the alleged attack, including that the attackers called him racial and homophobic slurs, struck him with their hands, put a noose around his neck, and poured some sort of chemical substance on him. The second set of charges are related to the second interview Smollett had with police about the alleged attack later that day. The new set of charges each carry a possible sentence of probation to four years. Smollett already pleaded not guilty to the first disorderly conduct charge. He was taken into custody and posted $100,000 bond to be freed. LINK 2

Not saying he doesn't deserve it, but it's ironic that Paul Manafort got less time than Smollet probably will!

I hope this dissuades other idiots from lying, wasting scare LE time and making it even HARDER for real racial and gay-hate crimes to be taken seriously.

I will be really disappointed if he ends up not having to pay back Chicago for all the hours wasted.

I'd rather he pay back the city of Chicago, even if it takes the rest of his life, then support his butt in prison for a few years. I also think he should do years of community service related to helping to serve in some way the victims of negative racial or homophobic interactions.....the people who have actually experienced the trauma he claimed he was a victim of. He also clearly needs mental health care.

I wonder why he did it in the first place? Was it to get sympathy in hopes of getting acting roles, in hopes of just getting his name known? Well...that all backfired - his career is over (at least it should be).

Earlier this week I was wondering what was happening with this case. I checked a couple of his siblings Instagram accounts and they have been silent since mid Feb. I thought that was interesting and now this today.

But just because he chose to lie about this does not mean he has mental health issues. Sometimes people are just assholes. Not every asshole needs mental health care.

I think he deserves to be charged. If he pleas out, he pleas out. But it should be put on record that what he did will not be tolerated. The police time he wasted. The resources he wasted. The public trust he violated. Even if he never dayserves a day bin jail, he deserves to go through the process.

Good. There should be no wiggle room for anyone for violating HIIPA rules.

Greed drives people to do terrible things.
What's really upsetting to me in all of this is that Smollett has directed attention away from the folks who waste police resources by calling the cops for folks having a picnic in the park or kids selling lemonade. Where are their indictments for false reporting? Smollett surely deserves to be in legal trouble, but so do they.

I think he should see jail time. Millions of Americans can not put a political sign in their yard, a bumper sticker on their car, wear a tee shirt in support of the president, a red hat on their head, without fear of property damage, harassment and assault. He perpetuated that fear, he should see jail time.

I’m sure his lawyers will ask for leniency.
I’m sure he will apologize.
I’m sure that the judge will give him a very light and reduced sentence, especially since he’s led “an otherwise blameless life” up to this point.
Oh wait.........
