If you use a lot of patterned paper in cardmaking you might be interested in this. I came across this video from an Aussie Stampin' Up demo with what she calls "love it chop it" which is the same approach I've been using for most of my 12x12" patterned paper. It makes it a lot easier to store papers, and more importantly to actually use them up.
Basically, you chop all the paper into the largest size you would use on a card. In my case it's 4 x 5.25" and conveniently you can get 6 panels from each 12" sheet that way, plus a narrow strip. I do this with some of my 6x6" papers too, because my storage cases are too small for 6" paper.
Cutting it up is a really great way to push through the precioussssss-ness of the paper! Once it's cut it's already "ruined" in my mind, so I'm not afraid to play with it and take risks and make cards that are no good. Or I decide I really like the paper full sized and just make a set of notecards showcasing the gorgeous print.
She also shows how you can further cut down some of the paper to get a jumpstart on cardmaking.

Your post actually sent me in a different but somewhat related direction - to pull out every sheet in my 6x6 paper pads, sort by color and donate the ones I’d never use.. I almost never think of using them, and if I do, it’s a hassle finding what I want. (Or such a distraction and fun going through them, I don’t move forward in the project.) Then they can go back in the frig bin where they are now, with ROYGBIVBWN dividers.
I keep most 12x12 intact because sometimes it’s used for boxes or some rare other paper crafting item, though mostly I make cards. It’s all in one wheeled cart in hanging folders. But I think I’ll go through and cut some I became obsessed with so bought packs of 20 of the same pattern and never used.
I haven’t even watched the video yet, so thank you for the creative organizational nudge!
ETA: Watched! She’s great.I don’t use much patterned paper for cards, do more background techniques and/or stamping/die cutting, but a great reminder to include it in the arsenal. I like how she stores her 8.5x11 - will have find her to see what those are.
BTW, Jennifer McGuire just put out a video using scraps on cards.

If you are exclusively making cards, it's a great idea.
As someone who does 12x12 pages as well as card making, I am more likely to cut up the scraps leftover from my scrapping instead of cutting up papers that I may want to use for a future 12x12 layout.
Prior to moving, I had a ton of leftover scraps that either needed to be thrown out or cut into more usable sizes and shapes, so one day I sat down and cut up my scraps into uniform shapes. The scraps fit beautifully in a small box.
It can be really handy to have pre-cut pieces. If you scrapbook and don't want to cut into a full page, it's also a good way to use up leftover scraps from making layouts.

I love Kylie. I follow her blog and YouTube and I think she is the one whose husband also makes cards! I took a class at Scrapbook Expo and the instructor had us using some "ugly" patterned paper, but when we put it together with the stamped card front and embellishments it looked great. I try to keep that in mind.

I try to keep that in mind. I gave away some ugly paper that I knew I'd never use. The colors weren't bad, but the patterns were hideous. I seriously wondered about the "taste" of the two friends who took it off my hands. Later they showed the incredibly cute cards they had made. They had used layers, and the ugly papers ended up just a splash of color underneath the layers. It was a good lesson to me.

I keep most of my 12x12 for making box wraps, so there's no way I'm cutting it down in size, sadly! It's a pain to store bigger paper but c'est la vie. I do keep my scraps, mostly in folder pockets or page protectors with a backing card and sorted by type/colour. It's rare that I reach for a pristine sheet unless I'm out of that colour.
