Hi Everyone, Does anyone have a suggestion of a nice place to stay in Newport, RI for two nights? Something in a great location and unique would be ideal, unfortunately though we need something with at least two queen beds or one king and a pullout as it will be myself and two teens boys... So far I am deciding between: - Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina: pros are that it has a walk out patio with water views - Hotel Viking: this one looks more historic, would like something 'different' so my kids can appreciate New England but it isn't right on the water but I do think it has nice views. I think rooms are a bit smaller. - Open to other suggestions....thank you! (We are also heading to Boston and Burlington, VT if anyone has any general suggestions or advice about any of these locations, that is welcome too!)

The Newport Harbour Hotel You mentioned is an Excellent location. Right across the street from great shops and restaurants. It is really beautiful there! The hotel Is clean and updated for the most part but the bathroom was not as nice as the room itself. Hotel has a nice restaurant there if you don’t want to go out. Cliff walk is a great way to spend a couple hours and get great Pics. It’s free. Just a short drive from hotel. Mansions are by the cliffwalk. Have a great trip!

Hotel Viking is historic and very nice - it's going to have smaller rooms/no water views but it's more of a Newport hotel vs a chain hotel IN Newport if that makes sense. I would pick it for that reason alone. It's close to Redwood Library (oldest continuously operating library in US) and Touro Synagogue (oldest in US) and not far from downtown.

I live in the area. With teen boys I might go with the Marriott. Rooms might be more comfortable for them, unless you are getting a suite and the Marriott is in an active area and honestly water views are the way to go in my opinion! Viking is beautiful, my daughters' proms are there, and definitely more Newport.. don't think you could go wrong either way. Lots of b&b's around. When we lost power once we stayed in one, most are really old and this one you could hear everyone, it was creaky and not very comfortable. That's just me though. Every room in town seems to book up easily.
What time of year are you looking for? I would go with whom ever offers PARKING if it is busy season

Thanks everyone, I showed the different hotels to my kid and he wants to go with something unique to the area -- so we are going to go with the Viking, assuming they still have rooms. We will be there the first week of April (in 3 weeks!) scrapmaven -- yes college visits! this time for my junior! (I also have a senior but I'm finally focusing on my junior) - my junior very much wants "to get out of California" - he thinks he wants to east coast but has never been there! (except for a week in Cooperstown a few years ago...) so we are doing a new England tour: BU, Northeastern, UMass (maybe), UConn (maybe), URI, UVM....

I don't have any advice about Newport (it is beautiful!), but just wanted to say have fun in New England. UConn is a great choice. New Hampshire has some good choices for school too. UNH, SNHU, Keene State, Plymouth State & Dartmouth. No sales tax in NH makes it a great place to live for poor college kids!

my3freaks - yes UNH was on our list but I cut it out for now due to time - basically I decided to go to Rhode Island instead if he likes New England we will do another trip out - I’m so loving this college search as I finally get to travel more!

No advice for a hotel but is he considering UMass Amherst? That’s my alma mater. It’s changed a lot in the 35 years since I graduated.

We went to Newport yesterday. We had to pick up some artwork we had ordered and framed last month. It was snowing/sleeting/POURING rain as we drove the two hours to the art store. The weather was so bad that we just picked up the art, grabbed lunch, and headed home. LOL, we didn't even stay for an hour. Today is gorgeously sunny and nice - I wish that's what we had yesterday.
The Viking is a great central location for visiting. It's an easy walk to most places. Enjoy your visit!!!

I know it’s a crap shoot early April but that’s when our spring break is. I really hope I don’t have to drive up to Vermont in the snow!!!

~summer~ - there are a lot of great schools in Worcester MA - I went to Clark but took classes at WPI, Holy Cross, Worcester State, and Assumption (when I was there, there was a shuttle that ran between the 11 schools in the consortium and we could take classes at any).
