So every year we go to a gala at a local museum. We have so much fun at this thing. It's a big snooty pooty event lol. Suits, gowns, sometimes tuxes.
So sometimes there are themes and you can dress for the theme if you like.
I had planned on wearing a gown (skirt) that my husband bought me for christmas. I'd been coveting it for over a year. It's a vintage, hot pink, Oscar de la Renta, silk, floor length skirt. Ugh I love it so much. haha. I don't have lots of events I can wear something like this to. There's another event in September that I MIGHT be able to wear it to, I don't know. (I could wear it to both). I dont' know if I'm going to go or not though yet.
So the theme - Celtic! Argh... hot pink doesn't scream celtic. hah. My husband has a black kilt he's going to wear, I'm going to buy him green socks and shirt to go with it. I was thinking of buying some pink/green tartan plaid (finding it is kind hard fyi) and making a sash like royalty (lol) or maybe a bow around the waist and then making a matching set to go on my husband's socks. Maybe a hideous hat for him to match. haha.
He has grown out his beard ridiculously long and we're going to dye it red and he'll just shave his chin making huge mutton chops. BLAH... haha.
So, should I go with the pink skirt? Or use it as an excuse to buy a green dress? My husband upstages me every year with his simple outfit so I'm not sure there's a point! hah.

We need a picture of the skirt! It sounds amazing. If you find the plaid then you could fashion a scarf or sash for yourself to tie it all together.

My plan is to potentially make a sash for it.

OMG, I love the skirt!!! And it will be gorgeous with your DH in a black kilt. Drop any thoughts of green. Celtic does not equal Irish. What you need is a little Scottish Harris Tweed to finish off your outfit.

With the Celtic theme, I think the kilt sounds awesome. And I can see coordinating your outfit with his. I don’t get dying the beard and shaving it that way, or the green touches. Those things seem more like cartoon stereotypes. Is this a costume event or a classy themed event?
edited to add the mention of the green because I agree with another poster.

A shawl or wrap made from one of the tweeds would be awesome.

I agree with the others - I don't green is the way to go.How about a hot pink shirt to go with his kilt?

Or just add a touch of tartan with a hat. or this oneETA ask the vendor if they could make a matching bow tie for your DH.

My husband's kilt is black, so if we went pink, what would you suggest for him then? I like to "match" when we go out.. I'm weird. You'll see everything from tuxes to people wearing "costumes" at this event.

For your husband I would get a white shirt and then use the same plaid you get (in pink) as a sash for his across the shoulder.

Change the accessories of the kilt to fuchsia rather than green. But then, pink and green coordinate -- so adding the neutral of black shouldn't be an issue. But, I'd be looking HARD for pink plaid socks for his kilt! (A simple word search on amazon pulled up pink and black argyle mens socks!) That skirt is amazing -- there is no way you shouldn't wear it!

You'll see everything from tuxes to people wearing "costumes" at this event. I'd have him wear a black shirt with a hot pink/tartan tie or bowtie and, even if he usually goes commando under the kilt, hot pink boxers/briefs. I like Loydene's suggestion of argyle socks. They will probably be easier to find than tartan.

I’m not scared of color, so I think the right emerald green would be beautiful with that pink!

Wear your skirt!! Go pink and black, sash for you and DH with bow tie. Yes yes, find him hot pink shorts! Both wear appropriate white or black shirts.

Love the skirt! So the poor husband is just going to have to sport whatever combo you can manage that goes with your fabulous skirt. He's got to take one for the team here.

I asked him if hot pink was ok and he was like "yeah I don't care" haha
So now I'm thinking black kilt, black vest, pink shirt with a tartan plaid tie and pink argyle socks.

When I think of celtic, I don't think of green or even plaid, I think of the beautiful celtic designs that are embroidered on Irish dance costumes. Would you consider a shawl or cape with a beautiful celtic knot design either embroidered or painted on it?
