I have an irrational hatred of misplaced quote marks. Quote marks are not used for emphasis. They are to quote someone or something. They can be used to show sarcasm. That's it. I can let a lot of irregular grammar and speech things go, but this one throws me over the edge. My school district is horrible about this. The elementary school newsletter goes out with misplaced quote marks every week. I thought when the secretary who started it retired it would go away. Nope. Her replacement does it too. It's something I see quite often around the district and town. The teacher I subbed for on Wednesday had his instructions for the class on the board when I showed up that morning, complete with two sets of misplaced quote marks. I erased them before the kids came in the room. Then I very passive-aggressively left the whole thing up on the board at the end of the day so he could see I fixed his mistake. What are you irrational about?

My annoyance is repetitive clicking or tapping. For example, if someone is tapping a pen on a table, I can only take about 5-10 clicks before I start twitching.

I'm a bit irrational about my house being super clean when people come over. It doesn't matter WHO said people are. My in-laws stopped by unexpectedly last Sunday. I worked every day last week except one and that was because I had a doctors appt and blood work. We had 2 soccer practices as well. Then Saturday it was grocery shopping and errands and then a soccer game. By Sunday, my house was a freaking wreck. Dog hair everywhere, dishes stacked in the sink because I'd run the dishwasher the night before and hadn't had time to empty it yet. The bathroom wasn't tidied up. Just all around, it was NOT up to my standards. I was SO irritated. When I have people over, I need at the VERY least dust, vacuum, wipe down all the counters and kitchen table, put a table cloth on the table (because it's old and the poly is kind of sticky), and dishes need to be out of the sink and either in the dishwasher or put away.

It's like doing 'this' when you want *emphasis* on *certain* words you want to make more 'obvious'.

Yes, quotation mark misuse is incredibly annoying. There was a little diner in my old town that had a sign in the front window about their lunch special: Soup with fries "or" salad. Made me wonder if you really COULD have both fries and salad.

I'm horrible with the single quotation marks... I have no idea how to properly use them, but that doesn't stop me... I use them a lot when I'm writing out steps or instructions... I'll write out the first step, then in the next paragraph refer to step one as that 'cut and paste thing' you just did, or some other random description I came up with for step one... I would call it step one, but I can never remember if step one should be capitalized... The single quotation mark is basically an indication that I don't know how to write that part of the sentence property... Sort of a full in the blank but with a hint of what's supposed to be there...
Feel free to put me on ignore now...lol

Since we are all about grammar, I just heard the funniest joke. I am watching Haven and one of them just said "Strunk and White can Funk my Wagnall."
It made me laugh- both at the incredible timing (while reading this thread) and how a grammar person would giggle like a fool.

The floating exclamation mark is my newest pet peeve. I see it a lot on Facebook, although it makes its appearance here, in texts, and other places as well.
Looks like this !
For some reason, people leave space between the last word and the exclamation mark. I though maybe it was a phone-typing thing but if you space two spaces, there should have been a period automatically inserted. So, why? Why does this happen?

My MIL likes to put quotes around our names on the envelopes of greetings cards. Maybe we all have aliases we don't know about.
Multiple exclamation points bug the crap out of me.

LOL For emphasis use either bold or italics. If you are handwriting it's acceptable to underline. Quotes aren't necessary. I do find that most of the time people don't really need to emphasize whatever it is they are putting quotes around. They hear it a certain way in their head and just assume it has to be read like that for someone to understand. Mostly people are just fine left to read the sentence plain. we really do understand that the teacher wants us to be quiet and that the or in a sentence doesn't mean and. Single quotes are to be used when quoting inside another quote. It's actually rarely necessary. (And it's times like this that I prove I really did get an A in English 420, Grammar for the grammar nerd.) I'm really glad I don't have the freak out over a clean house thing, because I'd be in all sorts of freak out today. I'm having friends over tomorrow and I won't do any extra cleaning for it.

I am going to type out the first sentence of a school notice I received a few weeks ago. It would have gone into the trash, as it causes me grammar and quotation anxiety, but it contains information I need to know. Brace yourselves... You'll love it, perumbula. I've made myself feel better by assuming that a student helper drafted the notice.
"Runner's" and "Parents", if we have bad air and it is smokey out and you do not want your runner running please do not send them to xc practice.

I agree with you about the misplaced quotation marks. My old boss used to do it all the time and it drove me nuts. We have a lot of written procedures and she used to do it in them as well. I'd go along and take them all out! This is an example:
OMG it is so annoying!!!!!
Nearly as annoying. As my co-worker who puts periods / full stops. In the middle. Of a sentence.

That's a possibility. Back at 2 Peas I used do put in all sorts of random spaces so I wouldn't get that silly sunglasses wearing emoticon!

There wasn't even the emphasis angle.

So on ignore I happily go

While we're talking about quotation marks can I just say that they belong AFTER your punctuation at the end of a sentence.
For example: "I have an irrational hatred of misplaced quotation marks." Even if you're just using quotation marks on one word the end one still goes after your "punctuation!"

One of the former peas (don't know if she made the switch) is a textile historian in New Zealand. Her blog is The Dreamstress. You might see if she has time to look at your pictures and help you with it. I do know she's very busy, though. You might have to be patient. I don't know how much she could tell you about value, but she could at least be able to tell you what you have. Then you would know what you are searching for when you look for value.
I just noticed you made the above comment on another thread. I think we can all agree that everyone makes mistakes.

My irrational hatred isn't about punctuation. I have an irrational hatred of most men with shaved heads. I believe it started with my sisters one ex-boyfriend who shaved his head. I didn't like him to start with and then I saw him hit my sister. I saw it with my own eyes and she said he didn't hit her. We grew up in a house where our father beat the crap out of us on a whim and for her to look me in the face and say he didn't hit her when she knows I saw it made me almost as angry with her as I was with him. Apparently I hold this moment against most men with shaved heads.
