I guess it’s not really a spin-off, but maryland’s thread reminded me that I had this question. I bought two packages of stew beef at Trader Joe’s last week. Got home, discovered one was actually stew beef, the other was something called “shaved steak.” It kinda looked like the stew beef, but not exactly. The price was just a little more per pound than the stew beef. So I’ve been cooking for over 40 years, and I’ve never even heard of shaved steak. What the heck? Can anyone tell me what to do with it? Can I toss it into the pot alongside the stew beef and cook as usual, or do I have to do something different with it, and if so, WHAT? At the moment, both packages are in the freezer because I didn’t know what else to do with them. Thank you from an apparently incompetent shopper AND cook.

That shaved steak would get sauted with peppers and onions, served on a hoagie roll, and possibly topped with some provolone.

Another good idea for shaved steak that Jeremy likes is to saute it and season with taco seasoning. Peppers and onions too, if you'd like. Then put in flour tortillas with cheese and make quesadillas. He loves steak quesadilla.

If it's what I think it is, It's sliced thinly against the grain and is usually skirt steak. It's good for stir fry, a Philly steak type sandwich, a beef stroganoff, tacos, etc. It's very tender and cooks quickly. At least that's what I do with the shaved steak from Wegman's.

We'd be making beef dips with it.

Sounds delicious, when should we be over? I’m happy to bring a side. Guacamole if you’re making the quesadillas, but what is a typical side for a Philly Cheese Steak? Aren’t those a meal unto themselves?

For other attendees no worries, I do not put green soapy spices in my guacamole. They tried to kick me out of the state for that but I held firm.

But *sighs* I will have some on the side for the host so she can try the superior appetiser/accompaniment.

You guys had a whole fun conversation without me. No on guac (but thanks anyway), yes on cilantro (it’s like catnip to me). The dinner thread peas know me well. Thanks, everyone!

I read this thread before I went to Kroger and I saw that they had packages of shaved steak. I've never noticed it before. I have peppers & onions that need to be used up so I bought the steak & rolls. But what do I saute in? doesn't it need some kind of sauce? Seasoning? I doubt I'll put cheese on it but I'd like it to be a little saucy in the roll. (I've never eaten a Philly CheeseSteak so I don't know what they are supposed to taste like).

I’m interested, too, since this is probably how we’ll eat it.

I like mine with some Worcestershire sauce and a sprinkle of Tabasco. And lots of mushrooms. I saute that all together in a little butter.
