*One pic in this post and more down below. * The pics are too big to add add as attachment and I do not know how to make them smaller. I did put some in a zip file, but the board still wont allow me to post them. What do I do?? Thanks Is there a way to do a preliminary check on an item, or take a picture of it and send it to say, Antique Road Show? Thanks much. Attachments:

It would depend on what it is. A great resource is museums. There are museums for buttons, farm implements, firearms, textiles... Reference books at the library or bookstore, antique shops, Ebay, us Refupeas are a good source of information. I don't thing Antiques Road Show has the time to help people outside of the show.
If you post a picture, I'm willing to try to help you figure it out. When describing something (to anyone) be prepared to note markings and their locations, measurements and any blemishes. Good luck.

Thank you. I have to go to my moms and that will be a few days, then I will take a picture and post it. I do know it is some sort of a fabric with and Asian theme. It belonged to my dad's aunt. It is at least over 100 years old. I wont see her till Tuesday, so I will get back to this then.

tishy, Adding: don't forget that even if something is antique it doesn't mean it has a high monetary value. Rarity and condition play a huge part in it. Prices also go up and down in the antique market. Some antique dealers have accurate information and some just make stuff up. Sometimes if something has been refinished the value plummets, other times it doesn't change the value. It must be determined if something is an original or a reproduction. And, not all reproductions are cheap copies.

One of the former peas (Don't know if she made the switch) is a textile historian in New Zealand. her blog is the Dreamstress You might see if she has time to look at your pictures and help you with it. I do know she's very busy, though. You might have to be patient. I don't know how much she could tell you about value, but she could at least be able to tell you what you have. Then you would know what you are searching for when you look for value.

Thank you both. My mom is going through things in the house to at some point she can sell it. I know she has no expectations for the worth, so that is good. But one never knows . Thank you also for the blog link. I will also check it out. Wasnt she the pea who made THE.MOST.AMAZING reproductions of clothes from different time periods?

An Asian influenced piece needs an Asian art dealer. Asian art is out of the world right and the Chinese are buying all they can at over inflated prices. But remember Asians have been making tourist art for as long as there have been tourists to Asia. So you may have an old piece but it might not be desirable.

A museum that is a member of the International Council of Museums will not do appraisals. It is against the code of ethics to do appraisals for the public.
Canadian Museums are also advised against making recommendations to specific outside appraisers but I don't know if American Museums have the same advice give to them.
Good luck - I hope you find someone who is able to give you an appraisal! (I'd love to see a photo too when you have a chance!)

What part of Asia are you talking about? My sister has been an import dealer of Asian textiles (mostly from Thailand) for several years now. She runs her own very successful business and may have some knowledge. She spends 4 months in Thailand every year going around meeting personally the artisans and craftspeople, buying things like pillow cases made from antique saris, wall hangings, clothing, and jewelry. Everything she buys is handmade. She also travels to Cambodia and has been once to India. Let me know if I can help.

Thank you for all the offers and info. I will post a picture on Tuesday when I go to my moms. I have no idea of the origins . Maybe there will be markings that will help with that.

I have a twelve piece set of beautiful glass dining ware. I worked with a company via email to help me determine what it was and it's value. Perhaps that is a possibility?

Try uploading your picture to tinypic.com. I've uploaded pictures there before. No membership is required. It'll give you the URL to post on boards like this.
