I'm in the middle of a two week trip to Boston. It's business during the week, but I stayed through the weekend to be a tourist. Sparing all of the details, last night I found myself without a working debit or credit card, with only $30 in cash on hand. My bank is wiring me cash from my account to last me until I get home next Friday and they can replace my cards.
The tiny little market that they are sending the money to is maybe a half mile from my hotel. I don't have a car, but I could easily walk. However, I am starting to feel nervous about walking back to the hotel with a lot of cash on my person. I'm considering calling a cab, but feel silly because it's really not very far.
What do you all think? Walk or cab?

If it is a lot of cash, I'd call a cab

If it is a lot of cash, I'd call a cab unless there is a lot of friendly foot traffic and then I might walk, day time only with the cash stuffed in various places

Ask the concierge for a plastic bag (Ziploc type size) and a roll of clear packing tape. When you get to the market, collect your cash and go to the restroom. Secure the cash inside the bag and securely tape it to an undergarment or the inside of your clothing, near your waist.
Enjoy your walk.

I have ziplocs with me. Not sure if this market will have a public restroom, but I will ask when I call them. I was told to call before going because they may not have enough cash this early in the day. It's in a neighborhood, and I felt less than relaxed when I walked through it yesterday afternoon. There were maybe one or two other walkers per block, none of whom gave me pause. Just felt uneasy in general because I'm not familiar with my surroundings. Now that I think about it, I'd be uncomfortable in my own neighborhood with lots of cash on me.
Leaning toward calling a cab now.

Follow your instincts. I agree, a cab would probably be best.

Why are they sending it to this market? Why can't they just send it to your hotel? Are there no banks open this day?
I think this is a strange situation.

I'd just be concerned if someone at the market saw the cashier give me a wad of cash and then saw me walking off alone.
I really hate to see old ladies at the store with a huge stash of cash, it really is so unsafe.
My sheriff deputy friends would say if you ever feel like you shouldn't do something because it might not be safe, just don't do it. I really hate being in a strange city carrying cash.

I agr e with old crow. Your bank can make better arrangements than this.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you felt uncomfortable why is this even a question? Go with your instincts and keep yourself safe. Are you in a position that the price of the cab will put you in a precarious position the rest of the week?

I would follow your instincts. Better safe than sorry 'cuz you never know what kind of crazies are hanging around the store. Sad, but true.

Trust your instincts. Without the cash, I would walk all over Boston - it really is a lovely city.

A cab won't be that expensive, take a cab.

Took the cab. Back in my room safe and sound. My bank's inability to handle this better is the reason I'll be finding a new bank when I get home. Thanks all for the advice and support. I generally make good decisions, but was still flustered this morning from last night's fiasco. I actually found a better western union location that was farther away, but I felt better about the whole situation. Cash is going in the room's safe, minus enough for lunch and admission to the Museum of Fine Arts.

What do you all think? Walk or cab? In all candor, I'd call my bank and tell them they have 24 hours to get me a working debit and/or credit card. This "fix" is utterly unacceptable. Seriously. I have had a major breech on my credit card that caused it to be shut down while I was overseas. My bank managed to get me a new credit card the next morning. You're in Boston - not exactly a location where FedEx isn't going to find you. Wiring you a bunch of cash is ridiculous.

Darcy Collins You are absolutely right. My mom just had a similar problem and hers was overnighted fedex. Last night I was told by Visa that they couldn't send me a card without verification from my bank, but my bank's "emergency" phone number is only operational from 9-5 Monday through Friday. So, time for a new bank.
