First weekend in October garage sale check ins

i bought a brown (really soft!) fringed cross body bag
three scarves - two are pink and white (one is summer weight/the other is winter)
a black and gray summer weight scarf
a huge box of candles from a wedding - all tall and white - i am thinking they will be perfect for christmas decorating
half of that box are those flameless candles - and a gallon bag mixed half votives/half flameless votives

and...my favorite thing
a big disco ball

Things were slow at the thrift stores this week. Yesterday I did find 2 jars (peanut butter size) full of old buttons for $3/each. Dumped them out and have had so much fun sorting through them. There are some really interesting buttons. There are four that have 2 Scottie dogs carved on the front. Each button is 1.25" in diameter. Not sure if they are plastic or wood, but they look/feel like wood. There were also some beautiful old mother of pearl buttons and a set of flat leather buttons with a wrapped cord edging. Those probably came off an old shirt or jacket as there are 4 of one size and 2 smaller ones (cuffs perhaps?).

Last Sat. I stopped by an estate sale that had advertised needlepoint and fabric. What they had of those were way overpriced and not my taste. However I spotted a quart ziploc bag full of old buttons - for just $4. Opened those up last night as well and found several cards of vintage Schwanda mother of pearl buttons on the card still! Considering that I paid $12 for 3 cards of m.o.p. buttons this summer, I definitely got my money's worth!

Does anyone else here collect old buttons? I am just starting to pick those up and would love any pointers on how to identify or date vintage buttons!

I got informed of a yard sale across the street from one of my friends that I just HAD to go to. An older gentlemen had passed away and my friend said the family was selling his clothes to get the house, which has just sold, cleaned out. I was thinking 'nahhh...my 17 year old and my DH won't be interested in an 80something year old man's clothes', but she mentioned and enourmous amount of ties for $1 each, so I figured why not? You can't beat that price no matter where you shop so I drug DS 17 out of bed to go pick some ties.
Y'all I got there and was FLOORED. This old guy had to be the snazziest dresser EVER. According to his DIL he was a bit of a shut-in, twice retired and shopped online EVERY DAY. My friend said the UPS or FED EX truck came every single day.
When the family got in the house they found over 1,000 suits/sport coats/blazers, 2500 ties, hundreds of pairs of unworn shoes, more than 50 pairs of cowboy boots, not to mention the pants, shirts, sweaters, belts....he was apparently Nordstrom's best customer lol. There was not one item in that lot that was not a brand name - some so ritzy I had to look them up because they are too rich for my wallet.
I called DH after browsing a bit and realizing Dapper Dan wore the same size everything as DH. DH says 'why don't you just grab me some stuff you think I'll like?' I said there was no way, so much stuff I was overwhelmed. It was like being in the world's largest haberdashery. He had to come, and quick! lol

After two hours of shopping and trying on, this is what we walked away with:
1-100% camel hair blazer
3-dress coats
2 pairs of dress slacks
(DH says the coats alone were probably worth $2-300each new, and if they were ever worn, you can't tell it - they were all timeless men's pieces)
2 - pairs of Lucky Brand jeans
4- pairs of Carhartt work pants
1-pair Ralph Lauren courduroy slacks
1-pair polo golf khakis
4-dress shirts
1- leather Ralph Lauren belt
13 - ties (Hilfiger, RL, Chaps)
2- pairs of Cole Haan loafers NEVER WORN
1-pair tuxedo shoes (looks worn maybe once by the scuffs on the soles)
1-pair Hilfiger Saddle Oxford wing tips NEVer worn
1-pair Dan Post cowboy boots NEVER WORN
1-shark garment steamer with every possible purchaseable attachment

We spent $150. By my estimation after spending about an hour online when we got home, I think we got OVER $2500 worth of never or lightly used clothing, ties and shoes(and the steamer of course). We were stoked!
