Dh had to work this morning, so we didn't get out to any garage sales, but I did get over to the thrift store and found a few things. I bought black pants (which fit and feel so nicely), a black velour shrug, and two newsboy caps. I picked up three long sleeved casual and polo style shirts for dh, and hope they will fit, but it is hard to get shirts that are long enough in the body for him. If they don't fit there was a pair of lime green Rockport leather loafers that I can exchange them for. It's a good thing that I went back and bought my cream coloured winter coat when I did, because all of the vintage coats, in all sizes, were gone. I wonder whether someone cleared the place out with plans to resell. Did anyone happen to get out garage saling yesterday or today? Visit the thrift store? Find something cool on kijiji, craigslist, etc.? Please share if you did!

I'm always surprised at how many of you guys can go to garage sales with your husbands! Mine would be such a pain in the ass. He wouldn't go to thrift stores willingly either, LOL I loved going to them with a girlfriend, but she moved away last year. I don't think I've been to one since she moved I'm also NOT a morning person, so if there was anything I'd want to buy, it would be gone anyway. I enjoy reading these threads each week though!

My3freaks, my dh won't go to thrift stores with me, though he will garage sale with me. Which is fortunate for me, because I do not drive! That's too bad about your friend moving away, I am sorry to hear that. GypsyGirl what great finds you've had on buttons recently. There are some beautiful vintage buttons. The mother of pearl ones some especially interesting.. I bet it would be fun to sort through them, imagining what items they might have come from. They'd make an interesting display even just sitting out in the jar. Vintage buttons sound like something that would be fun to collect.

I found a fossil purse for 4.99 and a old square basket with a wrought iron hand for $2. Both at goodwill. I put the purse in the washer. Hoping for the best.
Heartcat, I love hearing about all your fab finds and descriptions. So detailed.
Gypsy girl I love buttons!

I don't do garage sales...long story lets just say I came away bruised... But, when I get in the mood I will thrift store shop till I drop and this week was one of those times... 10 assorted colored still in wrapper older crochet thread spools, 3 packs of playing cards, 2 cones of twine, 2 Phaltzgraf(sp?) dinner plates, 6 rolls of old rayon seam tape, almost full bolt of lace, baggie of zippers, one very expensive candle. At one store someone cleaned out a very expensive shoe closet...to bad she had tiny feet

Our goodwill is so overpriced, I hardly ever buy anything. I got lucky today, I found a Princess House crystal margarita glass for 99 cents. I also found a really nice vintage pyrex casserole dish at the Salvation Army store. It is blue with a snowflake garland. I think I may be starting a new collection!

Nothing today but I did use 2 pottery pasta dishes that I found at goodwill for dinner tonight. I am crazy of dishes and like having just the right dish for the occasion.
I am I pretty sure that other people are starting to buy the give-away dishes I like to buy/ collect since i am not seeing many of those now.

I am I pretty sure that other people are starting to buy the give-away dishes I like to buy/ collect since i am not seeing many of those now. It seems that whenever I decide to collect something 'different', everyone else decides to collect the same thing. Then the prices go up. I first saw it happen with vintage linens back in the 80's. Once that happens, I move on to something else. That probably explains all the stuff I have collected over the years! I also found a really nice vintage pyrex casserole dish at the Salvation Army store. It is blue with a snowflake garland. I think I may be starting a new collection! Great find! I recently bought a complete refrigerator set of the same blue pyrex with snowflake garland. The pattern is Snowflake Blue, also known by Snowflake Garland or Winter. It is from 1972 and one of the patterns I see that seems to be gaining in popularity! Some of the other patterns have really gotten expensive! I really like the snowflake pattern. I am going to be looking for more.

Here are a couple of good websites for those who like to collect Pyrex, Fire King, Corning Ware. They will help you date and authenticate your finds! Corelle Corner - this site dates the patterns Pyrex LoveThanks [HASH]**GypsyGirl** Those are great sites. I found a lot of patterns I love.

I scored at Goodwill and got 5 pieces of vintage corning-ware with lids in the cornflower blue pattern for my collection including a rare sauce cup with removable handle all for under $20!
Also, does everyone know that they can use Bar Keepers Friend to remove utensil marks and surface marks from used / vintage dinnerware? Total game changer for me!

Luanne, great price on the Fossil purse. They have some really nice stuff. I hope it washes up nicely. How cool that the basket is square in shape, that's uncommon. Do you know what you will do with it yet?
Mystuffandnat, that's too bad that you've had a bad experience(s) garage saling. I often see old sewing items at yard sales or the thrift store, and sometimes pick them up, and think how neat they are (especially when they are still on their original cards) but since I don't collect them I always put them back. I am drawn to vintage things. Sounds like you did quite well at the thrift store. Too bad about the shoes!
Scrapbookbobbie, I have found that thrift stores have really raised their prices in recent years, especially on anything they think is collectible. When I read about your margarita glass I immediately started envisioning ways to use it as a photo prop, lol. I often buy things just because I think they will make neat photo props. So it sounds like we might be reading about more Pyrex finds from you in the future, lol!
Megmc, dishes are something I often pick up and then put back down, because cupboard space and storage is a real issue for me. I like the idea of having different dishes for different meals or occasions (my cousin and his wife sometimes share on facebook their Moroccan night table setting, their Italian night setting, etc.).
I think of the Peas when I see Pyrex or Fiesta ware at yard sales.
K8smom, it's great that you were able to find several pieces all at one time, and for such a great price. And that's a good tip about the cleaner. I don't collect, but I do have some pieces I use that could benefit from that.
I love reading about everyone's finds. And if anyone wants to or is able to share photos, please do! Especially of some of the rarer and more interesting finds.
One of the shirts I picked up for dh is too short, so I'll be taking it back today to exchange. I have decided not to get the shoes, as I just have soooo many shoes. But they had a couple of other things that caught my eye as well, so I will give them a second look.
Thanks for sharing, everyone!

I have been looking for Christmas sweaters as it seems ugly Christmas sweater parties are really catching on. Well, apparently the thrift shops are catching on too because their prices are ridiculous. Although I did find one for 7 bucks. I swear it was one I owned years ago. Also found one for DH but he doesn't think it is ugly enough. And men's Christmas sweaters are few and far between.

Also hit up Ollie's if you never been there. It's kinda like a Big Lots but a bit better (depending on the store)..if your a scrapper they have some scrap stuff. Just went to Tuesday Morning about 2wks ago there and they have a good scrap section. Side note: if you like Mexican food El Rodeo is amazing. Decent prices. Huge menu ...which is online I believe.

So glad you asked because I was going to start a post!
I got informed of a yard sale across the street from one of my friends that I just HAD to go to. An older gentlemen had passed away and my friend said the family was selling his clothes to get the house, which has just sold, cleaned out. I was thinking 'nahhh...my 17 year old and my DH won't be interested in an 80something year old man's clothes', but she mentioned and enourmous amount of ties for $1 each, so I figured why not? You can't beat that price no matter where you shop so I drug DS 17 out of bed to go pick some ties. Y'all I got there and was FLOORED. This old guy had to be the snazziest dresser EVER. According to his DIL he was a bit of a shut-in, twice retired and shopped online EVERY DAY. My friend said the UPS or FED EX truck came every single day. When the family got in the house they found over 1,000 suits/sport coats/blazers, 2500 ties, hundreds of pairs of unworn shoes, more than 50 pairs of cowboy boots, not to mention the pants, shirts, sweaters, belts....he was apparently Nordstrom's best customer lol. There was not one item in that lot that was not a brand name - some so ritzy I had to look them up because they are too rich for my wallet. I called DH after browsing a bit and realizing Dapper Dan wore the same size everything as DH. DH says 'why don't you just grab me some stuff you think I'll like?' I said there was no way, so much stuff I was overwhelmed. It was like being in the world's largest haberdashery. He had to come, and quick! lol
After two hours of shopping and trying on, this is what we walked away with: 1-100% camel hair blazer 3-dress coats 2 pairs of dress slacks (DH says the coats alone were probably worth $2-300each new, and if they were ever worn, you can't tell it - they were all timeless men's pieces) 2 - pairs of Lucky Brand jeans 4- pairs of Carhartt work pants 1-pair Ralph Lauren courduroy slacks 1-pair polo golf khakis 4-dress shirts 1- leather Ralph Lauren belt 13 - ties (Hilfiger, RL, Chaps) 2- pairs of Cole Haan loafers NEVER WORN 1-pair tuxedo shoes (looks worn maybe once by the scuffs on the soles) 1-pair Hilfiger Saddle Oxford wing tips NEVer worn 1-pair Dan Post cowboy boots NEVER WORN 1-shark garment steamer with every possible purchaseable attachment
We spent $150. By my estimation after spending about an hour online when we got home, I think we got OVER $2500 worth of never or lightly used clothing, ties and shoes(and the steamer of course). We were stoked!

I love reading this thread every week! I went to a few thrift stores this weekend on the hunt for Nancy Drew books. I found some at the one store, but they were asking 2.99 each, Im still trying to decide if it was a good deal or not. The other 2 stores I didn't find one!
I am determined to finish my collection of Nancy Drew books, I have mine from my childhood and my grandmothers.

Last weeken DH and I picked up a 60" round pestal ash table with four chairs for $20. I recovered the seats and we sanded the top and put a coat of paint on it. I want to sand it all and restrain next summer. There was a crack in the top but it sanded out.
Love it! It gives us so much more space in my tiny dining room.

Beachgirl55, it's funny you mention that, because I happened across a couple of Christmas sweaters yesterday at the thrift store, and was really surprised by the pricing, I thought it was quite high. I had not heard of 'ugly Christmas sweater' parties, but it makes sense if that is something that is becoming popular, that thrift stores would catch wind of that and up their prices. Nicole in TX, I love going to thrift stores when I travel to a new area too. Hopefully you will find some cool stuff. Genny, wow, you hit the motherlode! That is the kind of thing that I literally dream about sometimes, lol, coming across a garage sale full of great stuff where I stock up like that. Sounds like some awesome stuff for your dh. I am on a high just reading about it, hehehe, I can imagine how much of an adrenaline rush it was for you guys. Tigerpooh2380, I still have the Nancy Drew yellow pictoral hardcover books I got as a girl, and have added to them over the years. I mostly buy those ones, from the 50s and 60s, though I do have a few of the older blue tweed ones, and even a couple of the newer ones just because they were titles I had not read yet. I have paid that much for a couple of them at thrift stores, because they can be hard to find. Gina, I am envious of the candles, I love the look of multiple white candles for decorating. I have to ask, how big is that disco ball and what do you plan to do with it? Lisa, what a cute set, it really is perfect for the space. And such a great price! I think it's great how you revamped it and freshened it up. Thanks so much for including a photo! Some great, thrifty finds, ladies. Thanks so much for sharing. LOVE reading these posts each week.

We don't have a lot of garage sales yet...it's still so hot. However, I dropped off some things at my parents house this morning and came across these at someone's curb...for FREE!!! I'm not sure what I'm going to plant in them yet. I do want to paint them to compliment my yard. Has anyone found a pottery friendly spray paint they love? I have a cottage-y style house if that helps.

HappyOCgirl those are lovely! I can't believe someone was just throwing them out. How lucky for you! How big are they?
I forgot to add that I exchanged dh's shirt for another that fits nicely. I also bought a bridal veil I had looked at yesterday. I have not yet decided whether or not I will actually wear it for our vow renewal ceremony. But even if I don't, I will use it as a photo prop. I never had a wedding veil, and I have been longing for one lately. They had a bunch of them there, probably for costume use with Hallowe'en coming up. I also bought one of those long nosed masquerade masks. It is just a cheap one, but I think it will photograph nicely.

They are a little over 4 feet tall! The details are little cherubs - so sweet. I will need to take a wire bristle brush to some of the areas and then I'll spray paint them. They are super sturdy and I'm so excited to have them!
