I have lots of family in South OC as we grew up there. I also have teen nieces/nephews up there as well have teen kids so this hits close to home!
The 6 kids were coming home from a night of Halloween fun at Knott's Scary Farm. It was about 2 a.m. and the 16 year old driver lost control of his car. He was the only survivor out of 6 kids. At 16, there are rules about driving others and the time you can drive (not from 11 pm-5 am). So sad that by breaking the rules, all these kids lost their lives. Yes, the accident still could've happened, but the hour, speed, lack of experience and potentially overloaded car, made it more likely.
May the victims rest in peace and may the families find some comfort in the difficult days ahead.
17 yo DD is going to a concert in LA with her cousin/friends on the 25th and I know my niece drives while looking at her phone to change songs. I think I need to say something or I'll never forgive myself should they get in an accident. Don't know how to broach the subject though.
Small update: The paper is now saying he was probably not licensed. Oh wow, that family is going to be screwed up for life because of this but also so are the families of those young ones that lost their lives.

There are always could have, should have and would have's in life. This is certainly one of them. On the flip side, I've seen plenty of older people (today as a matter of fact) driving too fast. My hearts go out to the families and the young man that has to live with this tragic accident.

I'd broach it with DD. Hey DD, I know niece likes to change songs. Why don't you control the music while she drives.
Unfortunately that boy will likely be charged if he was driving in a capacity that he should not have been. I will keep him, his family and the families of the victims in my thoughts.

If I knew this, there is no way I would allow my child to get in a car with her. Bringing something up isn't going to change that behavior when no adults are around to monitor the situation. Your niece obviously has been told it's not OK to use her phone while driving, but she does it anyway...

Horrible and tragic, but part of me really wants to scream at someone because if the rules were followed this wouldn't have happened. As luvnlifelady said, in CA a 16 yr old should not have been driving after 11 pm or with anyone else under 20 yrs old in the car. On the news this morning, they hadn't identified any of the bodies and no one had called into CHP or police looking for a missing child .

I'm in the Pasadena area and know families down in the OC Hope it's not anyone that I know. Hugs & prayers On the OC Register home page, it identifies the 3 boys that were killed (you do not need a subscription to view the page). It does not idenify the girls (as of the last time I looked).

Yes very sad. One of those kids is a neighbor friend of my DD's friend and also attends their highschool. Possibly another victim also attends their school. They are having a candle light vigil Sunday eve at 7 at Capo Valley highschool.

My nieces/nephews go to San Juan Hills so I wonder if they knew any of the kids.

How tragic. I feel for all of those families.
She's your niece, but she drives dangerously. No way would I want my child in her car. In fact, I wouldn't want her driving until she can do safely. Aside from suggesting to her that she have someone else control the music and the phone while she is behind the wheel and at all times, I would also tell her about this tragic accident and how easily it happened. I'm really direct w/my sister's kids(both older) and I talk to them like I talk to my own kids, because I love them as my own. Not sure if that's the dynamic in your relationship. Can your dd get to LA another way? Can all the friends take the train together? Is it over the top expensive to rent a limo and everyone pay their share? They can hoot, holler, play music, text and have a blast w/o endangering anyone. Safety is more important than a kid who's ticked off because mom wouldn't let her drive w/a distracted driver. No safe way to get there means no concert.

He always needs time to ponder so that's ok since we still have a few weeks.
