I just want to cry, watching this. So much history and art and architecture, so many centuries of worship and love. I'm so sorry this is happening.

I am extremely sad. Thanks so much for keeping us informed and updated. I agree, sad that you have to do it, even though it is much appreciated.

Is it odd that the only thing I can think about right now is the organ? What a loss that would be.

Just devastating I feel a little like I did after the earthquake in Christchurch that brought down the cathedral there. Glad I had the chance to see it as was, sad that I’ll never have the chance again - even rebuilt it will always be different - and sadder still for those directly affected, as well as those who haven’t been and will now miss out. Wasn’t one of our peas planning to attend mass there on Easter Sunday? ETA I misremembered, it wasn’t Easter Sunday specifically.

I’m glad to hear that they’ve attempted (&hopefully been successful) to save at least a few items. Losing the building is awful enough, but then you start thinking of all the building held and the tragedy is just magnified.

I can't bear to watch. I know it isn't all about me, but seeing Notre Dame has been on my bucket list as long as I can remember.

I'm fighting back tears as I watch this. I have stood in front of that beautiful building and looked at it with awe. One just doesn't expect building of this importance and historical significance to disappear from our landscape. I pray that miraculously somehow it can be saved. And that no lives will be lost. Me too. I'm so incredibly sad not just for Paris, but for the amount of history literally going up in flames. It's an incredible, special place that photos really do not do justice.

Press conference right now: it appears they are containing and even almost controlling the fire in one of the towers. They're not expecting for the towers or belfry to collapse right now. Things are looking up or at least, no longer progressing negatively. They saved the tunic of Saint Louis, the holy crown of thorns, some chalices, a few paintings but none of the really big ones (impossible to get those off the wall swiftly). The 'Trésor' (treasure room) is untouched as of now, fortunately.
All nearby buildings have been evacuated. The lateral façades of the cathedral could fall on them if they were to collapse. The inhabitants are being cared for by the City of Paris through emergency rehousing until the fire stops burning and the inspection of the façade has been completed.

Good news: all the artworks have been saved. The treasure of the cathedral is intact, the crown of thorns, the holy sacraments

Good news: all the artworks have been saved. Monseigneur Chauvet and the mayor of Paris are saying the contrary right now in the press conference, alas. Some art has been lost (they're worried about the big paintings). The Trésor, indeed, is safe at the moment, fortunately. Fingers crossed!

I'm just sick over this!! The history and beauty, not just of the building but the contents as well!! My son just signed up for a spring break school trip to France! It is so sad that he will go to that beautiful city and not get to experience Notre Dame the way I did in 1992.

Official confirmation: the fire is becoming less intense. They fear the collapse of the central scaffolding. They are working hard to cool both the building and the scaffolding down now.
Official confirmation 2: art is still inside. Due to the heat, they're dealing with lead in fusion regarding the very valuable stained glass windows. They will try to save as much as they can through the night.
Official confirmation 3: 2/3 of the roofing are completely ravaged.
One serious injured fireman. They beg people to remain cautious: things can suddenly change at this stage of the fire even if it's looking better, especially with the extra handicap of dealing with it during the night.
These confirmations come straight from the fireman in charge of speaking to the press.

That's so sad! I hope the brave firefighters are okay. Prayers for everyone trying to fight this fire.

I've been watching all afternoon and everyone's reaction mirrors my emotions - heartbroken, sick to my stomach, devastated at what has been lost and what we may never even know was lost. So many mysteries and centuries of history. Every time they mention the crown of thorns, the magnitude of this seems larger.
As they've been talking about rebuilding on the news this afternoon, I've wondered whether there are enough skilled stonemasons left around the world to recreate what has been lost and damaged. (And speaking of mysteries and codes and secret messages, much of that is in the stone work, right?) I assume there are sufficient stained glass artists and woodworkers to undertake a massive rebuilding project like this but I just don't have a sense that there are that many stone masons around anymore.
And are a lot of the relics stored under the building? I may be misremembering that detail from a different Cathedral.

I'm sorry to hear about the fireman - hopefully he makes a full recovery. I'm glad there weren't any fatalities. I assume it was after visiting hours? I can't imagine being inside when a fire broke out - those towers are so narrow and there are so many people!

The bells of the Sacré Cœur are sounding right now. Several churches in France are currently calling the religious people of France to pray. It's a touching gesture (even to my black, atheist heart).

As they've been talking about rebuilding on the news this afternoon, I've wondered whether there are enough skilled stonemasons left around the world to recreate what has been lost and damaged. There are in Europe, no worries. The French still train stonemasons. We have a very well-regarded education and patronage system in regards to this. This is not a problem. The billions of euros it will cost, however, are. I don't doubt the government will pull through to find the money (sigh, my taxes). Oh, the irony with Paris hosting the Olympic Games (and the bill we'll foot for those). And are a lot of the relics stored under the building? The crypt is untouched. I assume it was after visiting hours? I think it was either after or at the very end. I can't remember when it closes at this time of the year. Is it 18h30? Anyhoo, fire started around 18h45.

Considering how long it's taken for the La Sagrada Familia to be completed - I can't even imagine how long the rebuilding effort would take.

Considering how long it's taken for the La Sagrada Familia to be completed - I can't even imagine how long the rebuilding effort would take. Ah, my SO's specialty (he's from Barcelona)! La Sagrada Familia faced (and still faces to a certain extent) issues Notre-Dame won't: lack of plans (quite a bit had to be improvised), lack of finances, political instability. While smaller, it is in no way comparable to ND de Paris. This doesn't mean it won't take a long time to rebuild ND but it should be nowhere near to the time the Sagrada Familia has taken (and still takes). The cathedral of Reims took less than 20 years to be rebuilt after the end of WWI. I'd guess ND would be around the same time. They would be far more comparable projects than the mad story of the Sagrada Familia.

I am super sad. I don't understand one thing saying the artwork was saved and the next saying it was inside? Some art was saved, some not. They are continuing to try to save as much as possible. We won't know until the fire is completely out and daylight has returned. The religious pieces stored in the Trésor room are all fine (fire didn't get there).

Maybe with the Olympics being in Paris like you said, that the Olympics could set up some kind of donation plan going towards the Cathedral? Now that would be wishful thinking on my part..
