I haven't ever really had a part time job except when I worked at Pepsi Center.
We could use some extra income and so I was thinking maybe a part time job, but I don't really know where to start or if it is possible.
How many hours does a part time position usually mean? How does one go about finding good options?
Eta: I teach high school in a rural setting, but within 30 minutes of two cities.

Did you ever think of doing substitute teaching? I love it as a part-time job because you can choose which days you work, you can take a week off if you want, and you can choose which types of jobs to take. At least around here we can because we have a huge shortage of subs.

A friend recently took a part time that is 5 hours a week on Saturday afternoon. You look the same places you would look for a full time job... newspaper, job postings at the bigger companies in your area and network. Tell every person you know or meet that you are looking for a part time job.

A teacher friend of mine makes money on the side teaching English online to kids in China.
It has been my unfortunate recent experience that unless you're lucky, a lot of part-time jobs require open availability and/or go to people who are willing to put that job first. They don't want someone who can just quit if the treatment becomes unbearable or the hours unreasonable.

My local CC has classes and camps all through the summer (and even during the school year after school hours).

I work part time( 7-8 hrs/week) as a personal shopper for our local high-end grocery store. I hate grocery shopping for myself, but I like doing it for others.

Tutoring? I used to make a lot tutoring, but needed a break from kids. But maybe you could try upper elementary kids in your subject area for a change?
Teachers Pay Teachers? That’s where I make my money now. I like it because I can spend the summer loading my store and then it makes money for me all year long.

I always hear others suggesting Uber Eats (or similar). You could do that on evenings and weekends.

So no I guess subbing wouldn't work if you're already in the classroom full time. In that case I'd go with tutoring. The teacher who tutored my dd in algebra made a good bit of extra money tutoring higher math (high school). If your high school subject isn't one where kids usually need much tutoring you could do math or language arts with younger kids.

My daughter actually gets some of her things from Teachers Pay Teachers. Great site. And I have worked part-time jobs at churches (15-25 hours week) and working at the hospital PRN teaching childbirth and infant massage classes. There I would work maybe 8-16 hours a week depending on how many classes I scheduled myself to teach.

After school, I tutor ACT and SAT prep about 4-6 hours a week. In the summer I'll tutor 10-12 hours a week. Those few hours add up and I squirrel that money away. It pays for my hobbies and our vacation each year.

My last uber driver was a ex-teacher. Started driving part time to supplement his teacher salary and then found out he could make more driving than teaching. Now we were visiting one of the worst states for teacher salaries, so not sure that comparison works everywhere, but it's certainly flexible.

I've found quite a few interesting but off the wall part time and temporary gigs through Indeed. I worked as a color specialist for a fabric manufacturer, as a planter at a greenhouse, demonstrating high end sewing machines, packing fabric sample collections for shipment to interior designers, dog walking for a company that allows dogs to come to work. . . None of them super-high pay (around $20/ hour average) and often for a limited time, but I've enjoyed the variety.

You could probably make bank driving for Uber in your local college towns on the weekends. 😂

I have a part time job at Banana Republic. I’ve worked part time at White House Black Market and Macys in the past. I love it. It’s fast paced and I get to help people. I also love the discount on the clothes! I work 15-20 hours a week. I just walked around the mall and looked for stores that had a sign in the window saying they were hiring. Then I went online and applied.

I have seen people get a cottage food license and bake on the side. You could also try eBay resale by thrifting and going to yardsales.

A lot of places like Menards hire this time of year in their garden center. Maybe a garden center near you?

I've been a substitute teacher for almost four years and I'll warn you, the pay is terrible, no benefits, and the kids can be rotten (depending on the school... I'm picky where I sub). For me it's a job I do until I graduate, not something I want to continue beyond that.

What about online tutoring? There are homework and tutoring apps that are a growing thing now. If you teach a certain subject I bet you could do that.
There is tutor.com
I think she has more trouble with this other app but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it.
Anyway, you would get to set your hours when you are available. I'm not sure of the pay.

Possibilities: Sign up with a tutoring agency. They collect the $ and pay you. Search for contract online work. My DIL made some $$ doing this.
ETA: She used the term "freelance" in her job search. Freelancers, freelance work
Whoever she worked for--they posted the jobs they had, she placed a bid (I'll do this for $$ amount). She ended up with one person who told her "I like your work. If you bid on my jobs I'll select you each time."
Eventually she landed a very good full time job with her online work. She still works from home, gets paid well and has had about 4 trips to San Francisco for company meetings.
