Hi, on friday evening DS10 fell off a skateboard and his clavicle on one side looked different than the other. Went to Urgent Care and after an x-ray the Dr. said he broke his collarbone/clavicle. He's in a sling but she said there's nothing really to do and it heals on it's own. We're following up with an Orthopedist hopefully tomorrow. It's strange but it doesn't seem to be too painful.
How long did it take to heal for you or your child? How long did they wear the sling? If one side looked different than the other did it eventually look the same after time?
Thanks!

I broke my collar bone when I was in high school. It happened while I was away with my youth group on winter retreat. I remember I got really good drugs that had me chatting at my roommate in the middle of the night. I slept in a chair that night with my legs on the bed.
I wore a figure 8 brace. I'm sorry I don't remember how long or how much pain I was in. I hope your ds feels better soon!

The collarbone is THE most common break in kids. My son broke his when he was 6. He wore a sling for 4 weeks, but it didn't hurt any more after 2 weeks. The emergency room doctor said that with collarbones, if the two broken ends are in the same room, they will find each other and heal. For whatever reason, it is a bone that in many cases heals fairly quickly and easily, especially in kids.

I broke my collarbone when I was 3. I fell out of bed. I healed fine and I don't remember it at all, yet I have other memories at that age. I don't have any pain at all and all is symmetrical.

My oldest son broke his collarbone when he was 8 (tripped over a clump of grass!). He wore the figure 8 sling for about 3 weeks. Never had a problem with it since (he's now 21).

My son broke his the night before Mother' Day goofing around. He didn't want to bother us, so early on Mother's Day he came and told his Dad. He got x-rayed and got a sling. It didn't slow him down much. Fast forward to football practice (he was a freshman in HS), and I finally got around to taking him in for his football physical, and oops!, he shouldn't have been playing so soon. I get so close to Mother of the Year, and then I blow it.

My youngest broke his collarbone when he was six. He wore the sling for about a week, and then he couldn't get him to wear it anymore. It healed fine, at first he had a little bump, but then it healed just fine.

My 9lb 7oz DS broke his collarbone being born. We had to pin the sleeve of his sleepers to immobilize it for about 2 weeks.

One of my boys broke his collarbone while in middle school. He was at the local Relay for Life event playing football with a big group of kids. One of his older brothers took him over to an orthopedic surgeon friend of ours who was there with his family. By the time I got the call, our friend had already examined and diagnosed him. We followed up with him in his office two days later (Monday). My son slept sitting up for a few night's to keep the pressure off it, but it really healed pretty quickly.

My husband broke his collarbone as a child. I would have to ask him about the recovery, but as for how it looks, I would never have guessed it had ever been broken. Even after hearing the story and then looking at it I could see no sign of any prior injury.

My bff's 6yo just broke her collarbone a couple of weeks ago. It was a pretty bad break and it looked kind of deformed (it was really sticking out a lot compared to her other collarbone). She was sent home and was told to wear the sling for 3-5 weeks. She went back to school, and another little girl fell and sort of headbutted her right into her collarbone so my friend took her back to the orthopedist. Turns out, the straightened her collarbone, so she doesn't have to worry about it healing weird. Probably not the least painful way for that to happen, but she's fine now.

I broke mine when I was 14z fell of a bike. Was riding stupid with no hands... In the dark... Down a hill.... fast Stupid! I had a brace I wore for about 6 weeks. The last two weeks were just for good measure. By the 4th week I was much better and able to pull the brace off myself. I'll be honest, the first two weeks sucked and were very painful.
Hope your DS heals quickly!!

I broke my collarbone as a child. All they could do is an ace bandage on it in a figure eight.

I just broke my collar bone this weekend. I've got my arm in a sling and wrapped tight with an ace bandage. No surgery, just time to heal. The only time it's painful is getting up or laying down. Sitting on the sofa or anything but a straight back chair is pretty ouchy too. I need a TV straight up over my bed on the ceiling, lol. I was lunging a young colt in my arena and a steer broke the gate of the cows' pasture and they came raging out into the field next to the arena. The colt bolted, my right arm got pulled straight out and I fell forward. Apparently, that's a "classic" way to break the clavicle, falling forward with your arm straight out. Who knew? Hope your son heals soon!

I broke mine as a kid and never even knew it. I found out when I was in a car accident in my late 20's and the doctor said "when did you break your collarbone" to which I replied never and she said guess again. Mine isn't healed right needless to say, it doesn't bother me but could when I get older.
