Hi Peas Who Read: I guess I will start the reading thread this week. I have not been reading as much as I wish I could lately. I thought about seeing Gone, Girl today and decided instead to opt for dozing and reading. It was heavenly! I am in the middle of four books and only finished one this week, a quick novella called The Death Factory by Greg Iles. This is a prequel to Natchez Burning and fills in a few gaps. Super quick and a decent read - 4/5 stars. One of the books I am trudging through is Code Name: Verity. I am not really liking it so far, but I will keep at it for at least 50 more pages and see if it piques my interest any further. You all are up! What's sitting by your bed or on your Kindle or playing on Audio? Lisa

I'm currently reading Eleanor and Park (finally, I've been meaning to get to it for awhile now) and I'm re-reading The Glass Castle for a book discussion with friends. We're all re-reading it, mostly for an excuse to go out to dinner

I'm in the middle of Voyager by Diana Gabadon. Very much enjoying this one.
I read Code Name Verity awhile ago-picked it up because if pea recommendations. I really enjoyed it though it was detail heavy. Stick with it, it's a great story.

None for me last week. Today I am starting Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. I haven't found anything that has really kept me wanting to read it, hope this one does it!

The Glass Castleis really good. I picked up another of Jeanette Walls (I think that's right.) books because TGC was so enjoyable. The second book was good, too.
Last night, I finished reading Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. I had went through a SK phase in my teen years. But, some how missed reading The Shining. It was interesting. But, not scary. Just weird, IMO. Books don't scare me. But, if I allowed it to, I could really get freaked out over Doctor Sleep. I highly recommend it if you like that genre.
ETA: Next up is a Jonathan Maberry zombie book. I think it's called Fall of Night.

Thanks so much for starting this thread! Yesterday was dd's birthday and I was totally preoccupied!
Code name verity is on my list but I'm wondering if I should take it off. It has been there for quite some time and I haven't been compelled to start.
Has anyone read anything by Catherine Ryan Hyde? Her books keep popping up as recommended for me but I haven't taken he plunge yet. We are heading on vacation this week and some of her books sound interesting.
Has anyone read the marrying of Chani Kauffman? My mom recommended it to me yesterday.
Thanks, Paige.

I've only read Gone Girl, kinda scared of reading her others because I don't like dark books. I'd love to know what you or others think of this one. Also, I came across this kindle package deal on Amazon: Gone Girl, Dark Places, and Sharp Objects all for 12.79 for anyone interested.

gottapeanow, you really should read The Glass Castle, it's one of THOSE books that you can't put down while reading and that really sticks with you. eta: meant to say, should read it sooner rather than later, I know it's in your pile

[HASH]paigepea, you are welcome! I haven't read anything by CRH, but I thought the movie "Pay It Forward" was incredible. I am sure the book is even more powerful. OK, [HASH]goldynn, I moved The Glass Castle way up on my reading pile. I have three books checked out from the library; then I will start on that. Lisa

I finished two books this week.
Bitter River by Julia Keller. This is the second in a fairly new mystery series set in West Virginia. I am enjoying it. I have the third (and latest) in the series on reserve at the library and am looking forward to it.
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. I liked this one, but didn't love it. For such a long book, it read very quickly.
ETA: Deleted the reason I didn't love the book. Sorry - I didn't think that was a spoiler.

Lisa I'm reading Natchez Burning and frustrated I can't seem to find a couple of hours to just sit and read right now, because I hate getting pulled away from the story. I didn't know about The Death Factory, but will be adding it to my list. I read Code Name: Verity last year and really loved it, so I hope you stick with it. A couple of recent reads just didn't do it for me. I hated the whole premise of The Hypnotist's Love Story, but thought What Alice Forgot was okay. I have a couple of other lIane Moriarty books waiting to read ( Big Little Lies and Three Wishes). Jojo Moynes is the other hit or miss author for me. I loved The Girl You Left Behind, thought The Last Letter from Your Lover was okay, but really didn't like One Plus One.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng - It is the story of a mixed race couple and their children. Their oldest daughter commits suicide and it is the story of they family coping with that event. Each family member analyzes why she did and how the secrets they have kept from each other and even from themselves contributed to the tragedy. A solid read.

I read Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan this week, and am much indebted to the Peas who recommended it. A well written documentary of a very rare and sometimes deadly autoimmune disease of the brain. It made me feel very grateful for a healthy family. Such a monster disease, but thankfully, she has recovered.
This week I'm reading Last Train to Paris by Michele Zackheim and finding it very interesting. I just picked it up at the library because I liked the cover, and usually that is not the best option for a good read. It is inspired by a true event in 1937, but the author's foreward lets you know that most of the characters are fictional.
I don't want to start a book war, but I feel somewhat compelled to say that I absolutely hated The Glass Castle. I found it unbelievable in parts, and the parents actions were so abusive that I was sickened . I just don't enjoy reading about such a completely dysfunctional family.

I'm almost finished with Coincidence (Ironmonger) It was recommended here a few weeks back and I'm so glad someone shared. I love the book. It's well written and has compelling plot and characters. At the heart of the book is this question: What determines the course of our lives? Chance or destiny? In case you are interested, it's 1.99 at Amazon right now.
Sorry I can't give anyone credit for the share...I forgot who read it.

I read Sarah Jio's Morning Glory. I would pronounce it as fair to middling.
I'm now reading Elizabeth Little's Dear Daughter. This is about a woman who, after spending years in prison for the murder of her mother, is released on a technicality. She then goes on a search to find out who did kill her mother. I'm about halfway through, and so far so good.

I finished The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks by E. Lockhart. I was looking for a book that fit a challenge I am doing and needed a YA book with a strong female protagonist. This was one that was suggested. Since I recently read and enjoyed We Were Liars by the same author I fave this one a try. I really liked this one too! Very different from Liars. Less heavy. It is about a girl who goes to a boarding school that has one of those "good old boys" clubs. While she enjoys dating one of the good old boys, it bothers her she cannot be in the secret club. So she uses her brain to get everyone at the school rattled. I would recommend this one!

I never warmed up to this one, although I know many who love, love, love it. Sigh. I finished Widow of the South by Robert Hicks for Book Club. It's about a woman whose house in Franklin, Tennessee is used as a field hospital after the Civil War battle, she tends those who are brought to her home, and then ultimately (this is on the back cover, so I don't think I'm spoiling it) reburies the dead of the battle, cataloging their final resting places, and responding to family members who send her letters inquiring about their remains. It is based upon a true story. I thought it was good, and then I thought it ended very strongly - the ending was quite beautifully written.
