Yesterday I was doing laundry and was in and out of my bedroom closet multiple times. When I finally quit for the day and climbed into bed, my dog wouldn’t get onto the bed and kept looking at my closet doors. I realized my black kitty wasn’t in her usual night spot and realized she must have walked into the closet without me noticing. It is a long closet with three sliding doors, so she could have walked in one end while I was loading things into the other end. I opened the closet and she came running out. No big deal, right?
Well, this morning when I opened the closet at the opposite end to grab clothes for the day, I smelled something - ugh! I feel badly that she must have been in the closet a long time and needed to use the litter box. And not to pee. She didn’t poop on the carpeting though, which I appreciate, but she did go into this large plastic container that I had on the closet floor for change. It was partially rolled and partially loose change. This is gross, but when I gloved up and removed the chunks, but some of the money that was clinging to it fell back into the tub! I know that people say money is filthy, but I’m not going to have to wonder which coins were in contact with the poop and which were ok.
So my morning is being spent boiling the change that was loose and I am going to unroll a few rolls and boil it too. Thankfully, I still had the cheap IKEA stock pot that I used to make play dough when the kids were small. I’m not using my good cookware for this! After the money has been sufficiently sanitized, the IKEA pot is going into the trash along with the slotted spoon I’m using. I’ll replace the spoon, but I don’t need the pot and would have sold it at my moving yard sale anyway.
This is so not what I had planned for my morning. And to those of you who would have just tossed the whole tub, money and all, there is well over $300 in change in that container - closer to $500 if you count the rolled money, too much for me to just toss. This change has been accumulating for years. My dad taught me to toss all my change into a drawer or tub and only spend paper money. He said if it isn’t worth breaking a dollar, don’t buy it. This was what he taught me when I was a child, and I still do it to this day. I think, mainly, because dad did it too.
He kept his in his bottom nightstand drawer. Every year on our birthday, we were allowed to grab the equivalent of our years in handfuls. Whatever made it to his bed, we kept. The money hitting the floor was put back into the change bin. My sisters would go into his room and pile all the quarters into one spot, thinking they would get the most for their haul. Dad wasn’t stupid and would mix all the money together right before you started. I was the smart one because I scooped and held my hand palm up so that more money would remain in my hand.
I always had had fond memories of the drawer of change. Now, I hope that I can forget this morning and don’t think of this every time I throw my change into the bin.
So I have two questions.
First, how long should be sufficient to boil the coins for them to be sanitized? Should I be adding vinegar or bleach to the water? This is so gross to me. I admit that I am a bit of a germaphobe as it is.
Second question, what is the grossest thing you have ever done?

I would just swish the coins in bleach water, not bother boiling them, and dry them and call it good. It is just cat crap.

My squeamishness wouldn’t be quelled with just bleach. Heck, I have 4 cats and scoop cat crap daily, but I wear a fresh pair of disposable plastic gloves when I do. And then at least weekly, when I am doing the toilets, I pour bleach into the bowl first and toss in the scoops to soak a bit and to sanitize them. I use bleach when I take the litter boxes to the backyard to clean them too, but bleach alone on money doesn’t feel enough, you know? Yes, I know I have issues.

There was a flood that impacted the bank DH interviewed for. Paper money they can get replaced through the treasury, but the coins were covered in the floodwater filth and the treasury won't replace it. Brainstorming what to do, they ended up putting all the coins in bins in the back of a pickup truck and going to the car wash. They used the spray hose at the car wash to clean them.
Your cat-poop money is probably less disgusting than most of the money in circulation even before you boiled it.

Very odd, cats usually don’t poop or pee in a space where they are trapped.

A friend of mine was "company cleaning"-her mother in law was on her way over. She gathered up a bunch of stuff and threw it in the hall closet. Two weeks later she could not figure out where the smell and small moths were coming from-turns out she had thrown a carved pumpkin that her ds had made at preschool into the closet, LOL! This story always makes me feel better when my house is a wreck.

Very odd, cats usually don’t poop or pee in a space where they are trapped. What do you think happens when feral cats are in traps for TNR? They don't hold it indefinitely. My elderly cat once got trapped in my bedroom all day, with the door shut. She used the carpet because she couldn't wait. I'd add some bleach to the water.

I can’t believe the smell of them when thrown into the trash can and they sit a few days until pickup day.

I would just throw the coins in the sink with bleach and water and let soak for 5 minutes. That's it. Boiling is too much work. But this is an amusing story. Thanks for sharing!

My mom scooped up some Easter eggs that my youngest sisters had re-hidden and they ended up in the closet. It took forever to figure out that nightmare smell! It still haunts me! Hahahaha!

I think they are pretty sanitized by now... money is just dirty. Maybe do another rinse in clean water.

The cat doesn't boil it's butt or paws after scraping the litter over it's pee and poop and you seem okay with it on your bed. I think you're okay with just bleachy water.

I added bleach after I posted this and thought a bit more about it. The first batch is disinfected and laying on an old towel in front of the fan to dry. I just hope I don’t get any surprise company today. I can just see my neighbor walking over to the stove to peek in the pot to see what I’m cooking. Cats will go in an enclosed area if they are scared or really need to go. I made the mistake of transporting mine when I went to my sister’s house for a week once. They had travelled in the cage many times before without issue. I think I just didn’t leave enough time between feeding them their dinner and leaving for the trip. Two of them pooped in their cages during the trip. Fortunately, they did so onto the puppy pads that I put over their blankets and I could just stop and toss it out.

My late grandmother would put leftovers like chicken bones in her car overnight if there wasn't any room in the fridge. She couldn't put them outside because wildlife. Anyway, after one Thanksgiving, G told me to put the turkey carcass in her car. I put it in her trunk, and we both forgot about it...until two weeks later, when she bought some bird seed and asked the store clerk to put the bags in her trunk. What a surprise for both of them! Good thing it was winter.

My husband had to fix a car at work because there was a smell. He finally started digging under the seats - the owner had put a half-eaten KFC chicken pie under there (uhh no idea why) and forgot about it. It was summer. There were flies.
My husband literally couldn't eat KFC for years after. He also told me that people were pigs in their cars. My friends laugh at me because my car is always spotless inside - this is the real reason why!

Second question, what is the grossest thing you have ever done? Scrubbed poop off of walls, carpet, crib, ds... Yeah. He has Autism and short bowel syndrome. If he had a poop explosion while sleeping, he would paint himself, his crib, and walls with his poop. Oh and he also did it in his toddler bed a few times. Lightning McQueen looked more like Mater LOLOLOLOL

This thread has given me the well needed break I needed from my work today!!
I'll add a story. It was dark one Christmas morning and I was 1/2 asleep and walked over to the Christmas tree to turn on the lights with one of those press the button with your foot things. I kept pushing the button in my sock covered foot and nothing would happen. All of a sudden I realized I wasn't stepping on the button , I was actually stepping on a nice pile of poop that our dog had left for us! Ugh, that was soooo gross!!

I admit that I am a bit of a germaphobe as it is. Second question, what is the grossest thing you have ever done? 1) Seconds in boiling water would be more than ample. Or bleach. Or vinegar. You may be making this a tad more difficult on yourself than you need to. 2) Oh Lexica. You really do not want me to answer the gross things that I have had to handle. Just take my word that your problem is far easier to resolve than mine. 3) There is a very simple answer to your feelings about these coins. Take them all to the bank after you feel like you've sufficiently cleaned them. Even if you want change for your upcoming sale. You could ask a teller to simply exchange your old rolls for new rolls. You could make up an excuse, like you're looking for a particular year or something like that if you think it would be easier. And, if your conscience pricks at that, take a little time to look for a particular year, or something else specific, and use those coins to start your new pot.

Not having any idea that there were real eggs in the package, it sat a little too long. Yeah, that was interesting

I know they have an instinct to only toilet in one location but I think the call of nature got stronger than that instinct at some point.
