Hi,
I am just wondering if anyone has found a great items to sort 8.5x11 paper (cardstock, not printed paper) that is hopefully very inexpensive or repurposed. Just interested in ideas, thanks!

I use a heavy duty plastic magazine holder. They have them at Wal-Mart and Office Max, Staples, etc.

Do you find the paper curves if stored upright? That is my concern as I had it in hanging files and some had curved, so now it doesn't work for a card base. Maybe with something sturdier it won't curve?

I use a hanging file box. I haven't had a curving problem, but the paper sits in the files horizontally...

I used to use magazine files - now I use the recollections cubes (that have four slots). Once upon a time, a long time ago I use a literature sorter - mine was cardboard and unlikely to be acid-free but I was using what I had on hand but they are available in laminate, plastic, wood...

Ikea has magazine holders that are not too expensive. Right now I store my paper flat since I don't have a ton of the 8.5x11 size

I store my small collection in magazine holders too. As long as they have enough paper in them they shouldn’t curve.

I also store my 8 1/2 x 11 card stock in magazine holders because I only have shelves in my craft room. I haven't noticed anything curling but the holders are pretty full.

Hanging files for me as well. Either you need to put less paper in each file, or your holder needs to be nice and full to keep the paper from flopping over.

I’ve had 2 paper takers for years. One for whole 8.5x11 & 1 for scraps. I have *just* out grown that arrangement, so now both are whole sheets & all my scraps are in drawers.

You can put the wood paint stirrers on either side to keep the paper from curving.

I store my small collection in magazine holders too. As long as they have enough paper in them they shouldn’t curve. A good excuse to buy some more paper, sounds like I use a magazine holder type of thing too. Some of the thinner paper is in packaging with a rigid piece of cardboard, or in a plastic file folder type of thing, and my holder is the right size for my current stash. The paint stir sticks is a good tip. I'll have to remember that.

Walmart has some sturdy metal, magazine-style paper holders. I saw them with the office supply section and I wish I could remember the name, but they're a black metal holder with like a mesh side.
I haven't bought any of them, but they looked like they would be a good option.

I used to store mine flat on those letter trays for the top of the desk. When my collection got too big i switched to the heavy plastic magazine holders. Now all my cardstock (12x12 and 8.5x11) is stored vertically this way on the lower two shelves of my bookshelf. My holders are 3/4 full and I have no problem with curling. I am much happier with the vertical storage because the cardstock is easier to access.

I'm using some that aren't all that sturdy and would like to replace them.

I have mine in a literature sorter similar to THIS ONE. Because I knew I wouldn’t need slots that are 2” apart to hold full reams of paper, I drilled extra holes in the sides evenly spaced between the existing holes before I assembled the shelf unit. Instead of having 24 slots, now each shelf has 48. Since the unit only came with enough shelves for the original number of holes, I got a sheet of 1/8” Masonite (think the material wooden clipboards are usually made of) and had DH help me cut it into additional shelf pieces the exact same size as the originals. You can get a big bag of metal shelf pegs from Amazon because you won’t have enough. Like THESE. Then because the ends of the Masonite are a little ragged and hard to sand smooth, I bought a pack of black document spine covers like THESE and cut them down to size to fit the short exposed ends of the wood so the shelf would have a more finished appearance. It looks great, holds a lot of colors of cardstock each in its own slot and the paper all stays nice and flat. I did the same thing for my 12x12 cardstock, starting with a 15”x15”x39” Ikea kitchen upper cabinet. Drilled extra holes in between the original holes, cut enough shelves to fit and it works perfectly.

Don't worry; I've yet to meet a piece of furniture I wasn't able to disassemble. We're extremely well stocked on tools and power equipment. I may end up just building one if I don't find something that suits. Can't be any harder than cabinetry.

The ones I have are constructed of fairly cheap laminated particle board, not decent wood, which makes it a little trickier. Once you take the screws out the holes can get pretty loose. I looked into building one for my 12x12 when I couldn’t find something readymade that would work and it was actually more expensive than converting the IKEA cabinet and adding extra shelves.

It's crazy how expensive some crafty furniture can be; I mean I know it's a specialized market and all, but yikes. And a lot of it isn't even good furniture; particle board and MDF don't exactly make for the most sturdy of pieces.

I was just pricing out the predrilled MDF stuff at the home improvement store and I was blown away by how much it would cost to make a paper shelf to my specs. Using the Ikea cabinet actually saved me money and looks nice. Same with the literature sorter, I have three of them all with the extra shelves.

I love the literature sorter, I will keep an eye out for one of those. I have seen some offices put stuff f/s on craigs list, so fingers crossed!
