There was a long thread on the old Pea board of people who were making these. I confess that I haven't made one in ages. I was watching the Today Show this morning and I was inspired to start making them again. Last week Hoda showed a video that she was able to get put together to help raise money for children's cancer research. She got Sara Barielles and Cindy Loper to make a mash up of Brave and True Colors. It's really good. In the video there are children with cancer painting and lip synching to the song. Unknown to Hoda one of the children was the daughter of Devon Stills an NFL football player. He has raised $1M so far for children's cancer research himself. So, long story short, the little girl Leah had surgery to remove her cancerous tumor last week and they did a little story on her and her dad. They showed pictures of her resting after her surgery and she was covered in a Quilt for Kids quilt. I recognized the pattern as I have made several of them myself. It made it a little more real to see that the quilts really do help comfort kids with cancer.

That was my thread! I still make a couple of these every year, usually with fabric leftover from other projects. They are a quick project for me and it's always nice to send off a box.

I've made a couple, but it's been a while. I was recently thinking that I need to get going again and make a couple more. I have fabric set aside to make 2, but haven't had the opportunity to sit down and actually sew them. Thanks for the reminder!
If you make any, please post a picture!

I'm not familiar with the Quilts for Kids pattern but i sure have lots of fabric. I don't get much time to sew and our modern quilt guild tries to sew enough quilts for each kid aging out of the foster care system in our county to receive one, so am not sure I'd have time to make these too. Thanks so much to those of you who do this... what a great cause!

It looks like Downey isn't a sponsor anymore, it is just Quilts for Kids. I'm not sure if the orignal thread is in the saved threads area on here, but a lot of Peas made quilts and there were lots of pictures too!

Thanks! We hope it's a good idea... we want them to have something special. Sometimes I wonder if an 18yo kid would prefer a $20 microfleece blanket from Costco though...

I do make baby quilts and donate, but decided to give them to local causes. There are a lot of groups that take them. And some have less rules if you don't like their rules as they tend to be very specific.
