I have a brand new great-niece and great-nephew and I've been kicking around the idea of making quiet books for them.
I've been looking at a lot of ideas online and have created a pretty large board of ideas on Pinterest. It seems like it's going to be a lot more time consuming than I was originally hoping, so I've decided to create books that will be bound either by metal rings, or ribbons that go through grommets. That way I can give them the books for Christmas with probably very few pages done, but can add more pages at any time. I thought I'd do some really simple pages while they're still very young and can add more complicated pages as they get older.
I have so many basic questions that I can't seem to find good answers for. If you've made one (or someone has given one to your child), what size do you think is best? I was hoping to keeping the page size pretty small for smaller hands, but as I'm looking at ideas it looks like I'll need to make them larger in order to fit on the things that make the pages fun.
I have a lot more questions, but for now I'll wait to see if anyone here has ever made them. I'd love any and all advice on tackling this project. TIA!

I don't have any advice, but I do love the idea of the quiet books. And I love your idea of putting it on metal rings or ribbons through grommets. Then you don't have to wear yourself out trying to get a million pages done at once!

I suggest using metal rings-little ones will learn to untie the ribbons. Use grommets to keep holes from ripping. By using the rings, you can always change out any pages that damaged or dirty.

My mom made me one when I was a kid, and I remember looking through it and playing with the different pages. A dear friend made one for my Goddaughter, but I haven't made one yet, but I'd like to at some point.

I didn't make one, but I bought one It was a cloth book. You could do buttons, zippers, match balloons to snaps based on colour, pull a kite to fly, tie a shoelace. There were different textures to feel - soft, prickly, Krinkly. Both of my dds enjoyed the quiet book.

I made one for my grand daughter. I used large rings to bind all the pages and cover together. If you go to Imagine our life blog, she has free patterns(I used the majority of her patterns as they were very detailed) you will have trouble deciding which pages to make as she has that many to choose from!

Thanks teepea, that's actually a blog that I've pinned but hadn't really taken a good look at until you mentioned it. Did you follow her advice as far as the page sizes and the manner of grommet placement and binding? For some reason I'm stuck on that and I can't even think about getting started until I make a firm decision. JoAnn Fabrics has a sale on felt this week and I really want to get there to take advantage of it, so I need to figure this out soon! Thanks to all for your input.

I pretty much used her directions for the pages. I used felt for all the pieces to each page. Almost all the pages I made were the ones she had patterns for in 2011-when I made my grand daughters book. I made quite a few pages so it's a big book but because I used very large ring binders she can take pages out and now can share pages with her sister! I did a left and right ,or double page layouts and I backed the next page onto the previous page so there's continuity to the pages. I did the dinosaur, the astronaut, the circus train, the socks w/washer and dryer(all those little socks were so cute) the cookie/cookie sheet page, the Starbucks page-well, you get the idea-most all of the 2011 patterns! I also added a few pages I found elsewhere. A snowman page with hats and scarves and an ice skate for tying laces.it was a Christmas gift that I had worked on for quite awhile. I made a cloth cover for it out of kid fabric. Hope you have as much fun with it as I did

Since the babies are still so young I'm going to start with some simpler pages -- I found a lion face with lots of ribbon "taggies" surrounding it for the fur. Maybe that'll be my first page. OK I guess I need to just bite the bullet and get started.
