I have horrible TMJ issues for 37 years (I'm 49). I've done everything ever doctor has asked of me so try to cure, help, relieve pain; and in almost 40 years there have been some doozies. In 8/2017 I had my left joint replaced with titanium. Through all of this I've had physical therapy twice a week, weekly or every other week for it. I finally completed a 5 year stint in 11/2018
My TMJ dr gave me a referral last week to start again. I want to cry. If I refuse, she stops seeing me so I can't refuse.
Ugh. Does anyone else get upset by the continual medical appointments all the time?
The twice a week appointments mean I have to re-work my work schedule and stay late other days of the week. I have to do the manual stretching that makes me sore after appointments. I lose my make up each time because she uses a cream on my face when she massages. They're 60 minute appointments, plus 20 minutes to the office & 20 back to my office. I have another person's hand in my mouth for 60 minutes.

I am so sorry, after completing 5 years worth of PT, I wouldn't want to start again, that is for sure. I am so sorry you have to deal with this.

to answer your question yes. I am tired of the appointments. I am tired of the treatments. I am tired of revolving all aspects of my life around health care, so I can work, so I can have insurance. I am only 50 darn it and I just want to live.

On my. I'm so sorry. As another chronic pain sufferer, I completely understand your reluctance to "get back on the hamster wheel." Dr visits, get hopes up, then have them plummet to the ground again. It's incredibly difficult and I get it thoroughly. Lots of warm and kind thoughts coming at you.....

The appointments take so much energy away from other more enjoyable things. Yet we have to keep working twd the best quality of life possible, despite our illness or injury. I hate it, too, but hope springs eternal.

I understand completely!
My pain doc will be retiring soon and every time I think about it I have a panic attack. He has been referring patients for a few months now and only has a handful of us left. I'm terrified of him leaving me but I understand why he needs to retire.
When I was diagnosed so many years ago I made a deal with myself that I would try any treatment that a trusted physician threw at me that didn't require surgery. I know it's a pain (no pun intended) but don't give up. We can't fail if we never give up. (((hugs)))

OMG yes. They aren't even all for me, but between me and my 2 kids, there is always someone having to go to a doctor, or me having to talk someone out of the freakout zone to go see some specialist, or something. I'm so effing sick of it.

I've had more appointments/tests etc. in the last year than I did in the previous 20 years. I'm tired of it. I don't have chronic pain, but I have crazy fatigue due to my chronic illness (CLL). I've been taking Wednesdays off since January and it's helped, but after 2 days of work, I hit the wall.

I completely understand. I hate having my life revolve around appointments, medications, and my plans for the day having to change because I’m having a flare up. Right now, I need to see the OBGYN and have another mammogram and I know it is important, but I keep putting it off because I don’t want to spend another minute in a medical facility. I hate that I can’t really make plans too far ahead because I might be in horrible pain when the day arrives. I tend to say that I will do my best to make it and then hope for the best.

TONS of sympathy for you. I simply cannot imagine the energy that the THOUGHT of the doctors' appointments expends, much less having to do it. It doesn't sound like it worked for you. Why put yourself through this again? Maybe another doctor IS the better choice? This is a difficult way to live and if it works, then it's worth it. If it doesn't work, or only causes you additional pain (and it sounds painful to me to have to do this twice weekly), then maybe try not doing it. If you really want to stay with your doctor, talk with her. Over 500 visits to the PT in 5 years should be enough to prove you've put your all into it.
I am so sorry. I don't want to give you advice when you aren't asking for any. Sometimes, though, we just need to hear enough is enough. Whatever you choose is the right answer for you. I am so sorry you are in so much pain. Mouth pain in excruciating and it sucks that you have it.

After I picked up my monthly med refills last night, I noticed that my current doctor cut my pain meds in half. Nothing to indicate why, no explanation, no call about it. Nothing. So yes, I am now thinking I need to switch to an internist who can collect all the information that I have with all the other doctors and make better choices for me. It's just one more fight.

Have you tried botox? I read it can help tmj. It's helping me a lot with migraines.
I'm sorry you are in such pain for so long. Unimaginable.

I am only 50 darn it and I just want to live. All of this. I'm tired of suffering. I'm also tired of the new things that show up and perplex my doctors to the point where I get "your test results are normal" and "don't worry about it." I'm tired of worrying that they are missing something big. And tired of missing family events and what my family has to deal with (missing events, having to go to the ER, appts, issues with meds, etc.) I, fortunately, made it until I could retire, but had to retire early due to my illnesses. I'm firmly convinced that my autoimmune issues were triggered by having mononucleosis as a teen. I didn't get it from kissing, either; noooo...I got it from sharing a soda with someone else who had it, didn't stay home as directed by her doctor, and didn't tell anyone. That said; there are days that are great and I live for those, regardless how tired the other days make me.

I've tried everything from psych testing, relation therapy, biometric therapy, home exerciser machines, TENS Unit, Infrared heating therapy at home, different types of machines at the PT office, general exercise programs...I'm not only on pain meds, but seizure meds to disrupt the nerves, muscle relaxers, blood pressure meds to calm me down, acupuncture, needling...I've literally tried it all.

Chronic pain sucks the life out of me and I am a totally different person.
My jaw joints are a mess. I've had 7 surgeries on them. There is no head of the condoyle (the ball part of the joint), they seem to grow bony matter that impedes the joint moving and grows into the muscles around it. They've been diseased with TMJ for almost 40 years. So I also have arthritis in them.
I haven't tried grain & nut, but I have tried dairy (mostly because I'm intolerant). No difference. I'm not sure what cutting out grains & nuts would offer me?

Oftentimes arthritis is aggravated by inflammation, and it you could have systemic inflammation from a sensitivity or unknown allergy. I have chronic pain and autoimmune symptoms without a diagnosis, but diet has helped me live a more normal life. For example, I had severe TMJ symptoms that went away when I discovered I reacted to nightshades. If I were you I'd consider food sensitivity testing, allergy testing, and a no-holds-barred elimination diet like Whole 30 or AIP.

We have a very good friend that has horrible TMJ. He finally resorted to medical marijuana and it has been life changing. Not sure if that is an option where you are. But he was able to severely cut back on the pain medications, to almost zero.

That sounds absolutely awful! Just wanted to say it sucks. I had zinging pain from jaw up to my right temple due to night clenching for week or so. Mouth guard and two days of a muscle relaxer and pain meds finally took care of it.
I can't even imagine your pain. 😥

Maybe your doctor's office made a mistake with your prescription. Please call and check about that. At the very least they should give you a reason.
I really am so sorry for this pain you're in.

We have a very good friend that has horrible TMJ. He finally resorted to medical marijuana and it has been life changing. Not sure if that is an option where you are. But he was able to severely cut back on the pain medications, to almost zero. I was going to suggest medical marijuana as well. I'm not sure what state you are in (or if you are even in the USA-it's legal in Canada for instance) but medical marijuana has helped me enormously with the pain from my chronic migraines. My neurologist suggested I apply for my MM card last year so I applied for my card here in Maryland last summer and I was approved for it within about a month-I got it last August. By the time this happened my medical insurance company (Cigna) who I pay $1,500 to a month for two people had reduced my coverage of the medication I take when I get a migraine to stop the pain down to two doses for a month for Zomig tablets. 2 doses! And it was a generic. They completely refused to cover the Zomig nasal spray that works much better. Last week I had a migraine that last 6 days. This week it's been 3 days. Those 2 doses would have been gone in 2 days. I thank God every day for my wonderful neurologist and that my state has approved medical marijuana. Once approved I was able to go into any medical marijuana dispensary in the state and the people working there will help me find something that works for my particular pain. Actually I've found the best way to find a strain (a strain is a type of MM) that helps with my particular pain is to first pick a dispensary, see what they have in stock by looking up their menu online and then plugging in the strain names that are in stock into a website called leafly.com where it will show you each strain's characteristics and what it does. Some fight inflammation, some are best for pain, some are best for depression and stress, some are great for hunger (if you don't eat). They are each different. There are different methods of delivery into your body too. The most popular form is vaping which is kinda like smoking but you are inhaling a vapor instead of smoke which is better for your lungs. What I like about this method is the pain relief is very quick (usually within 1-2 minutes). Edibles are another form but since you eat it you have to wait for it to hit your digestive system (15-20 minutes before pain relief). Tinctures are another method and with this one you put drops of the THC/CBD mixture under your tongue-again it has to hit your system so it takes a little longer. There are more methods and there are various forms of MM to vape-oil cartridges, flower (the weed itself) and concentrates. If your state has legalized medical marijuana you might want to consider this as a way to deal with your chronic pain especially with the current opiod crisis and the way the doctors are now cutting chronic pain patients pain medications. My sister has been a chronic pain patient for over 20 years with absolutely no problems taking her opiod mediation that she desperately needs. Still her doctor cut her medication and she now has to exist on only 1/3 of the amount she was taking for the past 20 years. She is afraid to try MM because they make her take a pee test in order to get the pain meds she needs every month. It's a messed up system for sure because if she was able to use the MM in conjunction with her pain meds she might be able to eventually reduce them and she wouldn't be in excruciating pain every day after 4pm until the next morning when her last pain pill wears off (since they lowered the dose so much). I wish you the very best and am sending you big hugs because I know how chronic pain is-it's so difficult to live with. I truly hope you are able to find a way to get some relief soon and feel better.

I see others have suggested medical marijuana.
Closely related, but you might try CDB oil. A friend's husband has very bad arthritis pain and he has found relief with the CDB oil. She cautions that one must read labels etc as some companies put too much "filler" in the oil. If you want to try it, I'll give you a link to where she purchase hers.

My friend was pushed through a plate glass sliding door when she was 8. Somehow the er doctors didn’t catch that the one tiny cut was a deep cut that cut her jaw muscle at the joint. I think she said that it might have went into her joint?
She did everything too, braces, spacers, teeth pulled, fake teeth added, muscle stretchers, Botox,.... Finally she found a surgeon who was able to fix that spot. She still has a bit of pain but nothing like before.
I hope you can find a miracle person like she did.
