I'm in the beginning stages of planning a trip to CA for June 2015.
We (husband, 12 year old son & myself) need to start in San Diego for a college graduation the first weekend and end up in San Francisco the following weekend so I can run a half marathon.
Should we spend the week driving up the coast OR spend the first half of the week in San Diego, fly one way & spend the remaining time in San Francisco?
Additionally - we can have free lodging in the San Diego area which helps offset the cost of one way flights.

That depends. Do you like sitting in a car taking in the sights, or out doing things? I personally would fly to SF and then go sight seeing: Monterey, Big Sur, Carmel, Santa Cruz, Napa, and SF. But again, it just depends upon what you like to do.

If you have to rent a car to drive to SF, you might want to take into account that one-way car rentals can be really expensive. It might be cheaper just to fly to SF. Once there, you can get almost everywhere with public transportation and walking.

Any suggestions I would make really depend on what your family enjoys doing. Is there anything in particular you want to see or do in California? If you don't mind paying for the one-way rental, I definitely think driving up the coast would be the way to go. The drive from San Luis Obispo up the Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur is breathtaking.

If we were to drive, we'd spend a day at Disneyland, we'd go to a baseball game (if they were playing at home), we'd check out Santa Barbara & we'd do the aquarium in Monterey Bay.
If we were to fly, we'd have the ability to do more in each of the cities. In San Diego - the zoo, the wild animal park, a baseball game, a downtown Segway tour (if my kiddo is old enough) are all possibilities. I lived near San Diego when I was a kid and have visited many times, but not as an adult. My husband has been there once & my son not at all.
My husband & I went to San Francisco 12 years ago and my kiddo and I went there for about a day and a half before & after we drove up to Arcata last year. So we've all seen some of the basics, but we'd do more like maybe Alcatraz, Golden Gate park, a city tour & baseball game if we flew up.
I've considered the cost of a one way car rental & if the quote I got from Expedia is to be believed, it wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. I think we might all feel more relaxed if we had a "home base" to explore from instead of being constantly on the move & spending the night somewhere different for most of the trip. But, this is likely to be the last trip in a long time to CA & probably the only one for a week where we could cover the middle of the state with our son.

I would drive up the coast. We have driven from SD to Monterey in a day, including lunch in SLO and a tour of the Heart Castle. If you have a week, you can easily spend a day at Disney, get to Santa Barbara the next day and in Monterey comfortably on the third, leaving you plenty of time in San Francisco. I would make arrangements to turn in the rental car as soon as I hit San Francisco.
