I keep buying them from Trader Joes but they never open. I change the water and trim the bottom everyday. Is flower food necessary? Does cutting the leaves off effect it? I googled but could only find that it needs sunlight, but I think it was talking about when still planted the blooms need sunlight to open. Does the cut flower in a vase need sunlight? Where I keep mine it gets none.

I got Trader Joe’s peonies as a birthday gift this week. I cut them once and removed all of the leaves before putting them in the water. It has been three days and they have opened, I haven’t touched them since I put them in the water and it hasn’t been all that sunny.

I put mine in my kitchen window, which is a sunny location. I've only had one not open (and trust me, a significant number of peonies make an appearance in my kitchen during the season!) I did keep one bouquet on my kitchen island, where they did open, but not as quickly as when they are in the window.

Peonies are my favorite flower. In fact, the flower girl at our wedding scattered peony petals instead of rose petals at the wedding.
Huh. I’ve never not had them open. Weird!

I buy 2 bouquets a week from them, all season long, every year. This year, I’ve had quite a few bouquets not open. I’m using the same vase and putting them in the same location I always do. I’ve never had this problem before this year.

I think I'm must be overtired as I sat here a bit too long wondering not only why would collecting pennies in a vase require tips?
Although I have no tips, I do love those flowers.

Cut flowers open where it’s warm.
For peonies you can try forcing them by putting them in a vase with warm water—but it does accelerate the shortness of their lifespan.
As s general rule, to keep CUT flowers longer, they like to be kept cool. Why florists keep flowers in coolers.
If they have roots and are in dirt, they prefer warmth/sunshine to thrive.

One of my girlfriends is a flower farmer, specializing in daffodils, tulips, dahlias, sunflowers, anemones, hydrangeas, lisianthus , and peonies.
This year everything is late, slow start. It may be that they were cut too soon to come to market.

Everything is late for sure! My peonies have not even opened yet, and normally they are done by now. Mine are in a bit of a shady spot, so I think that's the delay. My friend's peonies opened last weekend, but hers are in a sunny spot. I have very nice sized plants, so no buying peonies for me. I could keep you all in bouquets for a week!

Peonies have a waxy coating on the blooms that has to come off before they can open. On the bush, the sun takes care of this. If these blooms were picked during really cloudy weather or were picked too early, the coating may still be too thick for the blooms to open.
Try holding the unopened blooms stem up and running some warm water over the flower buds. Pat them dry, then place back in vase. It may or may not work.
I know my buds are usually covered with big ants that don't really bite. Supposedly the ants eat the waxy coating off the blooms, but I've read that this is not actually the case. The sun was the the coating off and the ants eat the nectar in the bloom. I'm in GA and my peonies finished blooming a month ago. With all the rain, the blooms were not so great this year.
