Just a random thought I had today. I hate driving, especially in rush-hour traffic. My commute is about seven miles but does cross major roads. If I leave work at 5, it typically takes me an hour and twenty minutes to drive home (it can take ten or fifteen minutes just to get off our campus).
I could really use the exercise, too. I haven't ridden a bike in years but would be willing to invest in a decent one.
Would you commute on a bike? Have you?

I live too far to ride a bike, 35 miles one way. And it is difficult to get to my workplace without getting on the freeway. In fact, there is one small stretch of freeway where bikes are allowed, but I would never try it! So, no I wouldn’t ride a bike to work. In your case, if the roads aren’t too dangerous, I would try it. To take an hour to go 7 miles must be frustrating!

I haven't done it for years, but would definitely consider it given the amount of time it is taking you to go 7 miles by car. If there was a place to shower at work I would be all in.

Could you borrow (or rent) a bike for a couple of days to try it out? I would hate to invest in a bike for commuting then find that I hated it, and I would want to test out crossing the busy intersections during rush hour. I would also want to make sure that I wouldn't be all sweaty when I got to work on a hot day (I was so icky after 45 minutes of yard work at 7:30 a.m. the other day that I had to take a shower before doing anything else).
The hour+ for 7 miles would drive me crazy, so I get the temptation.

I would love to if I had a safe enough route. It takes me 15 minutes in my car, so it would be doable by bike. But the longest road there is super narrow with no room for a bike.

While I love bike riding, I hate doing so in traffic. The fact that you have to cross major roads would probably be all it would take for me to decide against it.

I would commute on a bike if I felt safe. I wouldn’t want to cycle on a very busy road daily!

I don't know that I would because it is so hot and humid here and I would have to change clothes, do my hair and make up and all that when I got to work, plus I don't feel it is that safe where I am.
My nephew does though (he lives in another country) - he bikes about 9 miles to work and 9 miles back home each day. Men don't have to worry about hair, make up and heels though
I had a friend that didn't bike to work because it was too far, but she pretty much biked everywhere else (the store, restaurants, etc).
If it were feasible for you do to so, you should give it a try.

I once worked approximately 90 seconds from home by car. I still didnt walk or bike because ds was in school and I wouldnt have wanted to walk home to get the car to go get him if needed. Now i work way too far to do any of that. I would still worry if any main roads were involved

I used to and it was fantastic!!!
Riding in the mornings was awesome, so quiet and little traffic.
Coming home in the afternoons was busier, but I got my exercise in and it cleared my head from working.
I live within 3 miles of my work at that time.
I’ve been trying to return to biking more for shopping, going to the bank, coffee dates with friends, and to the gym.

It would depend on whether the route was bike-friendly or not. Do other people cycle in the area? If it takes that long to travel by car, traffic must move pretty slowly - that would lean me more toward the yes column. I'd make sure I had a helmet, blinkies, wore something bright, and was very familiar with cycling safety laws, especially with crossing the intersections.

DH did for a year or two when we were first married, before we had a second car. But there was a gym on base where he could shower, it was all side roads, and he’s a guy. No makeup or complicated morning routine.

No, too far and involves highway travel. If I wasn't killed first it works take me hours to get to work and back, on top of a 12 hour shift, so it's not possible.
ETA also, it would be dark much of the year. I'm too young to die at the wheels of an ATL motorist!

I haven't seen other people biking on my commute, but this is southeast Michigan, where the motor vehicle is king. Traffic moves very slowly -- I can take a slightly faster route home, but actually getting to that road is the problem. No matter which way I take, it's a long and nerve-wracking commute, and I am an anxious driver anyway. My work attire is business very casual (typically nice jeans and a decent shirt), but I hadn't factored in hair and makeup. My increased outlay on sunscreen might cancel out savings on gas. lol

I used to ride to work three days a week, when I was much younger and much fitter. It was only about 10km. I used to drive in on Monday and take three days worth of clothes to keep at work for Tue/Wed/Thur then drive again on Friday to take the clothes home.
I would recommend it, it’s good exercise. If possible try and find a bike track to ride along, or try to avoid main roads. I had some some hairy experiences with arsehole drivers.
I couldn’t ride now, I work about 35km from home, it would take me half the day to get there! 😁

I commute by e-bike. It has pedal assist so going to work, I don’t exert myself too much because I can’t shower at work so I just change out of my cycling gear but on the way home, I try to challenge myself. I’m an overweight, mid-forties, desk-bound professional so this has been a god-send for me to get a little bit of exercise. I’m comfortable on the e-bike because it has a throttle so I know just how fast I can zip through intersections or through traffic. I lived on my bike as a kid and young teenager but it’s been 25 years since I’ve really ridden and I’m in love. I recently did 40 km all over my community visiting farmer’s markets and local breweries and I didn’t really want to go home

I wish I could - too dangerous and too difficult. I live at the top of a mountain (well, a CT mountain at 900 feet, lol) and getting up and down would be difficult. Plus the roads are very curvy with no space, at all, for a bike. I'd be taking my life in my hands.

I was just thinking of wearing my regular work clothes, which tells you I haven't put much thought into this. I can't shower at work, either. I saw e-bikes on a bike shop website and had no idea what they were.

I have to do kid pickups/dropoffs, but if I were 7 miles away and didn't have that responsibility, I would test it out! I would need a shower probably in the summer. I have several colleagues who commute by bike (Chicago) and my BIL commutes about 17 miles round trip every day unless it's too cold/snowy/icy. But he'll bike in the winter.

Nope! Not in a million years would I bike to work/home in rush hour traffic. I've witnessed three different accidents that involved cyclists. One involved a city bus. Also, I had a friend in college who was struck by a car while riding a bike. She ended up in the hospital for a few days. I understand that you could also be involved in a car accident while driving but I feel you have a fighting chance in a car.
If you are nervous driving my guess is that you will be nervous riding a bike.

If I’m headed to the gym or yoga after work, I wear shorts and a tank.

We have bike lanes on some of the busiest roads and never would I want to ride a bike on those roads. It just seems too dangerous. I was traumatized as a child when I saw a car hit a motorcycle on the road. Now bikes and motorcycles on the road make me nervous.

What are the bike laws in your city? Here, an adult cyclist cannot ride on sidewalks so it wouldn't necessarily be faster to ride a bike. If driving in heavy traffic makes you nervous I'm sure the same traffic on a bike would be equally nerve racking.
I'd borrow a bike and try it before investing in one. But I can't see me riding to work and I only have a five mile commute. Traffic on the main throughfares is too heavy and alternate routes through residential areas would not be practical.

No. It's not safe (I know so many people who have been hit by cars on bikes), and I don't want to be all sweaty at work.

I had a bicycle in Japan. Some places I was able to go by bicycle because it was just more convenient. I had to use public transportation or my car if I were going a greater distance. Riding was great and it saved me a lot of time sitting around on buses and trains. I only stopped riding a bicycle because I got hit by a truck and my boyfriend asked me to stop. He gave me a car shortly after that.
