I'm guilty of saying that watching people on top of their cars on the news. This week by idiots, I mean DH and I. Our "why"? Because its fast, powerful, and invisible until it's too late. Once again, were getting more rain than we can handle and have had flash flood warnings all week long. The night before last we finished working on floors around 11 right as it was starting to storm. We waited about 20 minutes and headed home when we realized it was going to keep raining. I was in my SUV and DH was right behind me in a Veloster (terrifying) We started out and about 5 miles out of town we went over a hill and around a curve and as the nose of my car rounded the turn water rushed over my hood and turned my car towards the left ditch. I was able to scream holy crap multiple times and somehow managed to get to the other side while panicking trying to find DH and eventually seeing his headlights in the water. He made it to the other side and we sat on the opposite side stopping traffic and ready to help anyone who got stuck coming the same way until someone stopped the traffic there too. We continued on and talked the rest of the way home so we could kind of watch together. There were so many critters on the road, likely to g to escape the water and after another 20 miles or so we were driving down a straight highway and a rush of water came over the road and swept both of us all the way to the left, turned me around completely, pushed him past me and I was able to somehow climb out if the ditch. The cars seem ok now that they're dried out, the cover on the bottom of mine was ripped off and I had mud and grass stuck in my sunroof. We've driven these roads for years and years with no problems and these areas are not areas that usually flood, the weather has just been way too much. If you're driving and hear warnings, please listen to them. That was the second time ever that I've had to stop and seriously allow myself to calm before I could drive. Attaching some photos of what were dealing with right now, the pic of the water rushing over the side of the road (2nd to last, see the mailbox?) is a huge hill, the water is probably 10 foot there, and the "lake' is usually a field. The bridge usually has a road under it. The bucket is the amount of rain collected in the one storm.

Scary, thank you for the warning and please be careful. Water is often underestimated and one has a false sense of security in a vehicle.

I live in a mountainous area with lots of waters that are fine one minute and dangerous the next. I am pretty much like a cat with running water now. It's a big fat nope, and I'll just go around.

Several years ago, my aunt left my cousin's house early morning. Maybe duskish. There was some flooding in the area. Same thing happened to her, it came on fast and hard. She was trapped in the water in her car for a long time. My cousin came to rescue her and both almost were in major trouble.
I'm glad you and your dh are ok.

I'm so glad you are both alright. That sounds terrifying!
My parents are in the very westernmost part of PA, and they've had a few communities along the Shenango River and others evacuated.
Same stories are abounding... Driven these roads forever, never ever saw water there, until it was. Be safe!

I would never drive through flood waters, but you're right, sometimes it's invisible. My boyfriend at the time was driving us home through the rain once. Normal suburban street, somewhere you'd never expect flooding, but there was a dip in the road and a blocked drain. I had one second to think the road ahead looked funny and suddenly we were in water coming over our hood. So scary and I'm glad you're ok!

As I am watching the news all i keep saying out loud is "Turn around don't drown" Do you ever come home from vacation through Binghamton? I swear we would get hit by rain so hard that you could not see through it. You could not stop because you could not see the side of the road. Almost hit a car once because they were stopped on the highway. Water is truly a powerful and dangerous force.

I doubt I'll ever intentionally drive through a puddle!

Our reactive behaviours are so interesting.
My instinct was to put my feet up as if that would help and squeal "oh shit oh shit oh shit" while I was trying to steer and turn the wipers on. I didnt realize I was under until I realized I was turning.
I need to look up how to properly drive if you're unexpectedly in water, I realized I have no idea outside of our experience with field cars, go cards, and 4 wheelers in the creek.
I need to teach my kids better.

It can happen in a split second and it's a good reminder for us all. It's easy to say I would never do that, but sometimes these floods happen so fast. It's so scary.

May your opinion never be changed permanently by a huge danger that you don't see coming. may it never. i live in earthquake country. you never see those coming but i know enough to stay away from falling objects or buildings. we are more likely to get mudslides than floods and i know better than to think i can beat that with a quick drive through the rushing mud. we are all idiots from time to time. it all depends on our poison.

My brother did that driving from Denton to Dallas one night after class. It was a road he drove all the time. Never saw the water until too late. Had to replace the engine, in a Saab. Ouch.

But you did see it coming or at least you had the info to have known better. There were active flash flood warnings. You began driving after dark as another storm was starting. Your very foolish decisions don't make those "idiots" any smarter, they just make you one of them this time. Fortunately, you got lucky and lived to make better choices next time and help others not be idiots.
