Chocolate for me. preferably with thick whipped (real) cream between the layers and strawberries all over the top.
I wanted a chocolate cake when I got married but mum was horrified. Back then it was always the traditional fruit cake (which I hate), so I went that way to make her happy. All I got was some of the icing, but I didn't mind doing that small thing for her.

My favorite cake is also german chocolate so my older sister will usually make it for me by scratch for my birthday. She always makes extra frosting....so good! My mom would make extra frosting and we would put it on Breyers vanilla ice cream-so yummy!

My DH's family did have a special birthday cake, and really, it was godawful. I could not understand why they all loved it. I never said that, of course. It was this banana cake thing baked in a Bundt pan and it weighed a ton. We are not talking a fluffy cake at all. I would take a tiny serving at family celebrations and that was it.
The only special cake in our immediate family is that DS, now 20, requested an ice cream cake many years ago, maybe 10 or so?? I made him one of those frozen ice cream sandwich cakes with fudge and caramel in between the layers. That has been "his" birthday cake ever since!

My oldest's birthday often falls on Mother's Day. One year, my husband volunteered to make his birthday cake, so I could enjoy my day. He simply bought the cheapest box mix he could find, baked a Bundt cake and topped it w/the cheapest canned frosting he could find.
My kids loved it. Loved it. More than the homemade cakes I had been baking for years. Did I mention they loved it?
This has now become our standard birthday cake.
I did mention they loved it, right?

My husband always wants a rainbow chip cake made from a box. (gag) It's his birthday, so he gets what he wants!
My go to cake is german chocolate with coconut pecan icing. (yum)

"My" birthday cake is always a chocolate cake with marshmallow frosting (even better with coconut.) My mom makes it and it is delicious.

My mom always made our cakes/frosting from scratch and we could have whatever we wanted. I always wanted a vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. That's still my favorite kind of cake. My DH doesn't like cake (!) so I usually make him banana bread for his birthday.

I do now: a local restaurant has a gingerbread cake with lemon frosting that is the most delicious thing I've ever tasted. It will be my birthday cake from now til I die.

Plain old angel food cake with whip cream frosting. My mom always made me one. She's been gone almost 10 years, and I haven't had once since.

:)in my mind you just can't beat a homemade carrot cake with cream cheese frosting (not that canned crap) but the real stuff. Now my DH is just the opposite. He wants the carrot cake out of the box with the canned icing. If my mom makes him a homemade one, he doesn't like it as well.

I really love a coconut cake (white cake with 7 minute frosting and coconut, with a bit of coconut milk poured into the layers to make them really moist). But the only way I get one is to make it for myself.

SO's mother (she's not exactly a GOOD mother ) For YEARS would buy him a banana cream pie for his birthday. Every year he dutifully ate it. Problem is, he HATES bananas. He was a very sickly little boy and was forced to eat them all the time. Finally, this past February, he told his mother he hates banana cream pie. He wanted to please her and not make waves. It made me love him more, but also really pissed me off. LOL
I used to get atomic cakes as a kid. I loved those things!

My mom used to make us a birthday cake using a Sara Lee pound cake sliced in half horizontally and filled with ice cream. She then iced it with cool whip. Good memories!

My mom used to make us a birthday cake using a Sara Lee pound cake sliced in half horizontally and filled with ice cream. She then iced it with cool whip. Good memories! This sounds like something my Mom would have made too. She made an amazing Angel Food cake that she sliced in layers and put peppermint flavored whip cream in between the layers. She even dyed them pastel colors so that it looked so pretty when you sliced into it. It was wonderfully refreshing and so yummy. My bday is in August so its a good time of the year to have a cold, cool light refreshing dessert. That was a favorite of mine, but I will never turn away from having a homemade Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese frosting or a homemade German Chocolate cake. Yum!

Our birthday 'cakes' vary. Sometimes they are pie. Sometimes ice cream cake. Sometimes store bought. Sometimes homemade.
My son usually requests a specific chocolate cake. This year it was ice cream cake.
Personally, give me Italian Cream Cake. Best cake ever!

My mom used to make a chocolate roll with whipped cream in the center. I'm sure she still does it for my sister or if asked but I live on the other side of the country. We once were in town the day after dh's birthday and she make him a pumpkin version. I normally ask for a cheese cake now, but last birthday dh let me pick out a cake at a really good Asian bakery....the lady was like why are you buying your own cake?! She did give me free cookies though :-)

Growing up my mom got me vanilla cake with strawberries and peaches in the middle with fresh whipped cream. It was heaven to me. After many years of going without it, she surprised me this year and got it for me.

Apple Pie or Cherry pie. That was always my birthday cake. I don't like cake and icing.

When the kids were little, I used to spend a very long time decorating their cakes.
As they became teens, DD always wanted a Dairy Queen ice cream cake, and DS always wanted a pumpkin pie (he prefers pie over cake). DS has since changed his request to a lemon meringue pie and DD hasn't been home for her birthday in years.

My cake is 'chocolate ice box cake'. It is my grandmother's recipe. Not sure how old it is but my mom ate it when she was young. Yummy…especially when the chocolate chips don't melt all the way! My mom always doubled the recipe because of our large family and took her most of the day to make so she told us that it took 24 hours to 'set'. She just wanted to see her work for day because it was gone in minutes once we dug in! The recipe only calls for it to set for 12 hours!! haha

My favorite is white with buttercream frosting, but I like all kinda. Dh always wants red velvet, dd likes cake without frosting, and ds is only 2 and doesn't really care about cake yet.

As a child it would be Devil's Food cake with chocolate icing.
As an adult it is Black Forest Cake.

Growing up, we tended to usually go for chocolate pudding cake. That's still usually what I want for my birthday, but my older dd loves brownies for hers, & dh and younger dd both like regular chocolate/chocolate cake.

I'm not a huge cake fan. I do like a good homemade carrot cake with cream cheese frosting though. For my birthday, I always asked for pie. Usually a cheesecake piel Then one year my mom was given a recipe for a cheesecake cake. We made it together and it was sooo good. I remember we put a dark cherry topping on it. I'm going to have to see if I still have that recipe. I vaguely remember it as being much more cake like, but still very moist and cheese cake in flavor. Now I'm hungry. Too bad there isn't a cheesecake oatmeal.
