When I was growing up the family official birthday cake was German chocolate. I love German chocolate cake but only from scratch.
My husband's birthday is tomorrow and his favorite is Watergate cake which is made with pistachio pudding and has a whipped pistachio icing. It is so light and fluffy! I made the cakes tonight and will make the icing tomorrow.
Do you have any special family favorites?

I haven't had it in years but I think I'll request one this year!
There is a local bakery that makes a pink champagne cake that is to die for.
It's beautiful & pink too!

Cheesecake. I'm not a huge fan of standard cake, but I adore a good cheesecake. Just about any flavor will do, but my specialties are huckleberry swirl and Triple chocolate.

In my family it was German chocolate too but I didn't like it much as a kid so I always asked for and got homemade angel food with NO frosting. I love cake but don't like it ruined by frosting.

When I was growing up it was whatever flavor we wanted I usually picked Devils food with chocolate icing. Now I don't have a special cake but my sister always wants my Hawaiian wedding cake. Years ago I had a Hawaiian theme birthday for her and found the recipe on line and now it's her favorite cake. It has a white cake with layers of a pudding whip cream mix up make, pineapple, coconut, and is topped with maraschino cherries. It's so good and people are always asking for the recipe.
Another popular request I get is devils food or white cake with my homemade peanut butter icing. The icing is a closely guarded family recipe. I tell people to just get a tub of buttercream and mix in peanut butter which is a total lie. Is that wrong??

I think I need to try champagne cake! Here, it's angel food cake - the 2 step kind, never the one step.

I prefer white. My husband doesn't care what the cake is as long as it's covered in buttercream frosting.

For many years, my special birthday cake has not been a cake, it's been a fresh fruit tart. The kind with all the colorful glazed fruit and berries on top. Pretty to look at, yummy to eat.

I used to. This restaurant where I used to live had the MOST DELICIOUS chocolate cake and you would get a free piece on your birthday. It was right by my office so sometimes I would stop during lunch and grab a slice from the deli portion of the restaurant to take home for later. One year I splurged and bought a whole cake to take along to thanksgiving dinner. My loser family liked the cheapy frozen pies better. What do they know?

Carrot cake for me. I love dense, heavy cakes! DH is the opposite. Angel food cake with lemon icing is the quintessential birthday cake to him.

Coconut cake it's my favorite. SO would rather have Strawberry Shortcake for his birthday lol. I think all the leftover cupcakes and cake I have all the time makes cake no fun for us anymore.

Chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. It was the only cake and frosting my mom made from scratch. So dense and moist! Neither of my kids like peanut butter frosting now so I get a cupcake from our favorite bakery instead of a whole cake.

There's not a cake that I don't call my friend, but my favorite is just basic. I love a yellow cake with chocolate frosting the best.

Pineapple Upside Down cake - the only 'scratch' cake my Mom ever made. Hated it when I was a kid, so she made me chocolate until I got old enough to appreciate her cake. I did the same with all my kids and now Pineapple Upside Down cake is the most requested cake for birthdays.

Most of the people in my family have a particular birthday cake they like. I choose chocolate with salted caramel icing most years. Dh prefers red velvet. Dd1 likes yellow cake (Betty Crocker) with vanilla icing. Dd2 is a wild card. One year aw chose carrot cake, one year it was marble, one year she wanted a neopolitan... This year she wants a homemade ice cream cake. My sister likes funfetti.
When we were kids my mom always mad my dad a pineapple upside down cake for his birthday. She might have made it one other time during the year, but it was definitely infrequent. We all loved that cake. I still think of my dad whenever I see that kind of cake.

Sadly, mine is a DQ ice cream cake. I'm not a huge cake fan. Ice cream takes me to my happy place. And yes, it has to be DQ. Don't bring me any of that 31 flavors stuff.

Yellow with chocolate frosting. I tried something different once for my adult DD's birthday and all holy hell broke out! Apparently I was breaking tradition and that did NOT fly!

Sadly, the costco chocolate cake with the chocolate mouse in the middle. But I have to scrape off the frosting. I really dislike frosting. It has been a while since I've made a good ol' betty crocker cake with canned frosting, that is what I got as a kid and though they aren't fancy they are nostalgic for me.

Yes!! Growing up my mom always got me a Black Forest cake, oh how I miss her. Luckily I've trained my husband to get me a Black Forest cake on my birthday which really makes my heart sing and cry at the same time.
