Another shooting in St. Louis. So sad. All of it is sad, that a teenager has access to a gun and uses it, the families involved. All of it is very sad.
ST LOUIS, Mo. - A white off-duty policeman shot and killed a black teenager in St Louis on Wednesday, officers said, triggering a night of protests just miles from the site of another police shooting of another black youth in the suburb of Ferguson. Police said the 18-year-old was armed and fired three shots while he was being chased by the officer, and they had recovered a gun at the scene. The youth was killed almost two months to the day since sometimes violent protests erupted in Ferguson after a white police officer shot dead unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown. In Wednesday's shooting, the dead man was one of three people who fled after being approached by the officer, a six-year veteran of the department who was working for a private security company, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Sam Dotson said.
The officer, who was wearing his city police uniform, fired 17 shots at the teenager, police added. A crowd of around 200 gathered at the scene in the south St. Louis neighborhood of Shaw, 11 miles (18 km) south of Ferguson. Many of the protesters marched to a major thoroughfare, partially blocking traffic and chanting "Whose streets? Our streets?" as a police helicopter hovered overhead. Teyonna Myers, 23, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper that she was the cousin of the suspect and that he was unarmed when he was killed. "He had a sandwich in his hand, and they thought it was a gun. It's like Michael Brown all over again," she told the paper. Police have not named the teenager.

which part is sad? that a man armed with a 9mm shot an at a police officer? or that the young man was shot and killed?
if you aren't watching the coverage of protests and out of control behavior every.single. night. i'd venture to say your opinion might vary

17 shots? really? there was a reporter on the scene live and they showed the film...there were not 17 shots fired. i watched the crowd last night...google it and watch how the protestors are treating LEOs - i didn't see many 'sandwiches' in the crowd
i saw the back window of a policeman's car broken out. I saw them kicking at cars. Kicking the shit out of people's cars
i saw them screaming - not yelling, not chanting but screaming obscenities at these officers

You know I think there is a lot to be sad about.
I posted a few weeks ago about a state trooper who was murdered in Pennsylvania, another injured. A few responded but it wasn't of particular interest.
The manhunt for Eric Frein continues and there has been little national coverage.
I can't get all fired up about a cop chasing a kid with a gun who fired on the officer.
Every single morning I turn on the tv and there is at least one but usually multiple shootings in Philly - largely black on black crime. But no one wants to talk about that in the context of law enforcement procedures.

it is sad that the nation is so focused on this
the grand jury has convened - let them do their job
they have until january to make their decision
what good is all this yelling and screaming...and interrupting lives...doing?
they interrupted the symphony last week....really?
i still believe that these are opportunists...and they really don't care much about michael brown

Why...was there something else going on? I ask because it seems awfully coincidental that the press was there before the shooting occurred (which they would have had to be to have recorded the 17 shots -or lack thereof). Additionally, the article says that the police stated that 17 shots were fired. Why would the police lie about that? Color me confused. That being said, if you shoot at the police, they shoot back. That's how that goes.

ya know
at this point i don't even know what is going on
the articles i read contradict themselves
i am trying to find the video i saw this morning
i now think it was a video of shots fired at police ...AFTER the shooting
all the articles do agree that the suspect fired three shots at an officer before he was shot and killed.
the suspects gun malfunctioned and the gun was later retrieved
i do know that is it completely unstable in stl
i can not imagine the toll it's taking on residents and business owners - and the families of ALL victims

I can tell you she most definitely cares about Michael Brown, and about race in America, and changing the way our police system thinks and reacts to African Americans. She is the real deal, and so are her many friends in St.Louis who are making this issue International News. Could there be some opportunists.. maybe. But many of the people I see and read about are not. They are dedicated political activist who want to change the system. I am incredibly proud of what she is doing.

ABC has been reporting/updating on it nightly. Last night they reported that law enforcement had been within 200 yards of the guy and still weren't able to catch him. They also showed photos of how he might look now. He's one evasive, evil dude.

I know this isn't greatly significant to the overall picture, but I hope those attending the Cardinals playoff series this weekend are able to stay safe.

But many of the people I see and read about are not. They are dedicated political activist who want to change the system. I am incredibly proud of what she is doing. Your niece is doing awesome work. Good for her! My opinion on a lot of this is as follows: I think that sometimes people are scared to "call a "thing" a "thing." Calling it what it is makes it real. By that I mean that if they acknowledge that a wrong has in fact been done, they have to also acknowledge that the world, as they know it, is NOT the world that truly exists, it just the world that *they* know. That the justice and fair play that they think always exists, doesn't. It's just so much more comforting to think that the bad things that happen to some people are their faults and are not due to something they can't control like, race, gender, whatever. That's a very difficult pill to swallow, because it means that these bad things could happen to you for just as arbitrary and superficial a reason. I think people get so invested in protecting themselves from this that they can't even acknowledge that it is sad when circumstances lead to someone being killed. And it is ALWAYS sad when a life is taken prematurely and violently. I also think it's rather amusing that some have a problem with the protesting, even when it is peaceful. But these are probably the same people that would have had a problem with the suffragettes (is that how you spell that, lol) or the civil rights protestors. And that's my armchair psychologist moment of the day. I'll be here all week.
