I've been thinking about the purchase for a little more than 3 yrs. I took a self-defense class offered by our local sheriff's dept and afterwards, visited the gun store to buy some pepper spray. (one larger one that lives in my bag and a small one, used by joggers that I can either clip onto my camera strap, backpack holding camera stuff, or even on my wrist while I'm out on the trails or in some remote location) While there, I spent some time talking to one of the men behind the counter...asking if they offered classes, continued training above and beyond range time etc. It was also the very first time I even ever touched a gun of any kind. I had my first class last Friday and after the "classroom" stuff, I went to the range and was able to shoot several weapons in hopes of finding something I felt good with. My first two shots were crazy...but then realized that I was only using one of the two sights. I had been leaning towards a revolver because I liked the "simplicity" of a revolver...easy to load, easy to see what's there...not a whole lot of mechanics happening there. But I could not shoot it for shit. I did the best with a Glock 43 9mm. I surprised myself, for sure and I think the instructor was even more surprised than I was. Tonight, on the way home from work I stopped by and purchased the Glock 43x 9mm. I elected to NOT purchase any ammunition, but instead purchased a set of snap caps so that I could practice loading, emptying the magazines and chamber because as I said, it was the mechanics of this pistol that I felt I'd have the biggest problem with. After a few more days of handling the glock, and reading the instruction manual, I may purchase ammunition and head to the range again. Initially, it will live at home with me, not leaving the house. I bought it for self defense. At some point, I may consider keeping it with me when I'm driving long distances or into remote areas. I will be getting a permit with my county, but only to be as completely licensed as I can be. At this point, I have no desire or plans to carry it with me throughout my everyday activities. For those that have a weapon, what do you shoot?

Very cool. You went about it very sound minded. I can't shoot a revolver for shit either, it's because there's so much movement and you have to pull so hard. I'm impressed by anyone that can hit pretty much anything the aim for with one. haha. I have my husband's ex-wife's lady smith .357 as a trophy though. haha.
I carry a Sig p238. Rosewood grip, rainbow titanium, extended grip/clip. Fits really nice in my hand. Not too heavy.

I can’t remember what my handgun is called right this moment. It’s been a couple of years since I took the course & practiced. I should go practice several times a year.
I have it for protection. We live in a big city.

The instructor knew that I liked the simplicity of the revolver. He told me that they could help me improve my shooting...but then also said "why work so hard to be a mediocre shot with the revolver when you can clearly do well with the Glock?" He's right. LOL So the mechanics of the slide I shall conquer.

I love my revolver but I am the only one that seems to be able to shoot accurately with it. It is a S & W hammerless 38 revolver and I love the simplicity of it. I have also shot my dh's Walther 9mm PPQ and I am extremely accurate with it. I am waiting to test shoot its smaller sister, the Walther 9mm PPQ Subcompact. It will be a little smaller in my hand and if it has the same accuracy I will be buying that one for myself.

I don't have a gun but we've taken a gun class because ILs had guns. It was the most empowering class! I learned how hold the gun and how not to get the skin caught in the (forgot what it's called). Learned how to handle calling the police if I shot someone. I left feeling confidant that if I had to handle a gun, I could. It's been many years since the class but the feeling of confidence is still there.

I have my used targets hanging in the garage so every day I see them and think to myself "look what I can do"

We have gun in every room in the house. By my bed in my bedside table there is this huge gun. Hubby said the size is to intimidate since I am not real good at shooting. Once it starts going off, anybody in its sights is going to run as it is nosy and causes big holes. But what I really want is a shot gun. One that just cocking it make the right kind of noise that anybody who is not supposed to be in the house will want to get out in a hurry.

Good for you. I did the lessons and got my CPL license but haven’t purchased a gun yet. DH and I took the class together and it was pretty fun. My aim was actually pretty good. I’m still not comfortable handling a gun though.

So the mechanics of the slide I shall conquer. Just a side note that slides are typically tighter on new guns. The more you practice, the easier it will get. And kudos to you for how much thought and time you are putting into this. That's definitely the right way to go about it.

DH really likes the Glock 43. I find Glocks the easiest to handle. I personally have a Sig, but I don’t carry. Congrats, and good on you for making all the right moves to be an educated and trained gun owner.

I'm proud of you! I often think even people who disagree with guns should just HEAR the sound of it. Just once to know what it sounds like. Just in case. I think the sound of it is something people might want to know. I'm not saying it changes any minds. I'm just saying in the heat of emergencies, it's good to know how LOUD it is.
Jenny you did good!

I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm in the process of taking the gun safety course online so I can get my permit to carry. Then I will need to choose which gun I want based on what I can handle. Got divorced at the end of 2018. I just want it for safety reasons. I probably won't carry it on me, just in my car when traveling and by my bed at home. My ex is really big into guns. He was going to give me a 9mm, I think it was. But I couldn't handle the slide, I'm a wimp. So hopefully I can find a place that I can try some out before I buy.

I am really glad you made an informed choice & decided whats was best for you. And bravo to you for not getting ammunition since you aren't comfortable with it yet. I carry a Tiffany Blue Micro Bel-Air from Kimber. While it can go with me, its usually doesn't unless I am on the highway by myself.
You probable know this, but make sure you have a way to secure it (even if you don't have ammo at home). Thats a personal pet peeve of mine!

Question for you ladies: do any of the classes teach how to clean the gun? Or do you take it to the shop and have them do it?
I have been looking to get one for about 2 years. I have shot a shot gun and a few hand guns when I was younger.
Going to take the next female only class offered by the city's PD and then go to a local range as see what I like.
How often do you take it out and practice?

Question for you ladies: do any of the classes teach how to clean the gun? Or do you take it to the shop and have them do it? Our range offers classes or one on one, but honestly I just looked it up on Youtube. I carry Beretta ( i can't ever spell it right) because I don't like glocks lol. But after my husband died, my gun maintenance person went with him so I had to learn. Youtube had a lot of very simple videos that walked me through step by step and I can now do it without the videos. I have finger scan boxes, but let me tell you when the batteries run out and the keys go missing, they are a pain. I won't go back to them for that reason alone. And before someone jumps on me about the keys, I can't keep my car keys from walking off on a daily basis I should have thought about that when I was looking at them initially lesson learned.

I want to give them my loyalty so that when I need help, they've got every reason to want to assist me. I also have an airline pilot, one of the armed ones, living next door. I can shoot with him PLUS he is a resource for help. (he's out of town, and when I sent him a pic of my pistol, he actually talked about cleaning...with him telling me he cleans his every time he shoots and he'd show me)

Oh and lock box, safe or finger scan box for storage? We use several different things. DH's pistol is in a finger scan, next to his side of the bed. We have a small safe in our office with a seperate pistol. The rest of our guns are in two big safes, locked up.

Together, we go shoot maybe 3x a year. DH and our sons will go shoot once or twice a month (for fun). I could go with them if I wanted, but I usually would rather be doing something else.

DH and I used to go to the shooting range and brunch every Sunday, before we had kids. My personal range gun was a .357. The owner of the range called me Little Ms. Hand Cannon, and told people I could knock the dick off a bird with it. . We went shooting once after DS(1st born) was born, and I felt physically ill the entire time. It was about 2 weeks after Columbine. (The last business trip I took before DS was born I was 5 months pregnant, and went to Littleton, CO.) I was weaning DS, so my hormones and emotions were all over the place. It was bad timing, and unfortunately, I've never recovered. I sold my gun for a camera lens, because that's the only thing I care to shoot with now. I doubt I could knock the dick off a bird, but I think I've played enough COD with DS to still be able to aim DH .45 . Cleaning is easy, and very satisfying! My paternal grandfather had us cleaning guns at 5. You can always YouTube your model for specific tips. Have fun and be safe!

If you sense an intruder having it in the night table ready is your only option, isn’t it? I can’t imagine fiddling with a lock at 3 am if you live alone. Only if you live alone. No guests ever. I am anti-gun but smart enough to know you need access to it in a second’s tine.

Cleaning is pretty easy and should be done after you shoot. I'm sure the range will be happy to teach you, but You Tube can also teach you easily. It provides maintenance and gets you comfortable handling it. That said, Glocks are notorious for not needing much maintenance. Chances of a problem because you didn't clean it regularly are pretty low. One of the reasons they are so beloved is their ability to taking a beating and keep on working.

(Somehow I screwed up the quote feature; and can't figure out how to delete; sorry). As for the slide....The (female) manager at our local gun store gave me a hint that sounded weird but worked for me! She said instead just of using the strength in your arms, use your boob muscles too.

I took a class years ago and I thought it would be easy to shoot but it's harder than you think. Good for you for doing all that you are doing to learn and get better at it. My husband bought me a little pistol that is kept in a safe in the bedroom. I haven't shot since the class. I need to take a class again.
