Check out this map! Zoom in on the Searles Valley area..... TONS of earthquakes! Wow those are pretty big aftershocks. You feel those that's for sure. Prayers for the area.

If you zoom out on the map I posted above, there's been LOTS of activity world wide. Not as much as in the Searles Valley but many quakes.

Just curious, did anyone get an earthquake alert on their phone? We just had that drill so I was wondering if anyone get an alert for this quake. Nope. No phone alert.

Dr Lucy Jones is talking about why no alert. Had to do with it being outside la county and the intensity of shaking that la county received. Thresholds on alerts may need to get modified.

Oh no I was hoping there wouldn't be much damage since it was in an area that's not densely populated First, they have lost power and may be concerned that the generators, if they have them, might not last. Someone may have seen crack or such. They are really not saying much. The house fires seem natural gas fueled, people might not have been home to turn it off.
ETA: they are reporting some damage at the hospital.

I completely missed it and don't think anyone around me noticed a thing either (north San Diego County beach area). For the size of this earthquake, it is lucky that it is in a lightly populated area and near relatively flat towns (few tall buildings and overpasses). At least one hotel is reporting major damage as well as the hospital. USGS is saying 73 aftershocks so far. There could still be a bigger quake, making everything we've seen so far foreshocks.

As long as there is no damage and no one gets hurt, I like them. I think they are fun. I know I'm weird.🤪 Well then, I'm weird too. I think they are fun also as long as no one gets hurt. I live in Maryland and have lived in the tri-state area (Virginia, DC, MD) for most of my life. But, I've been in 3 earthquakes. 2 in Japan and 1 here. They were: 1. Japan, 1984. 6.3 This one was my first and I was in the apartment my soon to be DH rented outside of the base on the 10th floor. It was a big one, with the walls shaking and the frames on the walls beating against the wall. It shook and shook and this one I must admit I was very afraid during-being my first. It wasn't a very well built building. 2. Japan, 2008. 6.7. DS and I were in Tokyo during our tour in Japan while we were celebrating his graduation. We were up high (floor wise) in a well built, very nice hotel. Strangely enough with this one it just felt as though we were lying on air mattresses in the ocean-that nice, swelling and dipping feeling as we lay in our beds. It hit at 1:45 am. We barely felt it-I think because of how well the hotel was built-the Japanese build some of their buildings earthquake proof and they know how to do it well. 3. Annapolis, MD. 2011. 5.8 DS and I were both in our rooms upstairs when the floor started rolling. We came out of our rooms, met in the hallway and both yelled, "Earthquake!" The floor rolled underneath our feet as the house shook, even though the epi center was around 140 miles away in Virginia. I had some things broken from shelves that got shook down but nothing serious. The last two I had fun with. I haven't been to California yet. Hope to go someday. I hope all of our Peas and Pea families made it through this one safe and sound with as little damage as possible.

We are 2 hours south west from the epicenter. We were at the movies when it hit. It rolled and swayed a lot and did indeed last a long time.
Haven't felt any of the aftershocks

We are two hours away. I didn't feel the earthquake because I was driving when it happened. But my Quakefeed App did go off and I noticed other people talking about it in Target. Then I checked FB and was like I hope that the damage that has occurred isn't too bad. We have felt the aftershocks. I have lived in CA all my life and I remember Landers and others that were scary.

I find them very soothing. And I remember being very disappointed that we missed being in New Orleans for a hurricane, because I really wanted to experience one. The next time we drove on I10 in that direction there actually had been a hurricane, one side of the road was fine, but across the highway was just devastated. I decided I am an idiot.

It said 8 miles from Ridgecrest. That was 8 miles or so from the summer camp I worked in 1992, Camp Tecuya. I wonder how close it was to that.

I like radical weather too. The only thing I don't want to experience is a tornado. One chased us from New Mexico to Missouri and on up to Illinois once. I couldn't wait to get back to good old California earthquakes. Tornados are scary!

On the Phoenix reddit board a couple of people reported feeling it in the "west" and near Scottsdale. That's a wats away!

For those that felt the quake & aftershocks I am sorry. After the Alaska quake last fall I am still a wreck. We had a 4.7 yesterday when I was at my infusion and both the nurse and I were nervous.
Sometimes I think that the aftershocks are worse. They just don't stop happening!

Just checked USGS.... 140 earthquakes in that area since yesterday! Im sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am not in an area that gets big earthquakes. Is 140 quakes after the biggest one normal? I know you get aftershocks, but 140 seems like a lot more than I would expect.

The number has already slowed down. A lot of the aftershocks you cannot even feel. Hope everyone out there stays safe!

The Anchorage quake that FrozenPea experienced had 350 aftershocks registering 3 or greater in the month after the big quake. I'm not sure how many of those were in the first 24 hours, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was close to 50%.

Have not felt a single Aftershock which is not surprising. I have many friends who did not even feel the main earthquake due to their activity (like walking or driving) during the time of the quake. No one is feeling ALL or, probably even most, of those 140 aftershocks that have recorded.

Usually there are quite a few aftershocks in the days/weeks after. They’re pretty small and most don’t feel anything below 2.5 or so. 140 just seems like a lot to me. I don’t know what’s “normal”.

Here's an article from a local Anchorage station about aftershocks from our Nov 30 quake. "Of those nearly 5,000 aftershocks, only a small minority — around 120 since Dec. 4 — are magnitude 3.0 or greater, and only nine greater than magnitude 4.0 in the same time. I had to turn off the notifications on my earthquake app because we have had so many aftershocks. It's been crazy! We felt it big time up here in Central CA
