LOL My oldest and her girlfriend likely will only ever have fur babies. They currently have two cats, two reptiles and a horse. They are seriously going to need 50 acres and a tiny home to afford it all. Anyway, both cats are rescues. And the Himalayan was abandoned in the streets, so is missing quite a few teeth. She was in a pretty sad state when they got her. Because of the no teeth, she is on canned food only. And because she won't self regulate her food amount, they feed her numerous times a day so she doesn't make herself sick. And so unlike their second cat, this one can't be left for a weekend with a bowl of food and water. So we gladly take her to our place to help out. All well and good, right? NOPE This smarty pants cat has them trained to get up at 6am for her first feeding. The "instructions" she came with say 6, 10, 2 and 6 for timing. The last two mornings I have heard hear loudly calling at 6am. Thinking DH had forgotten or didn't hear her (I don't know how, she's LOUD) I got up to feed her. She'd been fed. DD has instructed us not to give in. We haven't. LOL She also has no real hunting instincts, but will bring her "toy" out to the hallway and very loudly meow until you come praise her for her catch. We have to make sure we hide all the toys at night or she will hunt them and wake us all night (so says DD ha ha). She's pretty cute though, so we'll cut her some slack. And because I know the rules:

So cute!!
My cats had my ex trained to get up in the middle of the night to feed them. For some reason, this still annoys me irrationally. Lol

So cute!! I love how they can adjust to a routine (train us). She's an adorable little sassy girl!
Our cat seems to understand that as soon as we start moving she can ask for breakfast. She is pretty good about that. While we feed her canned food 2x/day, we don't feed until she asks to be fed. She will sit by her dry food and water bowls and wait patiently. She's so cute!
I've had dogs and they are adorable and fun, but I so prefer a cat. My current is a rescue that I've had for 8 years and she's a princess. My DH left this morning and will be gone overnight. I think she knows something is up because she usually goes upstairs for her morning nap by now. DH sits in a chair by the sliders to the deck several times a day and she is laying out there right now. I think she is waiting for him.
These fur babies are so lovely!

Super cute. She has her sassafras face on. Watch out, because I do believe she's plotting.

It's your grandkitty's life and you're just living in it. Oh my goodness what a sweetheart. Yes, you are part of her “staff” now. Siamese/Himalayan cats (I think these breeds are related?) are some of my favorites. I love how vocal they are. My current Siamese mix “sings” every time she sees me.

I always feel better about my pet-parenting skills when I see how well other pets have their owners (or grandparents) trained My Dot (who I actually do not doubt would catch everything possible if allowed outside) brings me her catches too. Drops them near me and meows until I praise the heck out of her. Her favorites catches are two very thick and super soft microfiber cleaning towels. They're in the back of a box (so she has to work for them) in my laundry room. Almost every single morning thay are sitting near my bed, or just outside the bedroom door.

She is a beautiful kitty. What is her name? One of mine has had to have two teeth removed due to feline odontoclastic resorption lesions. I had never heard of it when the vet showed me a little red dot on one of her teeth. Apparently it is a genetic thing that some cats have and it is terribly painful for them. When she was having surgery to have the damaged tooth removed, they found a second one. I’m just glad the vet caught them and my poor kitty wasn’t in terrible pain. Fortunately her two sibling cats don’t have these.
Anyway, this kitty of mine also eats mostly wet food because it is easier for her. I find she does best when I feed her 5 small meals a day. She is spoiled rotten and knows she is “head animal” in the house. She sleeps on a pillow right next to mine and if one of the other cats or my dog try to sit there, she chases them away, hissing and growling. It is funny to me because my cats have never gotten into a fight of any sort - just a lot of verbal warnings from “queen” Willow when they go near something she has decided is hers, which is mainly me.

My cat has these as well. I've had cats all of my life and too had never heard of it. She was a feral rescue....I have no idea if that has any bearing on it. Anyhow, she's had two surgeries so far, 2 years apart. The first time 5 teeth were removed, then 2 years later she had 4 more that needed to go. She's only 6 years old...poor thing! I asked my vet above just removing all of them this last time, but she didn't think it was a good idea, yet. I hope with your Willow it's one surgery and done.

MichyM, interesting! My three were from a feral litter too. Oddly, this is more a problem for urban indoor cats. These are some of the known factors: —- *Inflammation around the teeth (gingivitis, periodontal disease, tartar) *Resorption of the supporting ligaments of the tooth (deterioration of the periodontal ligaments without signs of inflammation) *Diet (magnesium levels, acidifying effect) *Indoor lifestyle, especially urban, and an urban water supply *Genetic *Tooth stress from tooth malocclusion and abrasion *Chronic virus diseases (especially Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) The exact cause is still under investigation. —- My cats are 12 years old now, so I’m hoping that we are done with the reabsorbtion issues. So far, it has just been the two teeth in Willow and the other two cats have been okay. And I feel badly that I never picked up on her being in pain. The vet caught it at one of her regular exams when she was around 6 or so. She had been to the same vet since I rescued them and they must have all been fine before this because it was never mentioned in any previous checkup. How much time elapsed between the first reabsorbtion and your kitty getting additional problems?

It was just under 2 years apart. The first time she was under 4 years old. My vet told me that she was very suprised to see to the problem to that extent in a cat that young. :/ Are you sure Willow was in a lot of pain? With Dot she doesn't appear to be in any pain whatsoever - until after the surgery that is. The other kitten I adopted at the same time (feral but a different litter) also ended up with a chronic health problem, asthma. Until these two I'd only had one other cat with a chronic heath problem, pancreatitus - which after the first bout which almost killed her was well managed with diet. Anyhow, I'm now convinced that I'll get pet insurance next time I adopt. I've had a good number of inexpected vet bills of over $1000 the past few years, plus the asthma medication was over $200 month. These two (Pandora died 2 months ago) have relly impacted my budget with their ailments. That said, having animals in my life is totally worth it. Anyhow, sorry for going off on a tangent, hope your other cats stay healthy Lexica , and so sorry for the little hijack cakediva!
