The local radio station does Life Court where people call or write in with an issue and the public weighs in on it. Here is today's post.

My advice for Allie is to take her decorative towels back to the 1990s where they belong.

Are decorative towels an era thing or an area thing? I can see this being a southern thing.
The whole idea of towels you can’t use baffles me.

I'd be irritated they used any of my towels in that manner. We have rags and paper towels they could have used to get the grease off.

To answer her question.....no, no grown man will know (or care) about the difference between decorative and regular towels That said, all human beings should care about leaving grease on any towel not kept in the garage.

LOL. I remember those threads!
I never "got" decorative towels. But I'm rough around the edges and like my towels to be utilitarian, and easy to wash.

Yeah....I don’t get the whole “decorative” towel thing...but if someone did that to a good towel, I’d be passed. If it has grease, it’s probably ruined. I have old towels with holes for really gross stuff. Towels are EXPENSIVE.

So, I read this to my 22 year old son.
He thinks having decorative towels are a stupid idea. However, he feels that decorative towels, by their nature, should be pretty obvious and therefore not used. Plus, he thinks whoever used the towels to wipe grease off of their hands is a Neanderthal for not properly washing their hands.

I agree with freecharlie, they should have known not to use a nice looking towel to clean their greasy hands or whatever. If you left grease on the towel, you didn't wash your hands well enough, pig.
Funny story (although I still get pissed off when I think about it). Youngest granddaughter came to visit a couple years ago and used my white monogrammed towels (which you're allowed to use to dry your HANDS) to clean mud off her stiletto heels (which she was way too young to be wearing). The towel was dark brown. Lord I was pissed. I soaked that thing I don't know how many times in oxyclean and it still looks dingy but better than it was by far. She's a little clueless that way so I could totally see her doing it again.

I have a couple of hand towels with some embroidery that I'm perfectly fine with people using and for the record my husband does know the difference between decorative and useful towels.

PSA: if you ever come to stay with me, DO NOT USE THE GREEN TOWELS! Those are the towels that have been relegated to clean up my geriatric dog’s pee accidents!

I don’t have decorative towels but I definitely have rag/dirty job type towels that are specifically for grease/dirt/oil clean up. I’d be upset if my bath towels were used to clean up those kind of messes.

Even if they weren't decorative towels, they need to learn to wash their hands better so that they are drying clean hands and not hands still covered in grease.

I have a couple of "decorative" hand towels (they're regular towels with an embroidered ribbon on the edge that match the shower curtain we got when we got married). But we use them to try our hands off just like any regular towel.
Honestly though, if DH used our bath towels for a dirty job like that, I'd be annoyed too. I keep a stack of old bleached/holey "shop" towels under the sink for cleaning up any messy things that might stain. In my world, you use hand towels (decorative or otherwise) to dry your clean hands. You use a "shop" towel to clean motor oil or other equally messy things.

OMG, that was my most favorite thread ever. I got a big smile on my face the moment I saw your thread title. A BIG NO here on decorative towels. But any semi-civilized grown person (male or female) should know not to get greasy messes on any towel that isn’t a rag. Decorative towels have nothing to do with it. ETA I had never even heard of the concept of decorative towels before that thread. Occasionally I had seen, or received as a gift, towels with so much tchotchke junk on the front that they would be useless as an actual towel, and I thought they were just stupid. I had no clue they were actually a thing.

I'm not sure that they were ever a thing in the UK. We tend to just like them clean. Matching is a bonus.

There was a special stand in the bathroom for them and they were quite small and decorated or had cross-stitching on them or other design. On the bathroom counter, there were also two other towels, that matched, but you could tell were for wiping your hands after washing them. My mom made sure that all the other towels in the bathroom were very monogrammed so that no one would even think to use them; this was when she was hosting a luncheon or a dinner.

She was LIVID when we had guests and they used the towels after taking a shower. LOL. I remember being like "but they're *guest* towels".

There was a special stand in the bathroom for them and they were quite small and decorated or had cross-stitching on them or other design. but they still sell these stands, and these small decorated towels, in the stores!! I confess, I do have two decorative towels in our hall bath. I bought them when I redecorated the bathroom, along with one bath towel that has embroidery on. They're embroidered with a design that matches the shower curtain, and they're so tiny that you probably couldn't even dry your hands on them anyway. Yeah, they're basically useless, I know that-- but they do look nice! (at least I don't have any decorative- or shaped- SOAP, lol!)

Our daughters would get our towels really dirty too, especially after doing yardwork, so we would always put paper towels in the bathrooms when we were doing something really messy. We told them that if the paper towel is dirty, you need to wash your hands again! The Neanderthal description sounds right!

My husband and I know the difference too. We don't like the decorative towels, we just get hand towels that aren't too expensive. We like to replace them often and use the old towels for cleaning towels.

My EX was the one buying decorative towels. I’m of the ‘towels are towels to be used’ group. Yes I know the difference and don’t use decorative towels at others houses. But my towels are all free to use towels. I left all the fancy damn towels ones for him.
I do have a few towels that are embroidered but they are mostly holiday themed so only used periodically.
Grease should not be on your hands to get on the towels - anyone not a Neanderthal should know how to properly clean their hands before drying them decorative towel or not. WASH your hands until they are clean before you dry them!
My grown son usually knows the difference between regular towels, & decorative towels, that’s his father’s influence though. However, he was confused the first time he came to my apartment because I had 2 sets of towels in the bathroom ( because there’s 2 towel bars ) but just different patterns. All free to use towels. He cane out and asked me if any were fancy towels. Nope go use whichever one you want.

ETA I had never even heard of the concept of decorative towels before that thread. My grandma (born in 1906) had decorative towels. I remember them vaguely growing up. At some point, my mom got rid of them. It was probably 60's-80's she had them.
