Does anyone have a set up like this? Office space in their main living area? Pictures to share?
Or maybe blogs/Pinterest boards that feature some good ideas?
I'm looking for inspiration on how to balance clutter/items/tools/boxes and still maintain a livable main living space, without going to extremes of putting in custom built-ins/cabinets, etc.
Thanks!

I used to. I used a bookcase to "divide" off a corner of my living room for a computer desk, and then a divider I used as a "wall" for another corner for a scrapbook area. I liked it, made the living room seem more cozy and useable. My office area is in the kitchen now. No hiding my paper issues there. lol

DH's office space is in our dining room. It is an awful situation, but the only one available to us in our very small house. It is the hub of our house with doors on all four walls- french doors to the side of the house, wide opening to the living room, hallway door, and door to the kitchen. The room itself is only about 14x14. As it is, we have to scuttle around our tiny dining table to get anywhere in the house.
We are looking into having a built-in set up along one wall, possibly with fold down desks so that the clutter at least, can be hidden behind doors. We would use the same firm who made our kitchen cabinets and would have them made to coordinate. When we move or remodel, the build in would function as a buffet in the future.
I've found Houzz to be a great resource.

Mine is in one end of our family room, so it's no visible from the more public areas of the house. You're not getting pictures because they would only show you what not to do. I have a smallish desk, a file cabinet, a bookshelf, and some wall shelves. they all need to be massively decluttered and better organized. I did have one nice idea that looks pretty. I have one of those metal scroll wall hangings on the wall behind my desk. I use it as a magnet board. It looks pretty on the wall, and it's useful. right now it's holding up a paper with all the passwords and account stuff I need to be able to do my job.

We have TWO desks in our dining room, which, like gorgeouskid's, is the hub of our house. They are both wood-grain in appearance, so they look like furniture. My DH's desk is along the window wall, and he keeps his laptop open on it. My desk is on the short side wall next to the door to the kitchen, so I can hear a timer or quickly take a break while dinner is simmering. My desk has a hutch, and I have photos and decorative objects on the top. There are four small cabinets and two drawers for storage, plus several open shelves. We can't avoid clutter, but we try to straighten up the desks before company comes. Part of DH's desk can also be used as a sideboard for dessert plates, cups and saucers, etc, when we have guests for dinner. We live here ALL the time, and guests visit somewhat rarely, so we feel entitled to make the best use of the space to suit our own needs. Besides, now that we're both retired, it's kind of nice to sit near each other, often in companionable silence, while we read or work.

Maybe to the right of the stairs as you face them? I can't remember if you could put a desk up against the stairs. Isn't there a closet or bathroom against the back wall? A 4 drawer file cabinet would give storage yet take up the least amount of floor space.

Yes, we have a house that has a living room & family room (1980's house). So we turned one of the rooms into an office. The office is completely open to the front door and dining room. It's furnished with all IKEA, lots of drawers & doors so everything is out of sight when not in use. I still need to finish the space with a rug & other accents, but the big pieces are in place. Here is my pinterest office board. I combined a bunch of these ideas to come up with my space. Office Board

I have two desks, a filing cabinet, and a bunch of other office stuff in our kitchen (it would be where a kitchen table would sit if we had one). Definitely not pretty (so no pictures!), but works. One of the desks faces our family room so I can watch tv while I work--that is my personal desk, the work desk faces a wall so no tv

I work from home, and my office is in our main living area... About 5 feet from our front door! I've recently purchased a new desk and changed the location a little (I hated facing the wall while I worked!) but this is what it was a couple of months ago: ETA: The desk I was using was a project desk left over from my paper scrapbooking days, and was very large and counter height. Because of that, I couldn't use a standard office chair. The "legs" were bookcases, so all of the office-y stuff was there. I've replaced it with a smaller campaign desk from Target, although I'm still on the lookout for "the one," and I added a separate piece of furniture that has closed-door storage. Lots of room inside for what I need, but it doesn't look office-y. I can snap a photo tomorrow. ETA 2: This was for a blog series I participated in on my website a few months ago, lest you all think I just felt the urge to make a collage with my face in it.

I have my main workstation in our living room. If I didn't, I wouldn't be able to "see" my family a lot of days during busy seasons. I like it because this way, I am still involved and listening to things that are going on, not stuck by myself in a room. I do graphic design, and the hub bub of the kids doesn't distract me. to store the things I need right there, I have the upper part of a hoosier cabinet like this (but no glass- the doors are solid wood)on top of a desk my husband built and stained to match. my computer monitor fits in the roll-up cabinet portion, I keep labels and swatch decks in the upper center cabinet, cameras, memory cards and misc. USB cords plus a smaller selection of paper for making samples fits in the shelves inside the rightcabinet. in the left is the flour dispenser, so I can't store much except some cds and dvds for software and tax stuff, just thrown in there on top. we use the bottom portion of the hoosier cabinet as a shipping station, the enamel top is great for wrapping things on.

I have this armoire in my family room . It is suppose to hold a tv and all its components but as we have a wall mounted tv, it wasn't needed for that purpose. I didn't want to get rid off it though so I use it for my workspace. It works well - I put in some LED lights from Lee Valley Tools (really easy to install!!) and I picked up some photo boxes from Michaels (5 for $10!), added a desktop file holder, a magnetic bulletin board from IKEA, some round cork heat pads from the dollar store and I made a padded ribbon board to cover up the back where all the holes for the wires are cut out. The desktop part is the perfect height for a kitchen stool. I love it - I can shut the doors and hide the mess away in a second. (This isn't a picture of my armoire - I thought I had pics of it all decked out but I can't seem to find them. If interested, I can take some pics of mine later today and post them.)

Although I have a room at the front of my house which is a hallway/office I rarely use it as it is cold and I hate that people can see into it through the glass door panel and side windows. Instead in my dining room I have a corner unit from ikea, made of oak, which when opened up shows a pull put computer shelf and then there is plenty of storage in the top and bottom parts. I just pull one of my dining chairs to the unit when I want to do any work there, but it all closes up and hides the mess when I am finished. I tend to leave my laptop in there as I have also set up a charger inside. I have a daylight bulb set into the top of it as well which is pleasant to work under, and I sometimes craft at that desk as well. I like it also because I can see/listen to the TV from that position ETA I have just seen roundtwo's photo- my corner unit looks very similar when closed, but is obviously half the size and oak coloured.

We use our "formal" dining room as an office space. This is an old photo, the kids now use the side table as a homework spot and they have a computer there, and all the scrapbook supply stuff is gone since I just don't have time to do that anymore, but the set up is pretty much the same. We used pieces from IKEA so the cabinets are mounted, but not expensive or difficult to do, dh and I put them up in an afternoon.

Thank you all SO MUCH! This is fantastic! mochi, I started following your Pinterest board. Lots of good ideas there, thank you! georgiapea, you have a good memory! Thanks to everyone who shared photos. You are all making me think I definitely need to convert the hutches we have into more useable space for stuff like my Cameo, sewing machine, printer, etc. I also really need a good way to store packing boxes and envelopes. The packing boxes are flat but are quite large, and there are so many different sizes. I was thinking about getting one of those vintage style rolling laundry carts -- sometimes they have them at Homesense/Homegoods/TJ Maxx, etc.
