I'm a teacher and did not have to take one to get hired not do we have random tests.
I can, however, be fired for taking cough medicine that has alcohol in it (although I've never seen it happen, I make sure that I don't take cough syrup if I am going to work).

My current worksite (an elementary school) does not, I think they should. All of my prior work places did, one place I was chosen two or three months nearly in a row, silly but that's how 'random' works. Dh's workplace does.

Nope. I work in software development. If we drug tested, we'd have a hell of a time getting and retaining employees.
I'm not opposed to it at all for jobs where there's a safety or security need. Beyond that, IMO any time there is an accident or injury on the job, someone should be tested even if testing isn't a routine part of their job. But I don't agree with drug testing everyone just because or for all kinds of jobs.

We could be but I’ve never heard of it being done. I wish it would though.
Dh’s Job and my last job had random testing. Not sure iwhat “random “ means for them. Sometimes I think it means we know who we’re testing, but the date we pull them in is random.

I answered as my husband. He takes regular but random unannounced dates generally every three months. He works in oil industry.
As an accountant in my previous life I never had to take a drug test. But the engineering company I worked for had to abide by testing requirements of companieswhere our guys would be on site.

Yes, I had to pass a drug test to get my current teaching job. No future drug tests from them without cause.
I'm fairly certain I had to pass one to get my initial Texas teaching license, but they don't test subsequently in the districts in which I worked, unless there is cause. I once saw a teacher forced to comply with a drug test for ongoing irrational behavior. Turned out she was undiagnosed diabetic and was suffering low blood sugar. Anyway.
I don't have a problem with having to pass a drug test to work with kids. I'm a grownup and have my choice of jobs. If using pot or anything else was important to me, this would not be the job for me. (I personally see this as very different from a kid being denied access to extracurricular activities for a positive drug test whether the drug use affected his/her participation in the activity or not.)
DH has been subject to random drug tests at work but, as his work often takes him onto the production floor, this makes sense to me.

I had to take an entry drug test. And I can be tested with cause. I am an accountant. I do not use drugs. I choose to work under these conditions.
My DH also is subject to drug testing. He is a truck driver and I believe he should be subject to drug testing. His job can be dangerous. He doesn't even drink, though.

Yes. In fact I was just randomly picked the other day for a test.
I work in an industrial construction company though. We just can’t have our union construction workers under the influence, or major safety concerns are at high risk.
Even the non-construction workers are random picked, which is how I fall in.
Our random picks are chosen by some sort of program that truly makes it random. Of course, if there’s reason to suspect, we can also pull a certain person on the spot and test. It’s amazing the lengths some will go to to not get tested.

My employer currently drug tests before hiring but didn’t when I was hired. We work with federal contracts so even though marijuana is legal in our state we cannot use it (not that I want to). Ironically my dd works for the federal government and has never been tested.

Just curious how many of us have to take a drug test for employment. When I worked for WM I had to have a pre-employment test. Where I work currently can require drug testing to hire but doesn't test everyone unless they are hired as campus police and a few other jobs considered potentially a danger. They reserve the right to test individuals based on changes in behavior, patterns of poor performance or if alcohol or drugs are found on your person, in your office/desk or car (all are subject to search at any time) or groups of individuals based on employment classification or office. All that said, I have never been tested and am not aware of anyone that has. Alcohol is included in the no drugs policy. If you have a prescription for medical marijuana you can have small amount in your system but are not allowed to have it on campus or be taking it during work hours. We are supposed to turn in a copy of the prescription from a licensed provider before being caught. If you haven't notified HR before being caught you can be terminated.

Random drug and separate alcohol testing since the mid 80s. Retired now, no testing.........

Yes, our state gaming commission has pretty stringent rules for granting a gaming license including drug test, fingerprints and background check. We are also required to submit to a drug/alcohol test with cause. DH works for a defense contractor and has a clearance that also requires updated background check every five years and lie detector. I don’t know if they drug test randomly or with cause.

Yes. To get hired you need to pass a drug test. Office workers can be subject to random test, but it is rare. Field workers get tested more randomly.

I don’t believe they drug test. I’ve been there 6 years and I honestly don’t remember that as part of the hiring process. Previous employers have done pre-employment testing and could test you again with cause.

I said other. I work for a university library. They don't for my department/position but I think they might for hospital employees and maybe others.
ETA-I looked it up and they do for hospital employees prior to employment and then regularly for people with CDL drivers, security etc.

I checked no on the poll because currently it isn’t a thing (self employed), but I have had to take and pass a drug test as a condition of employment prior to getting hired for a job. This was for a middle management position, but everyone who wanted to work for that company had to do it. There are a lot of positions where someone who has an addiction problem probably shouldn’t be doing those jobs especially if there would be a temptation to steal money or drugs.

I know we drug tested at time of hire for a while, but I dont know that we still do. They would definitely have to exclude marijuana from that if they did.

I've worked for two very large healthcare providers at the corporate level in the last 10 years and both required a drug test and background check prior to the offer of employment was finalized.

I have only ever had one job that required an entry drug test but I have had to do fingerprint and background checks for a few. I work for a small business now and I don't think he could afford to test his employees. Or probably care if we did drugs on the weekend.
My DH works for a company that has a random drug test policy but he says he's never heard of anyone being tested. They work with energetic materials and someone could easily kill themselves and others if a mistake is made.

Yes, pre employment and then randomly. It’s ridiculous, I’m an accountant. For field folks it’s a safety issue and is more understandable, but not for office people.
It penalizes lower level and lower income folks. The pot someone smoked on vacation, or last weekend, will flag on the drug test long after the fact and when they are absolutely not impaired. But the coke that the VP snorted in the bathroom at lunch will be out of his system by the end of they day.

I am retired as a project engineer for a heavy industrial contractor. We all drug test prior to employment, the first time we visit a new project site, and if we are involved in any kind of accident, including with rental cars. We can also be randomly drug tested.
Petrochemical facilities are dangerous, so I have no objections at all. I don't need someone using to be operating heavy equipment around me.

I worked for a 4 service utilities and there was a pre-employment screening. Then for the transportation and gas workers, by law they had to be in a pool of random drug testings. Office workers were exempt from the random testings.

I did not have to pass a drug test to be hired by my district. I honestly don’t know if new employees do. I do know that the district's bus drivers are automatically tested if they are involved in any kind of an accident with the bus.

My DS had to take a pre employment drug test just to work at PetSmart and have a back ground check to play Santa and the Easter Bunny for pictures. Starting January 1st marijuana can no longer be used against you for employment(NV).
