I don't do it much, but I find that I am going to be stamping and embossing about 100 place cards for my son's wedding and rehearsal dinner. I know I need to get the embossing powder on the stamped image while the ink is wet. but once I have the powder on, can I wait until I have several ready to heat and then do it? or do I need to do it right away once I put the powder on?
It wouldn't be a long time, probably get 5-10 stamped/powdered, and then heat them.
Is that going to be a problem???

That should be fine. You can also stamp a few and then put the embossing powder on. I use VersaMark embossing powder and it stays wet for several minutes.
If you do leave it for too long (either with or without the embossing powder on), the embossing ink will dry up and won't hold the powder in place when you heat it.

I stamped the entire background of this layout in clear embossing ink, then poured gold embossing powder over and heated.

Just make sure you're using a good pigment ink. It'll stay wet long enough for you to make several cards with no problems.

Bit of a sidetrack, can embossing ink (VersaMark), or embossing powder itself go bad? I was just trying some embossing and I could not get the powder to stick... I thought maybe my VersaMark pad was a bit dry, but two other inks (one brand new), didn't work either so now I'm not sure if it's the ink or powder...

I've never heard of either going bad. All my supplies are really old and still work well. Is the stamp that you are using very detailed? Maybe there isn't enough ink to cling to? That's my best guess.

I've used embossing powder that is probably 8 years old with no problem.

I'll pick up a new VersaMark and try again, thanks The stamps weren't detailed - the original one I tried was, but when it didn't work I did tests with just a plain arrow... Might take the Martha Stewart embossing ink I just bought back - if it's not working already, maybe it sat too long in the store...

I usually use versamark, and have stamped and put powder on 20 or so at a time before heating and haven't had a problem.

Not sure if you already know this but Versamark has refills available for the pad. I didn't know this until I was at a local stamp store. Always thought I had to buy a new pad once it seemed like it was getting dry.

Thanks everyone - I have versamark, and hopefully after a church meeting tomorrow, I can get a lot of them done! I will try to post pics once I get some done.

Seems that everyone else gave you good advice. Good luck! I made all of my wedding invitations and embossed sections of them. Since it was a glossy card stock I also used StazOn inks for the other images. I wore out a Cutterped!

I have had my versamark ink pad for probably 10 years now, and it still works great! I live in Las Vegas, so if it won't dry out here...

I once had a Tim Holtz embossing ink and I bought it brand new here in the Philippines. When I opened it, the foam looked okay but when I inked a stamp, the foam went flat and my stamp got these little beads that looked like Zing embossing powder. I thought it was just embossing powder but it was bits of the foam. I don't know how long the ink pad has been sitting in the shelf before I picked it up though. Totally wasn't able to use it. Now I have a versamark that I truly love.
