my grandma was recently moved to a nursing home, as her health is declining. She's attempted to teach me to sew in the past. I have the very minimal basics. I can thread the machine, sew a basic straight line I'd love to teach myself more since she's requested that I take her sewing machine and all her goodies and keep practicing. I'd love to know if there are any good youtube channels or online classes the peas recommend to teach the basics and then build off of that. I'm determined to master it since she's taught me to crochet and I'm the only crafty grandchild she has.

To get the most out of your machine see if there is a YouTube video for the make of the sewing machine you have especially if you don't have the manual.
There might be a manual that you could download on the manufacturer website.
I don't know lots of sewing sites so will be watching suggestions with interest.

If you are near a Joann’s, they might have beginner classes. Best of luck to you!

Go to your local sewing machine shop. They have great teachers. this is a great idea. I'll have to look to see if we have a local place. Hopefully they have some weekend stuff. During the week will be hard for me.

what are you interested in sewing? sewing clothes? quilting purses / bags?
join a FB group and look for free patterns to get you started. Google youtube videos for specific things you are interested in sewing.

I have a perfect sewing table to give you. You are a bit far but you could have it. It was built to fit in the sewing room of my new house and would be perfect for your needs. I would love to gift it to someone but don’t know anyone who would want it. 😢

Here is a link to videos by a marvelous sticher called Debbie Shaw. I have 3 of her books even though I am mostly a hand sewer. I believe she used to demo sewing on a TV channel in the past. Good luck with your new hobby. www.youtube.com/user/thimblelane

What are you hoping to learn? That would help us make some recommendations for you. I’ll agree that Crafty Gemini is great for basic tutorials, but I also think a hands on in person class is really best because then if you have questions you have someone right there who can help you out. Oftentimes local stores that sell sewing machines also hold various classes so that’s where I’d call first. There are also lots of specific sewing tutorials on blogs, for those I would do a Pinterest search.

You need to check out Gertie on YouTube. She also has a blog. She's a vintage seamstress who was picked up by Butterick to design fabric and patterns. She's fun to watch and very clear. I teach sewing to 150+ middle school students a year...I would be thrilled to help you!
