I haven't made a layout in a while and I have been feeling kind of guilty about that and really I have been wanting to do some fall scrapping. But I haven't. My desk is a mess. Last night I watched a bunch of Kristina Werner's card videos and I just felt an all consuming need to make a card! I get so excited at the thought of making a card and stamping and coloring the image, etc. I don't get that thrill about making pages anymore. *sigh* I miss that feeling.
So maybe I should just accept the fact that I'm more of a card maker now and just make cards and be happy.
Has anyone else felt like this? I'll never give up scrapbooking but cards are just such a quick project that brings me satisfaction.

Yes - I'm much the same way. I've given up on any kind of "daily" scrapbooking and tend to do mini vacation type albums. But I LOVE to make cards.

Yeah I get like this sometimes. My cards are never quick though...it takes me forever to do anything crafty because I'm always second guessing myself lol! Sometimes not working with pics is what I need so that's when I make cards.

I am in the process of completing a dozen books and projects. Cards will be my "one day" project.

I'm the same way. I have a stack of pictures that need to be scrapped, but it seems like a chore. Something on my "to do" list. I've scrapped for 18 years, and I don't intend to stop, but I don't have the same passion for it.
However, a making a card can be as easy or involved as I want. I can finish it in one sitting. It's not overwhelming. I'm not emotionally invested in a card like I am my pages. If I don't like the card - I don't hesitate to trash it!
Today, I used my Cameo and cut out a pretty leaf, some lovely pumpkins, and a British phone booth! I'll make them into cards tomorrow. Or not... LOL!

Yes. Cards are quick for me, but I seem to need to make them as the event (birthday, anniversary, hello, thanks) requires. I'm terrible at having a stash of cards. I have to think of the individual and how it will make them feel before I start a card. Weird, right? But my best cards are made right (like minutes) before we leave for a party or it needs mailing.
And, I really like Kristina W. I've been watching her for a long time.

OP, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being primarily a card maker!! Just keep doing whatever your interested in and go where your creativity takes you. Let go of the guilt and expectations!

This is so interesting...I've been scrapbooking for 14 years (or 38 years if you include scrapbooking the "old way") I still love it as much as I did way back then. My son (nearly 19) and daughter (nearly 16) still go through their albums and bring them out when they have friends over. I use to enjoy making cards but they were never really appreciated (maybe I was expecting too much)so I stopped. So, for all you card makers - do you make a card in minutes or do you take hours creating something special? And, do you make them for everyone or just those who would appreciate a home-made card? Just curious

I had been primarily making cards for the last year. I just wasn't feeling the albums and pages. Last weekend, we had some work done on the house, and we had to move the albums back. It took hours, because we all kept looking through all the albums. That was enough to get my scrap mojo back. It even prompted me to start a bit of daily journaling, as my memory isn't what it used to be.

Yes!!! I love making cards it seems so much easier to be creative!!! I have noticed that after awhile the scrap bug bites again Tracey and I get back making some pages....I love the not getting bored part of switching between the two. I have noticed that my scrap heap stays pretty messy though!!! LOL!

I feel the same way, and maybe it's because I watch so may videos and subscribe to so may blogs where that are strictly cards. I've been on a card making role. Finished up my Christmas cards and have made another 1/2 dozen miscellaneous cards for events that I didn't have a card for! I have 2 more cards to make and then I can work on a layout... finally! I think for me when I work on nothing but layouts, I feel the need to make cards, and now because I've done so many cards, I NEED to work on a layout or 2... but then I'll go back to making cards!

Absolutely! I haven't made a layout since April, I think. I am all about following what moves me or what currently makes me happy when it comes to this hobby. I have been on a card making run for a while now with no stop in sight. Yet, I know it will happen and I will switch back to layouts at some point as well. It runs in cycles for me and I have found it's best if I don't *fight* it, if you know what I mean. I enjoy what I am doing more, and the end product turns out to be a lot more creative. Don't stress!

Just curious I make cards mostly for those I know will appreciate them, and those cards might take hours to make.

Just curious Some cards I can do in minutes and some take hours. Depends on what I have pictured in my head. Sometimes what's up there is easy to translate and sometimes not. I make every card I give, I don't care if they 'appreciate it' or not. It's what I do and I do it to make me happy. As with anything I make (or buy) and give away, what happens to it after it is given is none of my business. I donate a lot of the cards I make, how would I ever be able to tell if they are appreciated or not. If I worried about that I would never donate. And probably give up the craft after awhile because I there would be no outlet for all I make.

I can't even remember the last time I scrapbooked. Probably at least 5 yrs ago. I get so much more enjoyment out of making cards. Not sure why scrapbooking doesn't fulfill me like card making does.

Just curious I make them when I want to be crafty, put them in a box and then pull my least favorite out when it's time to give one away! I honestly don't like giving away my favorites which makes me think I need therapy. LOL! I would say it takes me about 15-20 minutes to make one unless I go all fancy on myself. I truly only give the handmade ones to people who I know appreciate them! Mainly my sister and/or bestie.

I started out as a cardmaker but recently have been mostly scrapbooking. Not sure why but making cards have taken a backseat. I think there's a mental switch that has to happen when I make cards - think on a smaller scale re patterns, embellishments etc - and once I'm in the larger format mode I tend not to switch back.

I started with cards too and then slowly got into pages. But I still make more cards. I think I can just count my finished pages on my fingers and toes.

Interesting to hear all the responses! I've actually gone the other way in the last year or so - much more into scrapping (PL style) and card making has taken a back seat. I think I just got a bit bored and need a change

Yes, I've felt exactly the same way (but I never really thought much about it - thanks for bringing it up)! I think cards are more fun because they're smaller, you can send them to someone, and who doesn't love getting a card in the mail? I've also noticed that my scrapbooking has evolved more into not just card making, but journals (like smash books), DD and even crafts unrelated to scrapbooks that I can use my scrapping stash for. Sometimes I wish I could just CRAFT ALL DAY LONG and not think of anything else.

I am the complete opposite. I would much rather scrap a page than make a card. I see some lovely cards at some crops I go to, and I'm just not interested. I don't even like to receive them because I don't want to throw them away, but what do I do with them? One more thing to sit around.
I do still send out store bought Christmas cards, and love to receive them, but other than that I rarely send or receive cards.

I agree about the not wanting to throw them away but I'm okay with someone throwing them away if they just appreciate it for a day or two. I don't like to think of my sweet card being somewhere in the trash though. That kinda messes with me! LOL!

That's interesting. I finally gave up art journals and cards. I don't enjoy either enough to keep all the supplies on hand so now I'm focusing on scrapbooking almost exclusively. I do think I need to try other projects from time to time but given that I have precious little time for crafting, I'll devote most of it to scrapbooking.

I make homemade cards for sure, especially if I'm giving them to another scrapbooker. But I am definitely a scrapbooker before a card maker. Ultimately, both are artsy and bottom line is……do what you enjoy.

I have a hard time enjoying scrapbooking anymore. Maybe it's the recording of the memories (the entire reason I started/continue to scrapbook) but I just don't enjoy it as much as colouring. I'm sure that I've lost my touch for the actual cardmaking though. I seem to be doing the same layouts and winging it more than I used to. Doesn't matter. If it comes to a choice between cardmaking or scrapbooking, I'll pick a card every time. Even when there's memories I'm really excited to share. I dunno what it is, but cards are just so much easier.
I don't make cards for people, not really. I store my cards in Iris cases and I'll go through them every once in a while and send off batches of "no longer favourites" to message board people (I HATE the post office, so this is rare). The recipients are crafters so they appreciate what went into the card and they don't know or care about the flaws that I see in the card.
