I just changed jobs. Of course with that comes new health insurance.
Every place I have ever worked before, I just signed up and it was done. This new job made me provide my marriage certificate, tax returns and birth certificates of my kids in order to qualify them for coverage.
They tried blaming it on Obamacare/ACA - but no one else I know had to provide tax returns. Marriage certificates or bank statements were usually sufficient. It's nuts.

The tax returns may be related to new Obamacare regulations. The cost of premiums to the employee cannot exceed 9.5% of their total household income to prove that the healthcare they're providing is "affordable". It's currently up to employers how they want to try to calculate that. Most employers assume that what they are currently paying the employee is the total income, but some employers are taking into account part-time, past, or combined wages.

Wow, sounds intrusive. I guess the tax returns were to see how many dependants you have.

We had to provide marriage & birth certificates a couple of years ago to stay on our exiting insurance, pretty sure we've never provided tax returns.

Many employers had fraudulent people as dependents on their health plan...so many are now requiring you to proof the relationships through those types of documents. And I could see needing the tax return in case someone else is claiming on of your dependents (ex-spouse for example)

I just had to provide marriage cert and a current household bill or tax return with both our names on it for our EXISTING insurance. I've been on DH's plan for almost 14.5 years. When I told our HR director at work, she said it's common now to require proof of relationship. I guess there was/is a lot of fraud.

I've been with my employer for almost 18 years. About five years ago they did this thing where all employees had to provide proof that all dependents were really dependents and age eligible. I had to provide all our birth certificates, our marriage certificate and something else. I think a bill or something current showing that we lived at the same address...can't remember exactly. It was all to cut down on fraud.

We had to provide marriage and birth certificates to insurance long before obamacare. It is to reduce fraud and confirm eligibility.
We now have to provide proof of insurance for medical, dental and prescription on our minor children on the other spouses insurance to avoid automatically insuring them with the other spouse.
