I know there have been a bunch of threads on this. But I can't seem to make friends with the search feature, and there don't seem to be any "Gone Girl" threads on the first few pages. -------------- I finally saw the movie last night, I was really looking forward to it. Big theater and it was PACKED. I read the book and really liked it, but the move wasn't as good as it could have been. I'm talking about all the bat$hit crazy stunts she pulled on people who 'disappointed" her throughout her life, showing how insanely smart and vindictive she could be. This totally set the stage for her to do what she did with Nick. I thought the movie was basically well done and well cast. But I have one big gripe: they cut out key parts of the book - incidents from Amy's past - that really illuminated her character. These incidents made what comes next in the story more "believable" (if that's possible, you really just have to go with it, LOL) and better explain the current state of her relationship with Nick. The movie was quite long, and I think other scenes could easily have been cut to make room for this important information.

Yeah I think that they didn't quite capture the crazy. They made them both despicable but there was way more to her character that they didn't show. When I told those parts of the book to my husband, he was like... ohhhhh. In the end though, I'm not sure it really mattered but I was surprised that the ending was quite a bit different.

I don't know, for me it is hard to say what they could have done to illuminate her character in the movie that wouldn't have taken away from other character's movie development or the general plot. What scenes did you think could have been cut? It is also hard for me to imagine watching the movie without remembering what I read in the book and filling in the blanks. My husband didn't read the book, but seemed to understand what was happening and had a good grip on the character's background. I am very curious as to what you would have cut and what you would have added though!

I started a previous post about this movie, so thanks to all who advised me. It certainly is not a chick flick!
DH and I saw this yesterday. My experience was like Tearisci's. He liked the movie and what I knew that was left out did not really matter too much. The movie could have been three hours if had included more of her craziness and even the police work.
The theater we went to had 2 or 3 screens for Gone Girl. There was a pretty good crowd at our lunchtime screening.

People keep saying the ending is different. I read the book when it came out. I guess I should read it again because I can't figure out what was so different. Can someone please refresh my memory?

I have not seen the movie but I did read the book. I saw something on TV that talked about the movie. I believe it was with the news stations movie critic if I remember right. She was asked about the ending wondering if the ending had been changed because so many didn't like the ending of the book. The movie critic said that it was not changed from the book. I guess I am surprised to see others saying that it was changed. Since I probably won't see the movie I wish someone would spoil it for me here. I am curious how the movie ended. Maybe someone can use the cool spoiler feature where it is hidden unless someone clicks on it.

Here's a good article on the changes from book to movie. They were subtle but they were there.

Thanks for the link, Tearisci. Those are pretty subtle. What I remember from the book was hating both of them. In the movie, I really just hated her.

Yeah he definitely comes across more sympathetic in the movie than in the book, I thought. They were both awful but she was bat-shit crazy!

I didn't like the book at all and I thought we would see the movie and I would like it because of the good reviews. Disliked it just as much as the book.
I know it is fiction, but honestly, it was so incredibly farfetched (the diary, etc.) that I thought it was ridiculous.

I wish they would have included Desi's crazy mom.
