My mom just blew up her Vagabond and is devastated. She's had it for a good 3 years or so and, despite the death of it, it has certainly paid for itself. We can't afford $175 for a new one right now (even 40% off with JoAnn's sale right now, after taxes and shipping) and she's so afraid she's going to blow up another one that she would rather get a manual machine. I don't even know where to start to research a manual machine and both of us are a bit confused by the selection--my mom got into die cutting because the Vagabond did the work for her, so our family sort of skipped over the hand cranking part. What manual machine do you recommend? A Big Shot?

Big Shot! I've had my tough little Big Shot for over 7 years, maybe 8.

Another vote for a Big Shot. I had a Cuttlebug prior to the BS and would buy another BS if something happened to the one I have.

Big Kick is the same basic machine as the Big Shot. Get whichever one you can buy with a 50% off coupon. I have the Big Kick. It's sturdy and works well.

I had a Big Shot and then updated to the electrical Big Shot. I blew that out and now am back to the Big Shot manual. I also have a Grand Calibur.

I have both the vagabond and the big kick, I used the vagabond when my arthritis is acting up. I love them both equally. (well maybe the vagabond a little more LOL).

My mom has arthritis and I have carpal tunnel so while I can't afford to replace her vagabond right now, it's certainly on my list for her for Christmas!! You can't beat something doing the work for you.

Sorry to hear about the Vagabond. I bought one earlier this year because it was on clearance (got it for $80) so I use it all the time. I have a Big Shot that I was debating on selling, but I'm keeping it because I've heard about the Vagabond "blowing up". So my recommendation would be a Big Shot. It's a work horse! Sturdy as they come and I've NEVER had any problems with it.

Another vote here for the Big Shot/Big Kick. I have a computerized cutter (two of them actually) that I use for titles and custom things and a Cuttlebug that I bought mostly to use with embossing folders, but I decided to treat myself to a Big Kick when Michael's had their 50% off everything Sizzix sale last summer. It's a great machine and I've already used it quite a bit with the "other" stuff I want to cut like fabric, burlap, etc. that is hard or impossible to cut with the electronic machines. It's also nice for those times when I want to whip up a quick card and don't want to have to fire up the whole computer system for one little thing.
Titancia, you mentioned having carpal tunnel. I had that in both hands and when I was pregnant it became absolutely unbearable. I ended up having the surgery on both hands two weeks apart and I would totally recommend it to anyone who has carpal tunnel. The surgery itself is outpatient, and since they do it arthroscopically now recovery time is pretty quick. My doctor said that most people who have the surgery say they wish they would have done it sooner, and I would completely agree! It does take a bit of time to fully regain your strength, but that was so much more tolerable than dealing with the irritating tingling and pain.

I don't know why Sizzix has the Big Kick and Big Shot since they're essentially the same machine (different color) but I think your mom would be happy with either one. I love my Big Kick! Oh - and you can get them at Michaels when they have their 50% coupons available. I don't know if ACM carries them. Joanne's has coupons but does not accept them for die cutting machines and accessories.

I had no idea they were doing that arthroscopically now! I go back and forth about surgery (it depends on how bad I hurt that day) but I've been afraid to because a friend of a friend had it done and she ended up with scars up and down both her arms and it didn't work--I'm assuming something got botched, but hearing things like that still makes one nervous!!

The carpal tunnel surgery was really was no big deal at all. My scars are maybe 1/2" long on the palms of my hands and unless I told you they were there you'd never know by looking. I had the less bad left hand done first so that I wouldn't be able to chicken out on having the worse one done two weeks later if it was bad, LOL. I was able to go back to doing most things within a few days of having surgery, and I had a newborn at home to care for at the time.

Wow, I'm impressed!! That makes me a LOT less nervous about it. Thanks for making me feel better!! It's nice to know that won't be a worry when I finally have it done.
