I’m so sorry for your loss. By disabled, what exactly do you mean? It is my understanding that with the newer phones when too attempts are made to unlock the phone it becomes disabled. We received the phone in disabled mode. I don't know if it became disabled because of the impact of the crash or because emergency personal attempted to access it for information. We can not get past the disabled screen to do anything. It will allow us to answer any incoming phone calls. We know her Apple ID and password. We can connect the phone to iTunes and see that she does not have the pictures backed to iCloud. It was a fairly new phone and we can see in her iTunes account that she had not yet activated iCloud back-up. The phone can be wiped out so that it can be used by someone else, but when that is done, the pictures will also be cleared out and lost. We have been in contact with Apple and AT&T both. They are telling us because of privacy issues, they can not access it. We initially took it to our local computer guy, but he says it requires specialized software that is expensive and he is not familiar with it. We took it to another computer store that is an Apple dealer. It was over the weekend and the gal that waited on us wasn't much help. I plan to take it back and talk to someone about 3rd party data retrieval. I was hoping that perhaps someone here might have some experience with 3rd party data retrieval. Got it. That’s helpful info. Have you actually called Apple Support? Or just gone into the store? If you haven't called Apple, I would call them. Explain the situation and ask how to move forward. It’s highly unlikely that you will get a quick resolution, but you surely aren’t the first person to be in this situation. I would thing that Apple would be able to tell you the legal paperwork that you need. Alternately, you could call pretending to be her, like Nlwilkins suggested. I would worry that you needed further proof and then would mess it all up when you confessed you aren’t actually your DD calling. Apple has gone to court over the right to an account’s privacy. It’s a big deal. That’s food that you have her Apple ID info. That’s a big step.

If you have access to a computer she had previously synced the phone with, that’s your best bet for simple recovery. Plug it in and see if it will let you access the phone.

If you can open the phone, there are thumb drives for phones that you can download then to.
If you can’t open the phone I don’t think there is anyway.

Someone else just suggested this to us too. When my dd comes home next week, we are going to try this. We have her computer, but have to search for the cord in the boxes of belongings. Keeping our fingers crossed.

[br See if one of your local friends or family has the same computer and can let you borrow their charger. Worst comes to worst, you can always buy just a charger. But a few more days won’t cause issues with access to the content. It gives you something to focus on, which isn’t bad. but just don’t get yourselves into a panic over it. It’s ok to set it aside and focus on what’s in front of you, what needs to be taken care of immediately, and being together and trying to rest a bit too. Gentle hugs.

When my cousin passed away last year, Apple told his family they would need to provide his death certificate to get Apple to unlock his phone. I don't know if his family followed through on it, but I distinctly remember that information.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your daughter.

No, I decided I needed to put it aside for a while for my emotional health. I will definitely post when we get it figured out. So this week we are focusing on my sweet DGD turning 4! Thanks for asking.
