Does anyone have experience with retrieving pictures that have not been saved to the Cloud in a Apple XR phone that has been disabled? Apple and AT&T are of no help. Has anyone used a third party data service that would deal this situation?
The phone can be wiped clean so that it can be used, but we desperately want the pictures from it before that happens. The phone belongs to my 27 yr old DD who was killed along with her boyfriend in a car accident 4 weeks ago. They were returning from Yellowstone NP when the accident occurred, so we know that there will be lots of pictures. There are also pictures on the phone from the 4th of July weekend that my other DD and DGD spent with her.
As we move through the process of closing her accounts, emptying their apartment, etc. I have this feeling or sense of her life being deleted and I hate that. We just want this piece of her preserved if at all possible.

I have no clue. But I wanted to say I am sorry for your loss. I hope you are able to retrieve her photos.

I would go to an Apple store or to whoever her phone service was and see if they can “open” her phone. Are you sure they’re not in the cloud? Sometimes photos go there automatically if that’s how she had her phone set. I am so sorry for your loss. I bet there is someway that either Apple or whoever her phone service was can help you especially when you tell them what happened

I'm so sorry for you loss.
I'm wondering if a local computer guy could get you into it? We have a couple guys around here that work on computers and have been in town for a long time. My thought would be that a small, local business like that might have the expertise to do it and also care enough to help you out. Worth trying since you've tried other avenues.

I'm so sorry for your devastating loss. I can't imagine the pain you must be going through right now. Such a terrible tragedy.. I don't know if this is of any help to you. I've never tried it. There is an option on how to recover photos if you scroll down the page. I truly hope you find a way to recover such precious memories of your daughter.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. I can imagine how precious the photos are to you.
Can you get into the phone and look at the photos? It sounds like you have her iCloud password, which is the difficult part of the process.
If so, the easiest way to transfer them to your phone would be via Air Drop. You tap the square with the arrow in it and choose your phone in the Air Drop section. You don’t need data on the phone or WiFi to do this.
If you want to put the photos on her iCloud account, make sure the setting for her photos is on iCloud backup. Then manually run a backup. The phone would need to be set to WiFi to do this.
If you don’t know what any of that means, ask around and a friend should know what I mean. Or take it to Apple and omit any mention of it being someone else’s phone. Apple takes that privacy very seriously and may not help you without a lot of legal hoops to jump through. Just say it’s an old phone and you want to back up the photos.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
You might have to go through some legal channels before Apple can help you. A neighbor of mine had not heard from their son in several days, which was unusual. They lived several states apart. Unfortunately the son had been killed in a cycling accident, but had no identification on him. The local law enforcement was finally able to go through the right legal channels to let Apple open up his locked iPhone to identify him. They were not able to do so until the legal documents were secured though. It wasn't that Apple was unwilling, but they just required the legal documents to do it.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your daughter. My condolences to you and family.
My DH's iPhone completely died a few weeks ago and he took it to the Apple store. They were able to completely restore it and it took about 24 hours, but the photos, contacts and everything else eventually showed up on his phone again. Maybe if you take it to the Apple Store and ask for the manager, they will be able to help you. I certainly hope you get those priceless photos back.

I was thinking that if the phone itself is still intact, you might could use this to get the photos off the phone?

Not sure how the phone was disabled, but if the account is not closed, I would think whoever the executor of her estate could reactivate the account. I don't think Apple will help in anyway, unless maybe they have proof you are the executor.

Apple would be your best bet. Take a death certificate with you. That way if there are any questions you have the paperwork.

I’m so sorry for your loss. By disabled, what exactly do you mean? It is my understanding that with the newer phones when too attempts are made to unlock the phone it becomes disabled. We received the phone in disabled mode. I don't know if it became disabled because of the impact of the crash or because emergency personal attempted to access it for information. We can not get past the disabled screen to do anything. It will allow us to answer any incoming phone calls. We know her Apple ID and password. We can connect the phone to iTunes and see that she does not have the pictures backed to iCloud. It was a fairly new phone and we can see in her iTunes account that she had not yet activated iCloud back-up. The phone can be wiped out so that it can be used by someone else, but when that is done, the pictures will also be cleared out and lost. We have been in contact with Apple and AT&T both. They are telling us because of privacy issues, they can not access it. We initially took it to our local computer guy, but he says it requires specialized software that is expensive and he is not familiar with it. We took it to another computer store that is an Apple dealer. It was over the weekend and the gal that waited on us wasn't much help. I plan to take it back and talk to someone about 3rd party data retrieval. I was hoping that perhaps someone here might have some experience with 3rd party data retrieval.

I’m so sorry for your loss. By disabled, what exactly do you mean? I think it means that it's "locked". It usually disables itself when someone tries to enter a wrong password too many times.....well I think that is what it means.

It will allow us to answer any incoming phone calls. When you answer an incoming call...is there anyway you can see her photo icon on the home screen?? Just a thought. Someone has to be able to help you. Post on Apple and ATT's facebook page looking for help and why. I know there was a similar case in the news. Go directly to your closest Apple store..make an appointment with the genius bar online.

I'm so sorry for your loss!
The reality is you probably need to take her death certificate with you as proof that she has passed and you aren't some crazy women with her cell phone. I know that will be the only way to eventually close her account.

There is no rush to retrieve the pictures- they won’t go anywhere as long as the phone is disabled. With her death certificate you can try going to an ATT store and Apple Store. If that will not do it, you will probably need a lawyer, if recovering her phone photos is that important.
If it is a fairly new phone and she had been using iCloud backup on her last phone, then a backup of that older phone probably still exists on the cloud. If you end up not wanting to pay for a lawyer, you could always reset the current phone and restore it to the last backup on the Cloud. It would have all the pictures that your daughter took before this phone, so not all of her photos, but a significant portion of them,

Apple is very particular about disabled phones. I would not be very hopeful about them. But if you have her passwords you can go online to her Apple account and perhaps enable from there to upload the photos. Just now I went to my icloud accunt which I was able to get to using my apple account id and password. When I went to icloud there were no photos, but when I went to photos there they were. Try clicking around in the icloud accout and see what you can find out.
Othewise, I would call the apple help line and pretend you are her. Tell them your phone is disabled because a friend tried to get into it and now you need their help. Knowing her apple id and password will help quite a bit. But sometimes you have to wait a month or two. My phone was locked up like this and they made me wait two months to fix it. But, in your case it would be worth it.
