I am enjoying our new digs so much more than our old house! And there is so much that can, and I'm sure, will be tweaked as time goes on. I respect our Fairy Pod Mother ( I like this one) and appreciate all the time she has already put into this place. I'm not going to insult our hostess by going to look next door to see if they have better amenities to offer. We'll do our own improvements right here.

P.S. If you kneejerked (like I did) and signed up for the other site before understanding that this is a potential "site-grab", be aware that if you used the same login credentials there as you did here, that means they've got access to your account here too...unless you change your password tout suite! Good point!

I belong to a board that does the same, minus the special badges. People just volunteer and send their donations, and typically it's all paid up before most people even see a thread mentioning that it's time to pay the bill. You have to practically have a wait list to be able to contribute if you want to! On another board there is never any mention of the bill at all. At the very beginning, in a TOS pinned post there is mention of feeling free to contribute donations if you wish, and that must be working beautifully, because never once has the admin had to come and ask for any additional funds. I know I have contributed in the past.

I know I have contributed in the past. I would not at all be adverse to donating a bit here and there for operating costs of this place. I mean, I currently support two artists over at Patreon...this really wouldn't be much different. A trusted third part handles the transaction protecting both the sender and receiver. A buck here and there between 2,000+ users - yeah. That could work.

I'm perfectly happy here Besides, if we found that we had to leave, wouldn't it be nicer for there to be a discussion that everyone could take part in about where to go next instead of an uninvited take-over by a random stranger who claims to have a conveniently silent pea wife? That!

Eventually this board is going to outgrow what any free forum software can provide in the terms of storage space, bandwidth, etc. The board will need to be moved to other software that you have to run on a site you pay to host yourself. There is some free software you can use on a hosted site to start with. For awhile, a shared hosting plan on a server that could accommodate the site would run $25-$50 a month. Then you'll move up to a dedicated server that can cost hundreds of dollars a month, especially if you have the site host do daily backups (so you don't lose important data) and manage the server for you (software updates, etc.). This is what happened with my site, Crochetville. It originally started as a message board on a free platform much like this one. Within a year, it had to move to a shared server at about $25 a month. The person who owned the domain name was willing to pay that out of her personal money. Within a year of that, the site had to move to a dedicated server at $200 a month, and within 6 months, we were paying close to $500 a month for a managed dedicated server and to have our site host do complete daily backups for us. (The site was too big for us to be able to do backups to our personal computers. Then we also had the expense of the forum software. We use Invision Power software, like Adam is using on this new site he made. Because of the money involved, my friend and I turned Crochetville into an LLC company and put ads up on the site. Within the first year of the ads and being an LLC, the site made enough money to cover the site hosting and software bills. The admin of THIS site is eventually going to have to do something similar if this site grows anywhere near the size of Two Peas. In fact, if it gets that big, it's very likely going to cost at least a thousand a month for a server (or multiple servers) big enough to run the site, especially if everyone wants the ability to store images here. With it costing that much, the admin will need to install ads to cover those costs. It would also be a smart idea to create an LLC, to keep the money separate as business income, from her personal income. Personally, I'd much rather see the admin of THIS site potentially benefiting from turning the board into a business (out of pure necessity) than turning over the business now to someone and his wife who don't appear to have been an active part of the community. Granted, she could be a long-time lurker like me. I was a member of Two Peas since practically the beginning, but in 14 years of membership, I probably have less than 200 posts there. I read NSBR all the time, but I didn't have the energy to participate after running my own board as admin. So although I feel as if I know many of you pretty well, I fully understand you don't know me at all and therefore can't really consider me a part of the Two Peas community. I'm okay with many of the threads here being either groomed/deleted or ageing off: topics like what do you keep your thermostat set at or what is the weather like where you are and would you eat this really don't need to be saved forever and ever. Even product recommendation threads age after a year or so.

Signed up over there before knowing what was happening. But I'm staying put. And, I don't mind pitching in a few bucks on occasion to keep it running.

Y'know, it's funny. I didn't know how much I would miss NSBR until it wasn't there anymore. I've never been a super active poster but I do read multiple times a day.
I'm staying.
