This is so stupid. The paranoia of people astounds me sometimes. Anyone can get your address by just driving by your house.
Have it at your own house and advertise the crap out of it. Ppl have garage sales here in the country all the time. Anything left post on FB swap groups.

I’m confused about having to play games with “friends” to keep the peace. You signed up for a multi-family garage sale. Unless she lives on a street where people randomly drive through how do you get business?! You’re friends. You should be able to tell her that the “rules” have changed and you are going to go another route. If that jeopardizes your birthday trip, are you really friends?

Does she live in a neighborhood where there are regular garage sales?
A friend of mine does, and I've participated in 3 garage sales at her address. People seem to roam the streets of her neighborhood looking for sales to stop off at.
That's about the only excuse for her not to advertise.
That being said, my friend put up signs the day of the last sale and posted in FB garage sale groups the night before as well.
We held two sales two weeks apart, and she made about $1,000 and I made $300 - she was moving out of state, so she had a lot more stuff to sell! 😂
I would go with bringing a table's worth of stuff and that's it. Maybe engage in a word of mouth campaign? Like tell the other moms at school you are having a yard sale at "that garage sale friend's" house. That way there is nothing in writing about her address... 😉

Well in that case. I would back out. I would, too, unless you can make some big signs on sale day that are on a main road where people will see them. I thought maybe the issue was that she didn't want her name linked to the address? But the method of advertising above would eliminate that. I don't understand the problem. Garage sales are a lot of work and there is a lot of time invested (as well as taking time off from work, etc). I would want to make sure that it was going to be worth my time.

Wow, has she never Googled herself? Her address would most likely pop right up. And a lot of states have the Beacon website available. So your tax records, address, etc. are all out there.

The only reason I am somewhat cautious about the trip getting canceled is that everyone has already spent money on getting a house and on various tickets. While I am fine with tossing the money away (and at this point, would rather do so) I know two of them are really not able to just waste the money (which is ironically why we decided to do a garage sale, so both girls could make some money for the trip). Like DH said, I need to just suck it up and do the minimal amount and be done. No one else has tables or a clothing rack so I am expected to bring that stuff whether or not I bring anything else. Might as well get rid of some things since I have to go anyway.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what is so scary about advertising the address of the garage sale? You're going to have strangers showing up at your house regardless of if they know where to drive to or just stumble upon the sale. Her paranoia makes no sense to me.

I would be annoyed as well. One has to advertise to get buyers to attend the sale.
I would have a sale of my own, and advertise it as much as I want to.

I would have a garage sale at my own house. Why would you haul your big and bulky stuff to her place and then have to bring home anything that does not sell. I would advertise everywhere I can with pictures of the cool stuff and enjoy your garage sale. I think she is wasting your time and her own if she is refusing to advertise it. A lot of garage sale shoppers plan out their day looking at ads.

I hosted a very very large Garage Sale. I had stuff all over my driveway, yard, sidewalk and in the neighbors' yards. We had to set up days in advance. For that reason I didn't want to put my address in the ads and have people showing up early. I put the date and time and then something like "On sale day, from the intersection of Main and Elm, follow the pink signs." I had no lack of traffic at all. Would your friend agree to that? I just messaged her - she said no. Oy - then what is the freaking point? Good heavens, there is being safe/cautious and being completely nutty about it....

No advice but I'm so looking forward to the update! lol Well, last night I started listing the bigger items I had on FB marketplace. Within 30 min of doing that, she was texting me asking if I bailed on the group. I told her no, but I also wasn't willing to be stuck with things leftover that I *know* will sale if people knew about them being for sale. Her reply was 'Oh'. I guess she expected me to haul everything over there just so I can haul it back? 🤷♀️

I have rounded up lots of furniture, a fridge, vintage lockers - that sort of thing - that would absolutely sell. IF people knew to go look for them. I would probably go ahead as is and perhaps those things will still sell, since the area is busy. Then, if they don't you can have your own yard sale or donate - but give them a chance in this yard sale first. You never know.

This writes like an Episode of Seinfeld. "Jerry I have to sell this stuff. And he's got the best yard, the best yard!" "So what's the problem?" "He won't advertise Jerry! No ads in the paper. Nothing!" "Well how will they find you? "He's allowing two signs!" "Two signs?" "TWO SIGNS!" Did you write for Seinfeld? Because you NAILED it! I can even hear them in my head saying this.

No matter how many signs I’ve ever put up, the most successful garage sale we ever had was when we participated in the town wide garage sale with the town business association advertising it with a map if all participating locations.
We had non stop people BUT only during the advertised hours. Made a lot of money & the $10 donation was well worth it as I’m supposed to pay the town that fee anyway to legally have a garage sale.
I don’t see the point without advertisement if some kind, newspaper or craigslist at least.

Whats nuts is DH and I were looking at her FB page last night, she has a photo of her house posted there (no address). So if she was really *that* worried, she wouldn't post anything about it. She's just being high maintenance.
