and feel pretty darned satisfied about it!
Ebay has become more and more a buyer-focused site, with sellers having little recourse for a variety of customer behaviors. In fact while bidders/buyers rate the sellers, sellers no longer can rate buyers.
I do not have a business, but am currently selling off a bunch of craft items as I’m losing my craft room. Some buyer, in an attempt to figure out what the high bid was on 3 of my auctions, bid a reasonable amount just higher than the BIN had been (probably to see what the current bidder’s high bid was), and then cancelled all three of them citing “bid the incorrect amount” and never re-bid.
I had one person retract a bid for that reason a couple of days ago, but it was clear that she wanted to bid $11.25, not $112.50, for one item. I was totally fine with that, because it was clearly a mistake and she rebid.
But this woman cancelled 3 bids all in the $30 range, which is what these items retailed for (and worth more now because they are no longer produced) and never rebid.
I called Ebay on the phone and reported her ass. And got a satisfactory answer that she was clearly in violation of ebay policies and that they will take action against her. They also blocked her from bidding on my auctions for me.
Ebay collects a hefty fee on all sales - especially since they bought out PayPal. I’m glad that they actually gave me a measure of good customer service for those fees, especially since they feel free to ding me as a seller for a wide variety of things (including warnings because I didn’t ship some items because the BUYER ASKED ME NOT TO. She wanted to combine shipping with some items that were closing 5 days later. I said “fine!” not realizing that Ebay would come after me for not shipping the items “on time”, even though the buyer didn’t complain).

Some people suck.
I don't see the conniving until it's too late. But once is all it takes.
I had one guy buy an old local souvenir and he ended up being a summer house local guy. Wanted to meet me to pick up. I don't do that for small, inexpensive stuff because it isn't worth the time and effort. Not to mention he asked (actually more like told) me to meet him after auction's end.
I politely said no, I wouldn't be available to do that. (Saving like $3 in postage) He then went on to over-explain to me how to package so it doesn't get damaged in mail. See where this is going?
He rec'd it and was quick to message me that it was damaged in mail. I also messaged back, polite but dismayed as to how that could have happened as I hand delivered it to the post office of delivery (pobox) and watched the clerk hand deliver it into the pick up locker. (I had, even told clerk about asshat) but if he would please send photo of damage I would gladly refund $$$. ...

All you can do is respond with a comment to his negative feedback. His negative feedback affects your rating, however, and there is nothing you can do to remedy it. I’ve been an Ebay member for 19 years now, and it has been interesting to see the changes throughout the years - some, not so good.

Good for you! I hate most of the changes they have made over the years- especially making sellers offer free returns. Thankfully, I haven't had that happen.

Like liars talking too much, that guy (and a couple others) pre-played their devious hand a bit too much. When your spidey-senses go off over text/messaging it ain't a good thing. One other guy had the nerve to blame me after opening a package with more than one piece inside and dropping one on the floor and breaking it in his haste to open. "You should have packaged/shipped them separately". Um, no. It made it fine 1200 miles, safely in it's bubble wrap, you carelessly opened and dropped it and it's my fault. Um, ok... not. He actually gave me bad feedback wording just as above... I opened and dropped a piece. It shouldn't have been packaged together.

Good for you! I have never been a big ebay seller but now I really avoid it. It's just not a good place to sell.
I'll never forget the last time I sold something there. It was a dress. The winning bidder didn't pay and just about the time I was about to file a non paying bidder report she contacted me and asked if she could pay in a couple of days. I wasn't in a big rush so fine, no biggie. Those couple days came and went. She asked for another date. I said fine but that would be the last day I was willing to wait for. She paid, I shipped, everything should have been fine.
The day she received the package she sent me a scathing message about the dress being covered in "white animal hair" and that it was disgusting. I was baffled, as I have no white animals. If she'd said black I could have bought it because I have a dark cat. I apologized, but explained my confusion, but did offer her a refund. She then got super offended because that was HER dress and how dare I ask for it back! Well... umm... you just said it was disgusting! She continued sending me extremely rude messages for seemingly no reason other than she wanted to berate me some more. It was bizarre.
I left her neutral feedback with an explanation of what happened. I noticed at that time several other sellers doing the same and that she had pulled the same stunt with them. She had ebay remove all the feedback from her profile that wasn't positive and then left me a negative. Ebay refused to help me. I could not believe it.

I've been a member of eBay since spring 2000. I sold quite a bit of my custom ceramics the first couple of years. But I won't sell there anymore. Most transactions were great but had a few scam artists.
For years now, I occasionally buy from eBay but as I said, I won't sell there anymore.

Good for you! 😁
I avoid selling on eBay now. I did for some number of years, but the fees are starting to get crazy. And the number of scammers seems to have gone up. It's just not worth it to sell low profit items. I'd rather donate to my local thrift and be done with it.

DH and I both used to sell quite a bit on eBay. DH will still sell but maybe once a year. I only buy now. It really pissed us off when eBay shut down half.com. We had used it to sell books and games. When they shut it down, we took the box of books that were listed and dropped it off at a ladies group that holds used book sales a few times a year.

Selling on EBAY has become a huge pain in the neck. I'm glad to hear that EBAY sided w/you, because it's hard as a seller to have recourse for buyer issues. It's unfair that sellers can't rate buyers. It should be an equal rating system. Buyers can be very unethical, as well.

I sold a nearly new large Kate Spade handbag/purse on ebay a few months ago. The winning buyer got a killer deal, even with shipping. She paid promptly, I shipped promptly, end of story, right? Nope. A full MONTH after the auction ended, she initiated a return, saying the purse was defective -- she said the zippers didn't work, and that should have been noted in the description of the item. Complete and utter bullshit. The zippers worked perfectly well! People at my office saw me inspect the purse before I packed it for shipping and saw everything was in working order. I had "no returns accepted" in the auction listing. However, I learned that ebay says even though a seller may have that in a listing, if the buyer is not 100% satisfied, he or she can get their money back. I could have refused the return, but ebay said my seller rating/status could be negatively affected. So I accepted the return.

Each time I see this post I get pissed off again! So glad ebay took your side and punished her - I would've loved to have seen her face when she was notified!

I used to sell a ton of my old purses on EBay. Dooney , coach, Cole Haan, etc. With no problems or returns. Now I have no place to sell my purses because of these things that go on now on eBay.

I buy and sell handbags on Facebook groups. I’m on a few great mulberry and coach groups . Members are invite only and monitored and we only deal with PayPal goods and services . There’s rarely any trouble as we all know one another . Only the small Paypal fees as well. There are strict rules regarding large numbers of clear photos, and declarations regarding smoking status and pet ownership.

Good for you! I had a similar situation years ago. Someone was bidding on multiple auctions for the same item, and once she won an auction she cancelled all of the other bids stating that she'd bid in error. She actually won of my auctions and then asked me to cancel, again saying she'd bid in error, but a quick investigation showed that she'd won another auction for the same item for a lower amount shortly after my auction closed. I cancelled the auction because I didn't want to deal with her and I reported her to eBay. I'm not sure if eBay did anything about it but I did block her from bidding on any more of my listings.
I used to sell quite a bit, but quit after eBay started treating scammy buyers better than long-time sellers with tons of positive feedback.
