"I am a senior citizen", to get a 10% discount. I think that is the first time I have used it.

I'm going on a trip with my mom. When I was making the hotel reservation, I saw that there was a discount for senior citizens so I told my mom that we might need to put the reservation in her name. Then I looked at the details - senior citizen = 55 or older. At 55 that was the first time I was being referred to as a senior citizen so it was quite a shock!

I'm 48. I recently noticed that our grocery store sometimes offers 10% off on Senior Wednesdays for 55 and up. I guess that's the next birthday to get really excited about.

I turned 55 this year and I was so offended when I looked at a receipt from Michaels that said "senior discount". I immediately assumed that the clerk had "visually verified" my age! After my daughter used my phone number and also received the discount I realized that my Michael's card probably has my birthdate info attached and the discount is automatic. DUH

Wait til the clerks in stores start calling you, "young lady". Or they just assume you are a senior citizen by looking at you and give you the discount without asking.

I'm in my early 70's and have never asked for a senior discount. I forget about them!! I'd probably be a millionaire by now if I'd have remembered.

Dh and I frequently get over 55 retirement home information sent to us. That took a bit of getting used to 🙂 We have a couple of years to go!

DH would not use them for years - he says he didn't want to admit he was old. I asked him if he really thought he was fooling anyone by not asking for it and was it worth the 10-20% he could be saving. He finally saw the light once he did the math, lol. A couple years back, I was asked at a craft store if I was 50 because the senior discount of 15% applied at 50. I had just turned 50 a couple weeks earlier and happily said yes - my frugal nature beats my vanity everytime. Wendy's has a senior drink deal - buy a sandwich and the drink is free if you are 55+. If I am with dh they always apply it (he is quite a bit older than me) and it's about 50/50 when I am on my own. I usually forget to ask (I'm 55 so still new to get the deals) but I am fine when they assume. Again, frugal over vanity...

Nothing on Earth, especially a 10% discount will ever induce me to admit out loud that I'm a senior citizen *shudders in young person*

I am going to be 55 in two weeks. Give me a discount for everything! I’ve earned it! 🤣 Exactly how I feel at 58 One of my favorite plant nurseries offers a 10% discount to those 55+ one day a week. Other stores are age 60, 62, or 65. I’m happy to take it as it covers our ridiculous sales tax (10.1%).

Some of the discounts for seniors at golf courses are huge! Where the greens fee might be $50 or $60, DH plays one where the senior rate is $29!

Oh my gosh, DH couldn't WAIT to turn 55 for his senior discounts. I was mortified and always reminded him that I was MUCH younger than he was (uh, by six weeks). It took me a few years until I could bring myself to ask...

I haven't encountered one yet but I think I'm going to say something like "I think I qualify for your senior discount." It sounds a little better to me. I might even add "just barely" to the end of the sentence to make me feel better.

The first time a clerk offers me one voluntarily, I'm gonna open my bucket of whip ass! I was 40 when a clerk said I could get a senior discount. I am sorry well only a little) that I got a little testy with her. I probably would not have minded so much, but I just got my hair done and was looking mighty fine that day ... the kicker, she was older than me and looked every day of 100. ( personally, I think she said it just to be mean or felt she had to take me down a notch.

I just turned 56 and I'll gladly take whatever discount I can get. I don't look or feel 56, that's what matters to me.

If you find any good 55+ in our area please holler! Other than the nursery I mentioned earlier, it seems everywhere I frequent is 60+ or older. ETA: @the Birdhouse Lady I just realize that I had you confused with one of the local girls. I KNOW who you are, duh...I'm sorry!

Oh I don't think they are words to dread - they are beautiful words, because it means you lived long enough to say that. Plus, you got past the hardest stuff in life and now you get to get some discounts - it's a good thing

Also recently 55, not sure if I'm going to be able to ask for a discount for myself, though I have no problem asking for dh. I posted this on another thread recently. So funny you should mention this, yesterday at the Do It Center we were picking up some plants. At checkout the girl asked if we had any coupons or discounts. Dh asks what kind of discounts and she says You get a senior discount if you are 55 and older! The look on his face was priceless as he realized he was getting a senior discount. When I laughed out loud and asked her if she could make an announcement, I was shocked when she obliged with Hey shoppers, Do It Center offers a senior discount to those 55 and older. Just ask the guy at register 4. I absolutely howled as dh stood there with his mouth hanging open. Checkout girl was early 20s. Dh just came in hereto see what I was giggling about. He is giving me a side eye. Lol
