55? We don't get 'seniors' discounts here until you are 60.

I only shop at our local marijuana dispensary on Tuesdays. Tuesday is Wisdom Appreciation Day and 50+ get 20% off. We pay 18% sales tax on it, so I'll gladly take the discount. My license is in the computer and the discount automatically comes off, no need for discussion .

Last year, when i was 48, i was offered a senior discount at a Vegas show. She said, I know you aren’t old enough, but it’s a nice discount. Instead of $420 for 4 tickets, it was $280. I was thrilled.

I get half-price boat launch fees around here when I take my kayak out because the senior discount starts at 55.
I joined AARP when I turned 50 and we have probably saved $1K in hotel discounts over the past 6 years.
My father died when he was 37; I’m grateful to have lived long enough to enjoy senior discounts where I can get them.

I am 12 years away from being 55. I do not dye my hair anymore. At the rate I am graying, I will probably be offered it in 5 years. I already get the "over 40" button hit whenever I but alcohol now.

I've avoided AARP because they jumped the gun sending me shit when I was 40. I may have to reevaluate, thanks elaine.

I love discounts, coupons, etc...
I think you should look at it with a different perspective. The money you save over time with the senior discount, can go towards something you really want or need.

If you're trying to snare me, a tote bag is not effective bait. My husband loves to get discounts so I make sure to have him with me as needed, as I'm not quite old enough yet. Truthfully, I'm not quite sure how I'll feel about it when I get there.

One good thing is ordering off the senior menu, discount price, not overly amount of food, not all greasy but good variety, not having to order a kiddie meal but the regular meal is huge and then convincing the waiter that a kids meal is fine even though there is no kid presence, etc. And grocery store cards-all the store specials plus the senior 10 % discount! Wednesday shopping days at some of the crafts store gets you 10-15% off which is cool! Other than that, look for signs for discount and appreciate the compliments when they say you don't look your age.

The Silver Sneakers perk will save me over $600 a year in gym fees. I can’t wait to turn 65 for that reason alone. At 61 I proudly ask for a senior discount. It took a lot of sweat and tears to get to my age and still have a bit of spunk left over to enjoy the good years.

A few years ago our grocery store did senior discount on Wednesday. When I checked out, the cashier politely asked if I qualified. Whatever the age was (55?) I was shy a year or two. Not a big deal. I take the groceries to the car, and realized I forgot bread. Went back in, and ent to the express lane, and without asking, this cashier gave me the discount. I saved $.32!!!! Woo hoo!

I suggested my mom use one not long ago and she killed me. I'm actually a ghost tying this.

I’m 58 and my DH is 53. So I try to ignore any and all talk of senior citizen anything. Once he’s 55, I may ease up a little bit 😳

If someone offered you a 10%-15% off coupon for any reason other than age (that you qualified for) would you take it?
If not, and you are 55 or older, I hope you can make peace with the fact that vanity is costing you actual real hard cash money.
Me, I’d rather party on the savings and have a good time rather than worry about whether the cashier at *younamethestore* knows I am over 55.

I will gladly use it when I am old enough. I thought they were much older than 50 or 55 though. I am 52 and don't know of any that kick in this young .

Be careful of using the senior "discount" online for a hotel room. TWICE in the last month when I've went to reserve a room, I've first checked the drop down box for best available rate; then checked the senior rate. At both hotels the senior rate was at least $20 MORE!

Also recently 55, not sure if I'm going to be able to ask for a discount for myself, though I have no problem asking for dh. I posted this on another thread recently. So funny you should mention this, yesterday at the Do It Center we were picking up some plants. At checkout the girl asked if we had any coupons or discounts. Dh asks what kind of discounts and she says You get a senior discount if you are 55 and older! The look on his face was priceless as he realized he was getting a senior discount. When I laughed out loud and asked her if she could make an announcement, I was shocked when she obliged with Hey shoppers, Do It Center offers a senior discount to those 55 and older. Just ask the guy at register 4. I absolutely howled as dh stood there with his mouth hanging open. Checkout girl was early 20s. Dh just came in hereto see what I was giggling about. He is giving me a side eye. Lol That is an awesome story!!!!

At both hotels the senior rate was at least $20 MORE! Yes, always check and compare rates. For us, we have found that AARP rates have consistently been less than even the military rates (which we also can get, so I compare everything before I book). I have also found that hotel rates are often less if you book straight through the chain (Hilton, for example) rather than through hotels.com, but again, not always, so you always need to spend some time checking all options out and comparison shop.
