I received a text from my bank confirming a suspicious charge this morning. As it turns out the charge (and several others this morning) weren't mine. A bank rep and I sorted things out over the phone in about 3 minutes and I have a new card on its way. Really the only hardship for me (besides the fact that I use my CC for everything) will be changing my CC# for automatic payments). I really appreciate how the banks are so on top of things....and how much easier it's become to handle stolen card numbers. The last time happened to me was several (4 or maybe 5) years ago and IIRC it was due to a hack at Home Depot.
Anyhow, it got me wondering if there's anyone who never had had a credit card compromised?

I haven't but with one exception, I haven't had an open credit card in over 15 years.
[the exception is my Lowes card - I opened it, bought a washer on a same as cash deal, paid it off within a couple of months, and ignored the card. Lowes closed it for inactivity. I re-opened it to buy a new AC/Heat pump on a same as cash deal, paid if off a couple of months later. I suspect Lowes will at some point close it again for non-activity]
I do have a Visa branded debit card - I've never had a problem with it but DH has had issues multiple times (same credit union - different accounts). I have found that the credit union is really on top of watching the charges though - anything the least bit unusual for me ends up triggering a fraud alert phone for me to confirm the charges.

Only once for a very minor charge.. and the bank just took it off. It was obvious I didn't spend 3.00 in California (and I wasn't in Cali or even close).. Bank said they were probably testing it first before bigger amounts could be taken. Or something like that.

I’ve lost track of how many times it’s happened. I do know that the first time was in 2003 and PayPal caught it. I had to close everything and start over with new bank acct numbers and everything. Now I use a CC for all payments and just get a new one when that gets compromised. I don’t even blink an eye anymore.

I’ve had mine compromised 3 times in the last 10 to 12 years. All have been caught immediately with no cost to me. And because the credit card company wants you to be using their card they get A replacement card out to you very quickly lol

I haven't had my personal cards compromised, however several of my employees that had company cards had theirs compromised. One was traced to an employee of a company we did many purchases from. Oh, better knock on wood for saying that.

I never had a card compromised but I get the impression that cc fraud isn't as common here in New Zealand as it is in the US.

Yes, we've had a couple compromised and have been very happy with how quickly things are caught and resolved.
The funniest "compromise" was when we stopped for gas not far from the South Coast Plaza (big, high end mall in Orange County). DH's Amex was declined at the pump and, as he is telling me, his phone starts ringing. He didn't answer, distracted by getting another card out. My phone starts ringing. It is Amex asking whether we tried to use the card to buy gas. This gas station had a high fraud history as a first use spot for stolen cards and we'd never stopped there before.

My son, who has had a CC for about a year, just had his compromised. So he learned how to go about taking care of that. A good life lesson I guess, as it's probably going to be happening more and more.
We had ours used for tickets to WDW. Dh had to go back and forth with the bank about it not being our charge. Finally they provided a copy of the signature to "prove" he had made the charges. The thief signed his own name. Issue closed.

I am almost afraid to say that is has never happened to us. I feel like saying (typing) that out loud somehow tempts the financial security gods.

I have never had any CC of mine compromised. I've also never had a virus or malware on any of my many computers over the years and I've never had any protection installed except for a free Super Anti Spyware program. I have always been very careful but that certainly doesn't mean that it can't happen.
Eta. I don't have a debit card. That is just asking for trouble.

Nope, never happened to me. Knock on wood. Bank of America sends us a new card every couple years, saying a retail partner had been compromised. I appreciate them being proactive. They also once declined a transaction of mine, because we live in Minnesota, used the card in Montana one day, then Arizona the next. We often fly to visit our son in Montana, then from there to Arizona to visit my MIL. Now I call and tell them ahead of time.

I had the same kind of thing happen a few years ago. I ran 5 quick errands using my CC at each stop in an area of town I'm not in often. By the time I was paying at the 5th place, my card was declined at the same time I received a text asking if it was actually me making the purchase. The banks are on top of this stuff!

I'm pleasantly surprised by how many of you haven't experienced CC fraud...and also hope I'm not jinxing anyone by saying so!

I just got a new card from Bank of America. I had gotten a notice saying a business where I used my card had been compromised. They did not think my card was being used fraudulently, but sent me a new one as a precaution. This card is one I use almost exclusively at gas stations, and occasionally for other travel expenses.
I’ve had this happen before with other cards too. The banks are pretty good about catching things and I’ve gotten immediate notice about questionable charges more than once.

Woke up this morning to a message from Chase about a questionable charge on my Visa. No, we definitely did not order almost $300 worth of car parts online! My new card will be here on Tuesday. As annoying as it is to change all my automatic payments online, I'm happy that they catch things so quickly now. I've lost count of the times we've had cards compromised over the past 20+ years, but the reaction times from the banks is so much faster now than it used to be.

Between Dh and I we are averaging 1 CC or debit card compromised per year. Quite often it is someone in Europe using my number to make purchases - making it easier to clearly show it wasn’t me making the charges.
