Is it odd for a college not to know when convocations will be till January?
The university commencement is set. The different colleges will choose some time in a specific week, but my daughter's college isn't planning on what day it will be till January.
Our high school already has the date and has a tentative date for the next year. Our last high school had the date 3 years in advance.
It just seems really off that convocations won't be set till 4 months in advance.
Yes, I'm a little irritable. I'm trying to plan a trip. IF convocations will be on Monday or Tuesday it will be so much easier and probably cheaper. If not till Saturday, it will quite changes things. Having to wait is driving me nuts.

Not really. Many of the venues here do not open schedules more than 6 months out.

For convocations they won't know which faculty will be available, or how many graduates will be planning to attend until the spring. They may wait till after the senior class has enrolled to know which venue to assign their convocation to based on the number of graduation applications that were put in. Until they know which venue they can't determine dates because some venues are used for other activities that may already be booked.

What the heck is a convocation? Is it a different ceremony than commencement? Do you have to go to both?
My oldest graduated 4 years ago, there was nothing called a convocation. Youngest graduates next spring from a different university. Graduation ceremony is set, but there is no mention of a convocation.
A friend goes to another university and just attended a convocation at the beginning of the semester. Now, I'm curious about what these things are!

Youngest graduates next spring from a different university. Graduation ceremony is set, but there is no mention of a convocation. A friend goes to another university and just attended a convocation at the beginning of the semester. Now, I'm curious about what these things are! There are two different definitions of convocation. One is a welcoming ceremony. Our convocation is at the start to the fall semester to welcome the new students. Other universities hold a convocation either before or right after the graduation. It is a smaller ceremony with the faculty/admin of the specific college or major and the graduating students. It is not an all inclusive for all majors. When my daughter graduated with her master's they held a convocation for the students in her major so it was a very small ceremony with the faculty that taught her and her classmates. I think there were about 30 graduates. It was similar to the graduation but on a much smaller scale and with lower level administration instead of the university Presidential/vice president level admin. Family was invited and most attended since it happened right after the main graduation ceremony. There was some punch and cookies after. The college dean, department chairman presided over this ceremony. We got to meet her professors and people who had actually be involved in her education. Whether or not attendance is required depends on the institution.

I didn't think about it being based on number of students.
