All the ones I like seem to be suede. Living where it rains a lot during the winter I know they would get ugly fast. I have never tried waterproofing though. I also do not want much of a heel. Looking for something that is somewhere between casual and dressy if that makes sense. Any suggestions?

I tried these ones on yesterday and all were very comfortable. I don't think any of them would be waterproof but I use protector on all my footwear - snow and rain and slush for six months of the year where I live. Lifestride ankle bootsBare TrapsBooties

I just tried several pairs on at DSW the other day. I tried a few that were suede but like you didn't know if they would be dirty quickly (I was specifically looking for black booties and wanted them to be durable since I will probably wear them a lot). I ended up getting some Dr Scholl's that were leather.

As far as being afraid of buying suede don't be. I live in ND with snow and wet slushy Springs. That waterproofing protectant spray stuff works great. I have shoes from several years ago that still look great. I just reapply the spray each Fall.

Lifestride ankle bootsBare TrapsBootiesI buy Bare Traps booties every year or two, in both brown and black, and wear the heck out of them. They are all comfortable and the ones I buy are also low heeled (I’m 5’8” and don’t need any more height). They only last 1-2 years (worn late Fall through Spring), but they don’t cost much - for shoes - so, I’m fine with that.
